Screw bit for CargoMate Trailer screws?
« on: August 07, 2011, 06:24:10 PM »
I have a CargoMate enclosed trailer and virtually every screw that holds it together has an inset 8 pointed head. Not a Torx, not a hex, not a square drive, but it has 8 points. I simply can't find any bit that will work on the screws. I have been told many times to use a #2 square drive bit, but I can tell you for a fact that those DON'T work. They just spin inside the screw head and strip.
I have had some luck by grinding down the next larger size square drive bit and that works for a little while until it strips too.

WHERE can I get the right bit for those screws?

It sounds like it could be a star drive, some deck screws use it.
If your local hardware store doesn't have them you might try on-line.

Hope this helps, Don

isn't a torx drive the same as a star drive?

don,
not second guessing you, a number 3 square drive won't work.  and, they are not " tamper proof " screw heads.

craftsman used to sell female 8 point ( for square " farm bolts " ) sockets. they may sell the male counterparts by now.

I would try to get a tool from cargomate--

I know this is a very old thread but I have had the same problem for a while. The #2 square bit will round out most of the installed screws. Snap on has an 8 pointed bit # BTss2. Or the one I found at a carquest store was a Lisle screw extraction kit. The set is part # 62900. Or the single part is 62560 or 62570. I'm not sure about the single bit #. Hope this helps someone.
