My seat back is three inches from the shoulder bar. Can I use 2 or 3 inch wide aluminum strapping? What square area on the seat back? Can the shoulder bar be drilled and tapped to hold the brace or should I use muffler clamps?

We have never drilled any parts of the cage tubing,,, what we do is weld on tabs and bolt thru the tabs.
Muffler Clamps for a seat brace ? Hmm I would not think so...but you need an answer from someone in Tech.

That gives me new insite on the bar side. How big a pad should I have where it bolts to the seat? Have you ever seen an I/O port seat back brace? Looks like that uses muffler clamps around the shoulder bar to hold the adjustable brace. I know I can fabricate my own for a lot less than $89 + shipping.

The Auto Power and the I O Port set uos are nice and even for $90 not a bad price, but you could make something just as strong and functional for less than $30 if you have a welder....
The Pad needs to be as wide as the flat part of the seat.. Mine is about 12" wide. If you are going to make a tube and plate/pad setup, I would think a 3 x 8 pad would be OK as a Minimun,, I would prefer a 3" x 10" pad if it will fit your seat back,, don't want the brace to spear through the seat back. I would also us at least 3/16 to 1/4 plate and bend a 90 degree lip to provide more strength.
Just my thoughts...
Good Luck

I never use a tube pointing fore and aft, ie. into the driver's back. It is too rigid and can act as a spear, easily displacing or breaking a vertebrae. Use a flat plate and put a double break in it so that there is some give in the case of rear impact to absorb energy. Attach that to the shoulder bar on the cage and to a plate on the back of the seat at the other end. The plate should be substantial enough that it can dissipate some of the energy.

Here is a pic of my seat back brace. It is bolted to the seat with FOUR 3/8 Grade 8 bolts.
The flat plate goes over the roll cage back/shoulder bar, is trimmed to fit and is bolted to 12" wide cage tab with THREE more Grade 8 bolts. (I will try to find a better pic of that)
