Title: Newbie and the 130mph class
Post by: ponchobilly on February 24, 2011, 11:15:11 PM
Hello all.
I'm Bil from Merrick, NY. I caught the LSR bug from a trip out to Bonneville in 2002. I drove my beloved 57 Pontiac out onto the salt and have envisioned running it ever since. I heard of the event in Loring, ME from the HAMB. I believe trying to run the 130mph class is a good way to start.

That said... any (and all) advise for a novice to run Loring this summer?
I have the Utah Salt Flats Racing Assoc inspection checklist for the 130mph club. Would the checklist used in Loring be similar?
Thanx, Bil.

Is that '57 Pontiac a "Chieftan?"

Starchief 2dr hardtop w/continental kit. The drivetrain has been improved for reliability. It is stock appearing except for the Cragars ...(and interior).

Hello Bill,

Tim from the LTA here.
The 135 class requires a registered car, safe tires, a Snell 2005 or 2010 SA or M helmet, 3-point seat belt as a min., full lenght non-synthetic clothing.

WE would love to see you this summer at the Maine Event!  Luckily, you won't have to spend all winter prepping the car :-D.

I have lap belts installed already. A 3-point belt is posing a problem for me in the hardtop. Is a driveshaft loop required?

Not in the 135 mph class.  Just what is listed above.

Things are starting to come together, here. I scheduled the vacation time. The hotel I have reserved is "pet friendly". I have not found anywhere saying if the pit area would be too. Anybody know for sure?

There is plenty of room in the pits for pets. I believe I saw some last year.

This reminds me of the sign I've seen in various businesses (where kids accompany parents, but must be strictly supervised):

"Unattended children will be given a puppy."

I can only imagine how far off the tracks would this post careen, if I were a cat person
I appreciate all the input, though! I'm looking forward to July.

I made excellent progress on the mount for my shoulder harness (finally). The hardest part is to commit to making a cut. With that done, I'm real pleased with the way it turned out. All that's left are a thousand little things. I'm in good shape for July.

Hmm - flamingo-colored railing and uprights -- a nice alternative to the more common window safety net, but perhaps - you'll have a difficult time getting that approved in tech

I have the 2011 ruels & records book. I will be at the Caribou Inn. I plan on getting there for Friday. I have a few simple questions. Some things are still unclear to me, having never been there or done that before. Maybe I'm dim, I don't know...
1. When and where will rookie orientation be?
2. When and where would vehicle tech be conducted?
3. When does the racing begin and end.

Thanx,
Bil

Rookie Orientation will be Friday. Somewhere between 3-5.  We will let you know.

Inspection is near reg.  We will direct you where to go.

Racing starts Saturday at 9, or 10 depending on how many drivers meeting stragglers there are.....

Ponchobilly,

Just get to the track Friday by 2pm, pick out a pit and set up.. There will be folks there to point you in the right direction.  Once you are there it will be fun,,, The course workers/volunteers and other racers will make feel at home and help make sure you have the lay of the land...

See you there,

Charles

My original thought was to leave home real early on Friday to be in Caribou before sundown (600+ miles). Is there also rookie orientation & tech Saturday morning? Otherwise, I need to see if I can get the room for Thursday too and revamp my vacation plans from work.

As far as setting up a pit, I only need to open the trunk and take the jack and spare, and set up my folding chair. I'm going for time only. Truely a "run what you brung" kinda deal.

I had fun. I'm thinking about the September event. It ran 122.6mph through the traps and I reset high score on the GPS at 126 when I had to let off. It was still accelerating when I ran out of runway. Maybe a little more tape will do the trick!
