footpegs in the Modified class
« on: September 26, 2011, 01:37:42 PM »
I was looking through the pictures on scooter's website of bikes at speed. I came across this one:

The bike was entered in M-VF. I thought one of the rules for Modified was footpegs 6" ahead of the rear axle.
What am I missing?

According to 2011 AMA Rules for Modified Class;

"5. E. FOOT PEGS
Foot pegs must be a minimum of 6-inches ahead of rear axle."

tough to tell from the photo but it looks like the shifter is well forward. The rider might have his feet resting on the axle nuts.

As an "also" topic -- SCTA rules state that feet must be on the pegs at all times.  I don't know what AMA says -- but all times would preclude the couple of seconds needed to move from starting/shifting position to rear/racing position. Unlikely to get caught - at least without photos like this one.  But I say again -- that's an SCTA rule.

Slim - that is what must have happened. As the rider shifted his foot slipped off the foot pegs and he had to find a place to rest it so he used the rear axle nut. As he had one foot positioned to the rear he was unbalanced and then positioned the brake side to the axle nut.

I guess the Rollie Free deal created the SCTA rule ...

when enlarging the picture, it looks like a set of foot pegs
very close to the rear axle.

and the rear fender is covering the top of the rear rim.

1300 bike did not set any  ama records. if it did, it would keep
the record(s) despite the infractions. that's how the ama is.

there's more than a few records set at bub ( including 2011)
with bikes incorrectly classed by engine also. I'm not talking about 35 and 40
year old records set before pushrod engines came in to play.

ama competition procedures--" all motorcycle shall be entered in the lowest
fundamental class in which they are legal."

that tells me that modern pushrod engines should be entered in push rod engine classes.
e.g.- /pf, /pbg, /pg  etc. ;  not  /ag  or  /bf   and so on.

if I am wrong-- corrections please.

No, you're not wrong Franey. While I give props to all the volunteers at Bub, class compliance during record inspections has been lacking for years. This year I witnessed an initial inspection that lasted less than a minute.  Mine took all of 20 minutes.

Two years ago when my engine was checked, they came up with 1325cc's. It was 1345cc's.

Last year and again this year I saw a bike with a seat  that did not meet the 5" rule. He set records last year and again this year.

even if there are dated pictures of that bike, showing that it is illegal,
his records will not be pulled.

#1300 looks like it should be in the A-VG class...............I saw several bikes get rejected for safety reasons............I was a 1st-time participant and tried to follow the rules by asking questions and looking at pictures of other bikes in my class......especially record holders.

If more volunteers (experts on rules) would offer a 1st-stage inspection on the 1st day, I think the existing crew could handle the 'tech' inspections and all bikes would move through scrutineering at a faster pace.

Any rules experts out there?

To my knowledge the AMA will not allow current racers to help with inspections.  If they did I would volunteer on the first day to do it.

Silly Rule............I could understand if all bikes were the same..........What if you inspected other classes than your own?

With bikes, almost every one is in a class other than your own.

Roger that Bill -

I will add that the BUB Volunteers are doing the best they can with what they've got.  It is getting better every year. This being only the eighth year (?), it is still very young as far as the L S R venues go.

Just a thought..............how about a pic or 2 or 3 to be added to the tech report sheets for rules compliance.  I passed tech on the 1st try so maybe I was lucky...or my rules were easier to understand than some other classes .............I moved my clip-ons but got the rules out and measured my thumb distance to be sure I was OK..........Maybe I am just a little too careful?

+1 and more for the Drew Team..............
