Here's a new one for us to follow. You folks may well remember Rob Gibby and Robin Dripps from their adventures at Maxton and Bonneville in both a roadster and the "old" 608 lakester. The car is owned by Bob Dauernheim, and Rob (whom Nancy and I know pretty well, along with Robin, his high school buddy) sent me this link to the photos of the build. Joe is the IT guy with the Rob Ida shop --= where the build is taking place -- and I've asked him to register and keep an eye on questions you folks might have about the build, the car, and everything else. Joe just sent an email (as I was typing) saying he'll be there -- so have at it.
Notice anything kinda familiar about the shape of the canopy?

Thats one sweet looking lakester so far. Just wondering what class they are going to run, powerplant looks like a SBC.

Hi guys my name is Joe I am the director of communications at ROB IDA CONCEPTS. I will be documenting the progression of the DAUERNHEIM-BIGLOW 608 LAKESTER being built by ROB IDA CONCEPTS (visit robidaconcepts.com ) The lakester will run in class "AA/GL" and if all goes to plan will set a class record with speeds in excess of 320mph. at this point in the build we will be sending it to the wind tunnel test to perfect or fix any flaws in our aerodynamics. I would be more than happy to participate in this forum with you guys as well as discuss any other projects we have going on like our 57 cadillac with a vette LS3 engine, or any of the completely custom cars we have completed.
-
its got the speed demon look to it :-D i was talking to gibby a few days ago at a car show here.. there goin after the rcord that seth hammond currently has which is at 311 and some change..
-
Hopefully with all due respect to the current record holder we would love to blister right past that
-
Besides the new design concepts Rob Ida has come up with we have brought in Bob Cuneo to consult on the aerodynamics. Bob Cuneo of BODYNBOBSLED.COM has built gold medal olympic winning bobsleds for the united states. We believe that with Rob Ida's talent and passion, along with improved aerodynamics/mechanics at the end of the day this car will come away with a bonneville world record.
-
nice looking effort cant wait to see it in person ---what is the wheel base
-
The Power Plant is a Big Block Chevy 540in.
-
What manufacturer is the Quick change? What is the ratio of the ring and pinion?
Thanks in advance.

Seth is a good enough sportsman that I think he'd let you run that record up to 320 and then the next day take it back at about 325. In other words I think his car has a lot more in it.
-
That thing is beautiful! I love the way that the front of it looks.
-
Racergo I would not bet that there is a whole lot more in AA/GL, maybe FL. We are running up against the aero wall with the frontal area size it takes to get over 500 cu in. Supposedly Seth has around 1050-1100 on gas I had around 930 one is going to have to get the total drag down as well as the frontal area--- I have not seen anyone doing all at the same time. I sure haven't, I have done some but not all.
-
Sparky, in AA gas class a 1400hp motor would be no worry. A pro stock motor at 500ci makes that. Something in the 600 to 650 ci with a big bore and shortish stroke. Blocks and heads with big bore centers are now available to make this possible and a buget of about 75k could get you one. Plug 1400 to 1500 hp into your LSR program and see what that gets you for speed. It makes me want to sell my house just thinking about it!!!
-
A beautiful car..... Well done guys!
-
Thank you very much to all for the compliments. I will be updating this thread as often as I can as well as updating pictures on our website WWW.ROBIDACONCEPTS.COM under the projects tab & our facebook account http://www.facebook.com/pages/Morganville-NJ/Rob-Ida-Concepts/112266852142140 I will also try to answer as many questions as I can without giving away too much. But I welcome all questions and I will do my best to answer them and keep you guys up to date on this very exciting project.

We won't see those numbers this year. If we do, then that half engine is better than their 8 banger. :-D
-
----I think the Tony Watters ENGINE just might might have something to do with that 386.

That and Freddy's big brass.....

put Freddys motor in the Ida car and see what it would do. 401 maybe? were's that old bobsled I had out back?

Mike,
After looking at the Ida car, I don't think you or I would fit in it, let alone a big Hemi V8. LOL. I guess that is why we have Roadsters. LOL.

I think the dragster style lakester has limited application but the tried and true belly tanker is going to have a revival when the one Chaz is doing hits the salt!!!!
-
This is a really nice build, be nice to see it on the salt for sure. Nice job guys.
-
Your trip to the wind tunnel should be very interesting! Please keep us up to date on that visit.
Rex
-
We will be hitting the tunnel very soon. As soon as I am able to give more details & more pictures I certainly well.
-
Beautiful car and I see some sort of suspension which will help with traction but it would never hook up with the engine out of the 44 lakester [unless they added a wing] :-P

To Tom G.,
It appears that it is the rear that I sold Bob, a Winters Extremeliner 3:08 R&P that was REM'ed. It has a 35 spline steel spool.
The body sure is lookin' good, you guys should see better speeds out of the car with it.

Joe,
Thanks, I was wondering if it was a Winters Extremeliner.

What is going on :? Inquiring minds need to know what the finished project looks like!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, that's it -- I'd forgot all about the lakester. I haven't heard from Ron Gibby recently, nor Robin Dripps -- and those are the two folks I know best on that build. Maybe Ron is lurking, will see this note, and will get on here and tell us the latest. Somewhere at the house I think I've still got his business card - maybe I'll shoot a howdy to him to get him back with information. Thanks for asking, Sparky.
-
when you call him dont ask for Ron.. ask for Rob. Rob Gibby. lol :-D
-
See how long it's been since we talked? I even forgot his name.
-
Sparky and SSS.
I've been helping Bob D. getting this effort finished for a test in Loring. July 16-17, 2011. If we don't break anything that can't be fixed, we will head out to the Salt for SW.
The car came back from paint July 1st and we all have been thrashing on final ass'y.
No camera's or cell phones at Bob's supper secret location :-D, because we are all old farts and aren't into the 21st century yet.
Hopefully there will be pictures once we unload in ME.
Can we go as fast as it looks?
We are geared for 275 mph at Loring.
I think we can do that.
This has been an unauthorized message, I hope I don't get in trouble with the boss.
BTW, I went with Bob to Maxton with Robin's E/STR in June and we did very good. Everyone was happy with the test runs.

PICTS!!!! It has run at a meet we would love to see it!!!

Like this. IDA Concepts
-
I saw it but no pics, batteries went dead in the camera
-
Somebody should have pictures. I brought a camera and the thing didn't work. but the car did.
1st run 240. this was supposed to be a shakedown under 220 run, make sure it shifts, steers, brakes chutes. ect. No issues with the car. Pack the chutes get back in line.
2nd run. no time. timing issues after a track sweep/cleanup. car pulled real strong everything OK. chutes out way early. RPM indicates about 250 when chutes came out.
Checked over the car again. Everything looks good. Drives good. Good test. Drink beer. Happy crew. Put it in the trailer.
We felt running on Sunday would not gain us any knowledge or information.
Frank
Edit, I found a picture, trying to post. Thnaks, Marcia from the HAMB.
-
You should have run it Sunday morning, could have been two 300 club members that day...
-
Thanks for posting---sure is good looking than

Post race update.
We ran the car 8 times and every one of them had a 300+ on the timeslips. The best, and last, being a 313.6 out the back. We were running against a 314 record, so we were always a few short on the qualifying. We were out of ideas that would be simple changes and tires, too.
No big problems or issues with the car.
For a bunch of guys who have been chasing the magic number of 300 for a few years, this years runs were a big accomplishment. The time slips looked like we had a bracket car.
Is the 608 the first unblown gas lakester to top 300 on carburetors? I think so. It means nothing, really, but it's a great drinking game in the pits.

You have a lot to be proud of. Congratulations.
Beautiful car and exceptional results.
Keep stretching the dream.

CCar looked awesome and fast! Congrats!

Congratulations to these guys!!! they had a Mile that added 50 MPH to what was the record they broke 5 years ago that took AA over the 270 minimum. They did a 317 on a 314 held by Hammon's #77, that put them in inpound. This 317 with a 322 exit---with the 313. best they had last year-- this performance puts ALL AA/GL teams on notice--- we are going to have to bring our AA game (pun intended) This team has elevated their game and given notice to all -- what to plan for > 320!!! Don here's to 2 of these-- back to back---SOON and what it brings to your head
