Memories of BUB 2011
« on: September 29, 2011, 02:31:16 PM »
OK - I see the BUB thread is a bit slow lately, so here is something to talk about.  What was your best memories of the BUB 2011 Motorcycle Speed Trials ?
I can tell you a few of mine because they were extra special to me this year.  First the idea that Warner was physically able to come out to the salt again and still be our crew chief, along with another surprise of Jim Leineweber coming out again for the first time in over a decade and helping out with his treasure trove of LSR  knowledge.   Just when I thought things just don't get any better - A white pick up truck stops by our pit and Denis Manning steps out, walks under our pop ups, has a seat and starts talking speed stuff with Warner, Jim, and myself .
Iam like - holy cow, I must have died and gone to heaven.
But the surprises were not finished yet for this year. The next day George Smith -S&S - walked by and when he saw the old Gray Ghost he stopped to chat for a bit and even gave a couple tips on squeezing a couple more horses out of the old Ironhead.
So this year at BUB was full of nice surprises, and last but not least was the idea that we up-ed the old Ghost best speed to date to 147.7
Not too bad for a 37 yr. old Ironhead with OEM Bendix carburetion.    8-)

OH Yes !  Lets not forget the fun and good music at Salt Fest 2011 - Thanks Drew and the Buell Bros. & Buell Sisters for a great idea for fun after the day of land speed racing, and all the talented musicians.   And lets not forget a special Thanks to all the BUB Volunteers for a job well done.

Here are a couple pictures for ya -  -  NOW - Whats YOUR favorite memory for BUB 2011  ?

This year was a thrash and I was working on the bike late at night just before we left.  It gets dark out in the garage with the moon and a camp lantern for lights.  After awhile I was tired and did not care a lot about the small details.  The bike was proudly wheeled down to the tech inspection with the shiny new tail piece gleaming in the sun.  The shrouding was removed for the tech inspection.  A bolt, pop rivet, or something fell out of the tail and landed on the salt.  The tech inspector's eyes got all big and he started to look at the bike real close.  He saw the drill swarf, sheet metal chips, and all of the other crud I forgot to clean out of the fairing.  I was told to get the bike out of there and if it came back, it had better be clean.  This was so embarrassing.  The bike was wheeled back to the pits and we cleaned and polished it up.  I found my missing socket wrench.  It was in there with a lot of other crap in a crevice in the fairing.  I learned a valuable lesson.  Always stay back at the truck and have a team member bring the bike down for the tech inspection.

Sounds like a little bit of a rough start to the week, but not all that bad Wobbly.  How did the rest of the week go for ya ?

09 was the year of gremlins and glitches for us, one after another.
As a post script  - I'd like to add that seeing all our old friends again, the FRCP crew, Buell Bros.&Sisters, Jason Omar, Bill and all the Sodium Distortion group, Team Tracey, Ballsout Racing Team, and the list goes on, and meeting some new friends is always a highlight to the trip.

Any how - How did the rest of the week go ?

We brought a new bike with a last minute exhaust on it that bit us in the butt. Only made 2 passes before it completely destroyed the piston and rear head.  Our racing was done by early Monday.

But we stayed and still had a great time!!

If you are former military and were given your salute by a wonderful little girl, no matter how bad your racing was you should have had a great time at Bubs this year!!!

Our week went good.  We set a new FIM record and held it for about 20 hours, helped Lars and met all sorts of old and new friends, found the other salt flats (we think), went hiking in the alpine country in the Ruby's, and generally goofed off.  It does not get better than that.

It was my first BUB show, we stayed all week. Also my second time on the salt, first time was two weeks earlier at Speedweek. Sure met some nice folks there willing to answer all my questions and more. NRHS Sales allowed my daughter Rizzy and I to visit and hang-out in their pits to see how all the prep time went on. Then follwing them through pre-stage and to the starting line, I got to hold the umbrella then too and drink some water he donated for the starting crew.

I can say it was my daughters honor to salute and coin him among others for their service to this country. She had a super time while I introduced her to what I call my favorite sport of LSR on the salt.

All the people, a long list, we met were most helpful to us nubees, which was the code to bring us back next year with some kind of two wheeled build. The fun has begun.

Note: I just moved to Oregon from Florida last month and my computer is still in three boxes. I had to go to the library to read the latest on this forum. Wouldn't you know, when I went to read the thread on BUB, then I realized that I had on my new long sleeved T-shirt from BUB. Guess that means I'm certified and have the fever.

I was fortunate to watch a young man (18) from Indiana take his first ride on the salt
during his first visit to Bonneville. From what I hear he may be hooked.
It's nice to see the future of Motorcycle Landspeed racing as well as the veteran/seasoned riders.

First time at bubs! I drove from new york with my brother and then picked up my uncle in colorado where we dyne tune the bikes at nrhs! We trailered out my dads buell firebolt and my 750cc turbo altered bike built by Randy Smith. Bike ran great and walked away with 2 class records. Me with a A-PBG at 127.795 and my brother with APS-PBG at 133.952 (He's 16!!!) Had a great time with my uncle who without him we wouldn't be racing!! He helped work on our bike and pull the head for inspection! Again couldn't have done it with out him! Great expierence and can't wait for next year!!

Could be the guy with the corn-cob cap.

I had a great time and enjoyed meeting many others. My crew also had a lot of fun and most if not all will return for next year. My 250 lb.++ brother-in-law (David Rodel aka Camp Rodeo) was seen running & jumping for the 1st time in many years after one of my record runs. He had been telling me for many months that I was too heavy for such a small bike. His wife (Mary Ruth) flew to SLC to meet us as we drove out. It was great to have an 'umbrella girl' with great computer skills too.

My team name, Advanced Landspeed, comes from friend Al Schuelder's cycle and scooter shop in Plymouth, Wisconsin. Al was along as the 2nd mechanic. In another life, he is a crew member for a Farrari race team. My chief mechanic and all around fabricator is Dave Murre, also known for hosting the AMA Hillclimb event near West Bend, Wisconsin each Father's Day. If your interested take a look at facebook for a lot of our pics and some short vids.........http://www.facebook.com/pages/Salt-Team-Advanced-Landspeed/222251137821263

Question...........when and how do I get to attend the Drew Sing-Along?

Also..........what should I be looking for from the AMA regarding the official 250cc M-PG record?..........I already received the invite to bring a bike to display at the November show in Las Vegas.......but they did not send any gas money.

Its very healthy for the BUB event to see so many new 1st timers that had a great time, a guy can tell they are hooked on the salt already.  Thanks to the camaraderie of fellow participants, and the helpful BUB Volunteers. The smile on Clayton's face tells it all, and seems like Uncle Joe just spread the salt fever to some additional family members also.  GOOD DEAL !

So now that everything has been cleaned for the 20th time of the salt residue - its time to start making a plan for next year.

Working hard to figure out where the MPH went. Messing with everything, a little at a time, all week. Some days chicken some days feathers! Lending parts for my buddies to get a record, great. BBQ's with our family and friends, Priceless! Gotta sharpen my pencil and go faster next year........yup I'm addicted. PLC
