Title: CAMERAS???????
Post by: FADED on April 17, 2011, 10:57:23 AM
I'm wanting to put a camera on my bike this year so I can show the world what it looks like to go a blazin 70 mph!! Does the camera need to be hard mounted or can I run a helmet cam with the suction mount?

GoPro has alot of mounting options, also HD. Nice unit for the price.

I'm actually looking at the GoPro, My question is will they let me run a "stick-on" helmet cam? I personnally would worry it might fall off 1/2 track? Or are they stuck on good?

Whatever you do, don't ask John Noonan about keeping things with you on the bike. :-D  (He's the one the supposedly lost his cellphone, from a pocket in his leathers, while going down the long course).

Gopro wont fall off at 70, they advertise much faster speeds.  I know a few people that desert race with those on their helmet, they can get over those speeds and it's not a smooth ride.

Hey Faded-
Check out this camera: http://replayxd.com/

It's perfect for what you're doing.  The owner of the company is John Spar, of the B&M Racing family.

Nick 3rd.

Slim

Never lost the phone, it popped out when the leathers opened up from a bad zipper..got the phone back and it worked great after a 239 mph tumble

GO Pro works great and is easy to mount and use.. :-D

old topic but I'll add my $.02 anyway.  The Go Pro HD has a great suction cup tank mount that stays on well on a faired bike.  I've tested the stick on mounts to 208MPH amd they hold, even out in the wind.  You can safety wire it if you feel the need but you'll do fine at 70mph.

I wouldn,t mount anything on a helmet that could fracture the helmet in a crash.

this comparison is a year old and things change pretty quickly in the electronics industry.

Typical helmet mounts are either straps or 2-sided tape with a plastic subplate, the mount is not strong enough to affect the helmet body.  Not easy (if even possible) to use one in an SCTA car.

A real problem with the GoPro is that the clevis on the camera cover housing is poorly made.  No root radii, and cheap plastic, and bores are skewed.  They will snap off over time, which has happened to many people so far.  Should run a tether if mounted outside.

Cameras that require HDD's won't work for auto racing.  I lost a lot footage using a cage mounted camera.  The HDD shuts down to protect itself.
