Just a friendly reminder that the NC State Highway Patrol is conducting a Speed Limit Crackdown this Fri-Sun. It is supposed to cover all of the interstates and major 4 lane highways. Watch your speed headed to Maxton.

Urban legend or true scoop -- I've found an absolutely good way to avoid speeding tickets -=- and that's to NOT drive faster than the speed limit. Who would've thunk of such a thing?

Have there been any double blind, randomized, prospective, and placebo-controlled studies of your hypothesis that you can prevent speeding tickets by not driving faster than the speed limit? I think I heard of one study that was started but had to be aborted due to all the random crashes of the double blind drivers. I also supect that red cars with a horse emblem on the aerodynamic hood would still get a ticket.

If you lived over here in Australia in the speed enforcement state of Victoria, it doesn't matter if you speed or not. You still get tickets
3500 speeding fines issued every day in my state.

And in this lovely state the onus of proof is on you to prove you were not speeding

I had an interesting run in with the radar gun a few yrs back,,,
After sharing a few too many christmas beers with a mate at his shop , I left feeling bullet proof, gunning the 'ol shovel up and over the rise in the road , hitting 6,000 rpm in 3rd I noticed a highway patrol car comming towards me, 1/4 mile away, I hit the brakes (brembo's up front) and washed off most of the excess speed before the patrol car went past, but a quick look in the rear view mirror saw his indicator on,,and I waited for the dreaded flashing lights.
Being VERY carefull not to breath on the officer , when he told be I was clocked doing 80 k's in a 50 zone (phew, is that all ? I'm sure I hit 80 mph !)
I muttered something about the erratic driver I was following, and my need to convert mph into kilometers per hour on my "slow old bike" and hadn't noticed my speed, to which he added "if you are unhapply with this ticket, you can contact the dept via letter , and explain why"
I did this, and to my dis-belief, recieved a letter of apology, and a "tear up the ticket" in the mail soon after.

One of the things that the bad side of me wants to do if I am ever pulled over for speeding and I was flagged by radar or lidar is to go into an explanation about how I was not actually going as fast as the radar gun says I was. (true, though not significant, Your actual speed is the speed indicated on the radar times cosine(theta), with theta being the angle between your direction of travel and the imaginary line between you and the cop.
The sane side of me will do the yes sir/no sir/thank you sir that it was raised to do.

I fight every speeding ticket. DON'T BE INTIMIDATED BY THE SYSTEM.
In the last 16 years, 4 tickets, and I've only lost once. Two of them were out of state.
Odds are one in three that the cop won't show up - happened to me once. And nobody knows your case better than you do.
There's a great sense of satisfaction in beating the man at his own game.
Plead "Not Guilty", don't testify, and make objections. Make them prove it.
I'm shooting 75%, and I've saved enough in insurance premiums to cover the time I've taken off of work.
And the one I lost? I walked away with the satisfaction of knowing that I made a County Attorney, a Deputy Sheriff, and a Judge earn that $110.00. Probably cost the county a lot more than it did me.
You can't lose a loser. You only lose if you pay without a fight.

I'm not sure your success rate in NC would be that high. The "Good Ole Boy" network is in full swing. Judges will continue a case if the Officer doesn't show up. On your own, your chances are slim. Now pay $400 for a lawyer and you will end up with improper equipment. Continue, continue, my friend the judge. I just pay it and move on.
This weekends crackdown is a big one. State and locals working together. I'm taking the lead out of my right foot.

I'll have the CB Radio on, and the Radar Detector on it's most sensitive setting. But I always do that...except in Virginia, Radar Detector is Illegal. But the trucker keep pretty good tabs on anything "official".

I have to limit mt right foor pressure as well,,, In December I got popped in my wifes hot little Red Mercedes for going
"Kinda Fast".... good thing she is a Para Legal and Office Manager for a Law Firm in town,,, long story short.
I paid a fine and court cost for a "Improper Equipment" charge,, just under $300 and no points no insurance premium increase.... but you can't do that deal but once per year... so I have to watch my right foot (except on the track)
Drive safe and ticket free ,,, see you all this weekend.

In traffic court down here (other courts possible) when one's name is called and plea is given, say "open" and you will get face time with thw ADA and have a good chance of a reduction or out right dismisile. If you don't take the better $400 advice.

Once upon a time radar detectors were quite illegal in Michigan. I got stopped for having one in plain view on the dashboard - and beat the ticket. It seems there was a tiny loophole in the law - allowing peace officers, newsmen (with a permit for 'em) and ham radio operators -- to have "radio receivers capable of receiving police radio transmissions". It took some talking by my expert witness (me), but eventually the judge ruled that I was okay with it - and threw out the ticket. Boyoboy was that deputy sheriff grumpy -- 'specially when I drove away from the courthouse with a radar detector prominently displayed on the dashboard of the car -- where he saw it.

"To Serve and Protect" do you think the Police really buy into there own motto ?
Maybe I am getting old and grumpy,,, but everytime I see a cop car parked with radar on (speed trap) it pisses me off.. that seems like intrapment.... I am sure theyhave more serving and protecting to do for us,,,
Hmmm now I get it,,, to SERVE us tickets to PROTECT there payroll budgets,,, Oh now it is clear.

I have a set of buttons on steering wheel that allow me to select a speed and the car or truck automatically holds that selected speed. It's a way cool thing. And I use it regularly. Seems to be cheaper, too.
