Title: Maxton June - BRING PLENTY of WATER
Post by: Cajun Kid on June 22, 2010, 06:37:36 PM
The Forecast for Fri, Sat and Sun is  94 96 and 97 degrees.. the "feels like temps" will be over 100 degrees each day.

Make sure to fill your coolers with lots of Ice and Plenty of Bottled Water and Gatorade etc...

Also you may want to see SSS or Nancy or the ECTA trailer and see if they have those cool bandanna's ??

Keep well hydrated this weekend...

See you all later..

The importance of staying hydrated can not be over stated.
As a Bicycle racer I can tell you first hand . With out water you brain WILL NOT FUNCTION PROPERLY. You will make mistakes . It may just be a blown engine or waisted run or MUCH worse . This is a primary safety concern. SO please drink at least one bottle of water for every hour you are sitting in the sun.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE don't be afraid to ask for water!!!!! It seems every time we finish a meet when it's hot there's a rookie that says yeah I was baking & didn't have water!

I've never said no & I don't think I ever have or will see someone say no you can't have a drink. The worst I'll say is let me bring you one back, do you need an umbrella or sunscreen too?

If you need a drink flag someone down! Ask them to swing through your pit & bring from your own cooler! There's people going up & down the access road all day, all ya gotta do is ask!

And on a related subject, as someone who manages to get heat exhaustion/stroke at least yearly, anybody have any good tips other then drink water & stay out of the sun? haha

The big problem is sodium and electrolytes . That is what the brain uses to conduct electric signals to the mussels telling them to move. You can get tablets at the drug store or at sports medicine shops like GNC.
There is also the issue of brain temperature. Pour water over you head and get you shirt wet .The evaporating water will cool you blood and that will cool your brain.WE are air/ water cooled machines.
You can take electrolyte tablets or there are a whole list of sports drink and supplements that will help out MUCH better than water . But water still tastes good when it gets warm and I would not recommend pouring Gatorade over your head.

Eric Gatorade poured on the head is reserved for our Victory Celebrations,,, during the heat of the day I say every hour drink a full bottle of water and at least substitute or supplement your water intake with some Gatorade or other sports type drink two or three times during the day.

Keep a wet cool towel or something to cool your head,...

another "BEST PRACTICE" for all of us is to WATCH OUT for each other if someone looks like they need a drink,, tell them to get some and/or offer them some water.

It's even tougher for the motorcycle folks. Standing around in leather for an hour or so before a pass...well, it's tough.  :-o

Especially for the fat guys like me.  :-D

Also,, start drinking plenty of fluids before you are thirsty and before you think you need any!!!

If you are drinking a lot of water and not peeing, then drink more, if your output is dark yellow or golden,, DRINK More.

I start alternating water, Gatorade, water, Gatorade etc... etc.... at 8am and don;t stop till I am back in the Truck headed for the hotel...

I would hate to see anyones weekend ruined by dehydration, heat stroke or worse,,, These HOT HUMID Carolina summers can get ya,,,

I know that if I am down on fluids, I am not safe. I am no fast guy, but at 180+ I see a big difference in my thought process and reaction time.

Any plans to have the shade in a lane or two this time??

We've got a box of the neck coolers packed already.  For those of you that don't know -- they're little bandanna-like thingies that soak for an hour or so in cold water and swell up to about the size of a couple of hot dogs.  Take 'em out of the cooler, wrap around your neck, and they'll cool your neck and the blood going up to your head.  We sell them as "landracing.com" items -- $5 each -- and suggest you get a pair of them.  One for your neck, the other back in the cooler to "recharge".  We'll have a bunch of them in our cooler.  Come visit us in our pit or find us at motorcycle inspection.

Oh -- don't forget to buy ice on your way to the track.  The ice machine at the motel will likely be empty by the time you get to it each morning.

I bought one. I've wrapped it around just about everything, with mixed results.  :-o

Trust me, I eat!  :-D

I took in 64oz of water last weekend in about an 8 hour period which is my normal full days worth, plus Gatorade, plus a lot of crushed ice, ate a couple sandwiches & chips, packed more eating & drinking into an 8 hour period then is normal for me for a whole day. Wore a hat, lots of sunscreen, under an umbrella.... and I still got heat exhaustion. {sigh}

Guess I'll try even more fluids. And yes I was peeing regularly!!!

I'm bringing my hydration backpack this meet so I'm not caught without fluids! (and don't make fun of my hat! :P )
Wish me luck!

Don't drink a lot of water without restoring your sodium and potassium levels! Just water flushes these out of the body.

Ahhh see now here's the kind of information I'm looking for!
(I was eating salty potato chips!!!  :-D )

I surfed the web for some helpful hints & all I could find was drink water & stay in the AC. Well duhh... if I HAVE to be out in the heat that is completely not going to help me cope!!!!

Ok, I've got a giant can of mixed nuts packed. (yeah Walmart!) Salty & protein filled. We usually bring banana's & I planned to stop tonight to get some fresh ones for the cooler. We'll have our usual 5 gal's of Gatorade in the pit & 8oz water shots.

Any other helpful hints or power foods I can try out? I already know I'm going to be running my butt off this meet & we know it's going to be hot! I really really really want to get through this one without falling victim to the heat!  :-o

I'll have water in a cooler in my truck bed and I get all over the track.  PLEASE everyone, feel free to grab one - no need to ask.  I think everyone knows my truck but just in case - it's the bright blue Dodge Dakota with stripes on the hood and tailgate.  If we run out I'll get more.

Good points on the electrolytes and food.  I'll go looking for sugar free Gatorade, which could get interesting.

NO FAIR making fun of big hats at this meet!  I'll be wearing my big floppy hat and plenty of sunscreen (which I also have in the truck if anyone needs it).  And stay in the shade (yeah, right).  Those who volunteered last year may have selected the ECTA monster umbrella.  Use 'em if ya got 'em!

Powerade Zero is the only 0 calorie no sugar 'ade' that I have found.  Luckily, most of the flavors arfe pretty good and not too sweet tasting.  Grape is my favorite.  I usually alternate between that and water when running on track in this kind of weather starting the day before!  This weekend I will be spectating at MIR instead of running at Maxton so you all have a good time and stay safe so I can see you in Loring.

POPC  Pee Often Pee Clear.  Wildland Firefighting Mantra

Also, Don't drink sport drinks exclusively, If you need that "flavor" to drink something Dilute it.  Sport drinks can play games with your operating systems

Just a comment from a Wisconsin guy that was run over by June 2009's heat.......

One of the best parts of road racing in the heat is the 'warm up' lap right after you toss half a bottle of cold water down the back of your leathers. That first lap around nicely freeze dries the water and you can grid in relative comfort.  :-)

Obviously there is no warm up lap in LSR....that refreshing blast of cold water turns your leathers and helmet into a terrarium!  :-P

At Maxton, that ice cold water starts to warm up awefully quick and I swear it comes close to boil when you are waiting for the preceding vehicle to clear the track. Half way down the airstrip it is an even odd bet that your attachments are going to get poached!

Hope this is a help to another Yankee or even a Canuck.

Mark

p.s. Thanks to DW Photos, I have a great photo of a big guy tucked on a little MX bike with one very FOGGY face shield.

We arrived here at the Pine Acres Motel in Laurinburg an hour ago.  The temp outside has since plummeted -- to about 96F.  The stories and rumors about high temps are true, so stock up on ice and sports drinks and liquids.  We stopped at a fresh fruit stand and got some peaches to eat at the track - yet another way to stay hydrated and tastefully satisfied, too.

Jon,, do you have enough time to turn those Peaches into some good old peach brandy or shine before I get there ?

Sipping on some good home brew at sunset,,, wow what fun !!!

I got to the track around 10:30am and left at 5:00pm,, Not a drop of rain while I was there,,, Temps from 10:30 to 2:30 right at 82 to 83 degrees between 2:30 and 5:00pm it gradually warmed to 88 degrees when the clouds let the sun through.
