On the scene at World of Speed 2011
« on: August 19, 2011, 11:57:22 PM »
I know that World of Speed 2011 won't start for a few weeks -- but I might as well get the topic thread post list forum get started now.  Here's the most important thing I've got to say now -- and it's a request.

Ray the Rat mentioned elsewhere -- including at Land's End while talking to Nancy and me -- that he's going to be busy racing his car in the 130 Club at WoS, and that means he won't be able to devote his usual dang-near endless hours to shooting photos and posting them and his comments.  And since Nancy and I will have one, or two, or maybe three bikes to race -- our time to fill in for him will be pretty skimpy, too.  So -- who's interested in helping "cover" the event for landracing.com?  I'd sure like someone (or more than one) to step up and grab the "job".

I can promise you a couple of things that will make the "job" better than just a chance to exercise your camera's button.  I am pretty sure I can arrange for some photgrapher's credentials for you, and that'll mean you should have better access to places to shoot photos than you would as a regular spectator or even a racer.  I don't have a computer to lend to you so you can post your own photos -- but I will do what I can to arrange some sorta easy method for you to shoot 'em and me to post 'em.  There may be other ways I can sweeten your WoS experience, too.

The "job" will be pretty easy, requiring no more than 12-16 hours/day under grueling conditions in uncomfortable environments.  There may be some public humiliation offered, too.

How can you turn down such an offer?  Let me know if you'd like to help - or even if you'd like to learn how to try to help.  Send me either a PM or an email -- and don't post your response here.  No reason to give hoi polloi a head start, hey?

SSS: We will be racing too, but we can make our laptop and internet connection available to someone who wants to post the pics they take.

Wow  what a week---

6 new blue hats  I bet there haven't been that many in one week before.

The introduction of the new BLACK HAT, at the 2 club banquet, the awarding of "Bad Boys Hat" finally giving more recognition to the guys that have set records over 4---wow  that was special!
Miss LIBERTY,  changing T.K.I.  to noise, dust, rust, BLUE HATS & hopefully not scrap!!

Yep.  George looks pretty good in his.  :)  He didn't wanna take it off for some reason.  :)

Might have had something to do with the fact that he went thru enough parts to fund a small country's military to get the thing.  But he's not thru.  When I shot that photo he was telling his team that he won't be satisfied until he gets the Demon to 450.  The Shootout is gonna be a lotta fun.  :)

I'm also gonna need some help at BUB.  I'll be there, pretty much by myself and could really use some help from someone who could listen to announcer and do a running commentary of who's run and how fast, course status (like a wind hold) etc.  I can do the photos, but taking and editing 'em, then fighting with the cell modem to get 'em posted here is a full-time job.  So a "commentator" would be very welcome.

I don't see how B'ville can be any fun for Ray Therat. He works from morning to night, does the posts from his car and keeps on tickin'.

Some people make unrealistic requests and get peed off when he doesn't deliver. If the info that you want is so important to you,

come on out and do it yourself.  This event is getting so big that survival is a challenge.  in the past it was possible to sit in one

place and see every run. Then when extra courses were added that opportunity went away.  Now with 4 courses it is impossible to

keep up. With the length of the pits being what it is you need to drive at least 12 miles to see every pit site.

With Ray planning to be a competitor at WoS we can expect less from him that ever before.  Cut him some slack and accept what

he posts and if your favorite vehicle isn't covered, so be it.

Jon W is in the same boat. We are blessed to have this site but our expectations have become unrealistic.

I praise both of them for their marvelous contributions and extend another THANK YOU for Salt Talks.  It's the best opportunity to meet

the people that share this site. Besides, they have name badges and that is the back up for failing memory in us grey hairs.

Slim, Ray --- I will be at Bub's and I am not bringing a bike this year ... just couldn't get it together and keep the day job at the same time. I am wrenching on my nephews bike, my brother's bike and helping Dan/Lucille Dunn but once they are set I won't have much to do. I can assist with some coverage. I found out last year just how much work is involved. Ray, we will be in the area of the NRHS pits.

keep up.

That is certainly the case!

I gave up trying to "cover the whole thing" after the first year out there as a photographer. I try to get the cars that run on the long course (or as many of them as I can). A few sneak up on me when the radio folks do not announce a car is on the way until it already going 200+ mph and past the 2 mile marker (they have the same challenge to keep up as the photo guys do). It is simply impossible to pick up every car with out the help of a spotter over a 12 hour day. Some times you are just making a sandwich or trying to put a new memory card in the camera and without a minutes warning that they are pushing off the line they will get past you before you hear them when the wind is wrong.

I try to take a few pictures down at the starting line, and do a couple of cruises through the pits, then I stay at my stand near the 2.5 mile the entire day. That boils down to a 12 hour day in the sun every day I am there, plus a couple hours down loading images every night, and if I am lucky time to quickly browse through the 1500+ images I shoot every day.

Many of the cars I only see on the return road as they fuel or head down to the starting line. To get proper coverage would require at least 8 photographers who coordinated to cover all the courses and that is not likely to happen since some of us are free lance doing our own specific projects and the paid photographers are probably trying to do a specific assignment.

My best guess is that I shot between 7000 and 8000 images this year from Thursday to Tuesday evening, and I am just beginning to do a quick once over to see what I got.

Larry I agree with you completely.  I've done the duty in the past but no more.

The days run into nights.

Heat, lack of humidity and attention span all contribute to "burn out" by Tuesday but you

still have 3 days to go.

Thanks for the kind words, Doc.  Funny thing.  When I stopped in Wendover to get gas on my way home, I talked with a guy who was also heading home...he was going to SoCal.  He asked me if I had had fun during SW.  I had to stop and think.  I ended up telling him that I'd been too busy to have fun, but that I'd race at WoS and would have fun doing that.

Yer right.  It's absolutely impossible to cover even a small portion of what goes on.  After some of the "issues" that were raised about rules regarding escorts and/or permission to get to the timing stand and along Burford Blvd, I chose not to do any speed shots at all.  I just didn't know which rule was in place at any given time.  So I shot from the starting line, in the pits and in impound.  I hope this gets clarified before WF.

Joe, we otta get together at BUB and see what we can cook up.  I won't be there for the first day...I have another commitment that won't allow me to get to the salt until that nite.  But I'll be there for the rest of the deal.

WoS is gonna be a real test.  I'll be racing along with several other members of the "Fox Paws Racing Team", trying to show some new guys the ropes and shooting photos all at the same time.  But one way or another we'll manage.

I gotta do a little bitchin here.  Requests to get full photo coverage of certain cars and have the photos posted here, especially when very little info is given on them, yet specific directions for the types of shots desired is a low blow.  I do the photography thing for a coupla reasons.  First, I've got an incurable case of Salt Fever as well as being a life-long gearhead.  I love the salt flats experience and I love to shoot photos of fast cars, kool rods and kustoms and great people.  But I also do it in an attempt to supplement a very limited fixed income.  This is why I take requests for shoots for contributions.  Some teams have been absolutely wonderful in helping me out in this regard.  This year was a "make it or break it" deal cuz, like so many of us, I spent too much money gettin a race car together...so the contributions were and are VERY much appreciated.  But I can't do "shoots to order" and post 'em here on landracing as a means for some to get free photos.  I had several requests for this.  I'm happy to provide the best coverage of things that I think landracing members and guests will enjoy, but I still need to eat and fill the 42 gallon tank in the Burb.  So if you'd like me to do a shoot for ya, that's fine.  But I'd like to have a bit of a contribution in return.

Enough of that.  Now I gotta get some sleep so I can replace the power brake booster in my Burb (there went some of my income) and fix the cooling system leak.  (Shouldn't be too hard...I know what the problem is.)  Then Monday I gotta rewire the trailer, cobble up some ramps and tow the race car to get an exhaust system put on it.  Headers that dump right under yer feet aren't a good thing.  But that motor sounds and feels strong beyond my expectations.  It's the strongest motor I've ever built and I really look forward to twisting its tail.  If the tranny will handle it, we're gonna have a real good time, even if it's only on the 130 course.

Oops...I forgot.  I'm gonna add a photo here:

We had one h*ll of a storm come thru this area earlier today.  I had the race car in the driveway (fortunately it still has roll-up windows) and the Burb in the garage.  The storm dumped a buncha hail on...well...everything.  And what struck me funny was the white stuff building up on the lawn and the car's windshield (which was hail), while the white stuff on the concrete driveway was salt that had been dumped by the Burb.  If I was an earthworm, I'd really wonder what the h*ll was goin on.  Well, I wondered that, anyway.

Ok.  End of rant/ramble.

I second that Ray, I shoot for the love of the event and the cars, and am happy to supply photos to those I happen to catch, but it does take time to cull through thousands of shots for a certain car, then pick out the best shots and prep them, and then have folks expect you to just email them a few copies with no consideration of the investment in time, equipment and effort involved.

Many folks are losing their perception that photo's have value since so many are posted on the web, and the current ethic is to simply copy photos off the web without any compensation to the photographer. I know several photographers who have simply stopped posting to the web even with water marks because they repeatedly find their intellectual property (ie copyrighted pictures) poached on other peoples web pages, and face book pages.

If people want quality photos of the events at Bonneville they need to appreciate the costs the active photographers incur doing that "labor of love". We invest several thousand dollars worth on camera gear, a few thousand miles of driving, very long days in the hot sun, followed by hours upon hours of photo editing --- the images the photographers post on the web are far from cheap. They are not some random shot as a target of opportunity taken on vacation, but an intentional effort to produce a quality product documenting what the racers accomplish on the salt.

We respect your efforts to put a car on the salt, please respect our efforts to document your experience!

Ray The Rat & Hotrod,

you are writing what I tried to explain my "customer" for years.......sometimes I got the feeling that some of them are not aware what you have to do to get so picture as we are shooting for the racers.

I use my equipment only for the salt....otherwise I would need only my small Canon S90 cigarette box....due to this that it is the person behind the camera who makes the picture and not the equipment.....

But to have a number...my current equipment is worth around 20 grands....invest since 2007 when I moved over from analog to digital....Ray & Larry....yours will be not cheaper....

To come from Germany to the Salt....due to increase of the expenses, especially for the fly.....around 10 grands.......for the whole season.....

and the experience....I'm happy that I got some great friends who says in a wonderful way thank you for the picture I get them.....unfortunately, some got not the feeling that they have to say thank you in some way.....some forgot this words......so I have to extend my black list....again.

As Ray and Larry wrote before....yes we love the salt, we love speed and we love to make picture......but as we and all the other photographer there out on the salt.....we work very hard for this......it is though to be there out for hours in the heat....concentrating on the announcement and than to get the racer right framed and at last to prepare the picture that you can say...."WWWOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW"......

and it would be great if there would be a thank you from the one we "framed"....and if we got you not to the sheer size of the meet....some patience...we will try to get you the next time.....

As long as we're on the subject of remuneration for their work -- it's not uncommon for the landracing.com Paypal button to get a contribution that's marked for one or another of the folks that take and post photos here.  That is, mostly -- Ray the Rat.  I urge you folks out there in internet land to show your appreciation for their work by sending some $$ to the PP, marking it with the name of the person you're "paying".  I'll send it along to them.  When I ask one of the fellows for help - as I do with Ray, I also use some of the "unmarked" contributions to augment the money they get.  I want to make sure that we continue to get as many and as good photographs as we can here on this site.

Send your contributions for the photographers to landracing.com via the Paypal buttons -- or directly to the photographers.  If you don't have contact information for them (it IS marked  by they're avatars) you're welcome to ask me for it.  Thanks to you -- and thanks to them.
