I'll try to get some reporting on runs -- but not today. All we're doing is inspecting.  I've seen all of a half-dozen cars in the inspection line -- and dozens of bikes.  Nancy's out getting photos of the cars -- among other things.  Here are some of the bikes:

I'll put up some car photos in a little while -- gotta get back to inspecting.

No, dang it -- having issues with the MoTeC reading some of the sensors wrong -- so we'll run it on motor but with the fairing.  Anyway -- I'm still re-learning how to ride it after 5 years or so.  Getting ready for Bville -- little steps are good enough.

Back at the motel for the evening, although a bunch of us will meet at the Mexican restaurant in an hour for supper (yes, at Maxton we stay at the same motel and eat at the same restaurants).  Here are the rest of the car photos from today:

Bill Murphy and the "Rustang":

That's it for Nancy and me for tonight.  Driver meeting tomorrow at 8.30 AM followed by racing -- as long as the emergency crews show up and it doesn't rain.

Good night, ladies and gentlemen.

Track was damp this morning = but we've now started running.  Fastest bikes and cars -- later, when the track is bone dry.  Now we're running bikes, fastest so far is under 120.  Stay tuned, folks.

Okay -- now we're running at full tilt.  9676 bike  -- a new-gen 'Busa -- runs 191.463.  A car or two have gone down the track -- 170 here, 190 there -- we're at it, boys and girls.  I'm in pre-stage -- about ten at a time are sent to the line for staging.  Works well this way -- no big crowd up there this way.  9602 Rod Nessman runs 161.479 mph.  Anyway, we move up every now and then, so I have a difficult time doing both moves and posts.  I'll try to keep up.

9652 bike runs 184.513. Sorry I don't post names or vehicle information -- it isn't announced, and my memory isn't all that good that I know each and every racer.  Deal with it, hey?

1223 is up -- the little Falcon Ranchero straight-6. 96.269 with nasty sounds coming from the motor at the lights.

Hold the course -- those noises did some work on the course.

We're in the front of the pre-stage line now -- so this'll be my last 'til after I run.  The 9702 circle track car just ran a 172, Bill Warner about to run next.

Bill -- 5112 -- runs 268.202 mph.  Engine missed a few beats in second and third, too.  Gotta check that tuneup, Bill. . .

Title: Re: Maxton results ! ! Post them please
Post by: Seldom Seen Slim on May 22, 2010, 01:02:11 PM
Nope, no sign of Shane here.  Let's see -- Bill Warner ran another 268, Dean Sabat a 219 on the 1000 turbo.  Dean's on the way to ride the "gas bike", as #1107 is known.  The big-motored Victory just ran a 163.886.

Cars -- unh, the Van Blarcom roadster a 196, didn't I hear?  The 1223 Falcon Ranchero got it back together (didn't break, just had a poor run earlier) and ran 123.

Josh Owen just ran a 184 on the #1302 bike.  9150 next -- blazes through the lights a 106.905!!!

Ah, let's see what I've missed.  Fiorst of all -- a quick look at the weather shows some nasty looking stuff about a half hour west of here, but the wind is calm -- so no worries yet.  It's cloudy and about 83 right now -- flag shows a bit of a tailwind, maybe 3-6 mph.

I ran a 193.95 -- and found the front brake a tad HOT when back in the pit.  Guess it swelled up a bit from sitting too long.

A Silverado p/u just ran a 121 mph.  Old Ford p/u runs 99.24 -- running P/P.  Mmm, only 21.something mph faster in 60 years?

ZX10 bike through the lights at 190.  #9623 Ninja 250 goes 112.260

Maybe, maybe not.  I don't have a run log -- and don't remember what the number is.  Maybe if you give me a hint -- but only MAYBE>>>

I think it was the Van Blarcom roadster that just ran a 198.449 -- didn't hear the announcement of the number.

The Crosley Ice Cream Truck just went through at about 72 mph -- with the crowd and the announcer shouting at him -- "PULL YOUR CHUTE!".  Nancy's getting a photo for you now -- I'll have it posted in a while.

The black clouds are getting near:

Joe Ledford in the #55 roadster ran a 194 just now.  A nice quiet 'Vette runs through at 125.902 mph.  Had the headlights on -- that must be it.

#9165 next -- Porsche 149.271 mph

Thanks, Walt -- I'll see if I can find anything for you.
Title: Re: Maxton results ! ! Post them please
Post by: Seldom Seen Slim on May 22, 2010, 03:17:08 PM
Okay, Walt -- the 9232 ran a 190.2 for a record, but overheated the motor just enough later  - to pop a seal in the water pump (think that's what he told me).  They're on the trailer right now but'll be back on the track in the morning.

The preceding report brought to you after a quick ride on the pit bike.  Wayne Jesel, by the way, said they got a record -- but had his head under the engine and I couldn't hear what else he said.  And HVAC MPP ran a 162.5.

So -- no more sprinkles at the pits, and Nancy and I moseyed to pre-stage -- only to hear that only 150 and under vehicles are being sent to the staging line.  Okay -- and just now a bike ran a 203, and a minute ago a roadster at 176, and Sal Spatafora a 220.  Hunh?

So -- there we were, in line, and the rain slowed and picked up and drizzled and stopped and started and -- we went back to the pit, put the bike in the trailer, and here we are at the Pine Acres waiting to see where dinner will be celebrated tonight.  I doubt that we missed any runs -- will fill you in in the morning if we did.

Oh, yeah -- Bill Warner did make a 272 pass -- .384, I think it was.  Don't know what his biggest number was last month so I can't compare down to the nuts.

See you tomorrow.  List your questions and I'll try to answer 'em later on.

We're running already -- started just about a few minutes after 8 -- like we were supposed to do.  Donna Timney ran a 151 or so, I managed a 196.7, and Sal Spat. ran a 219 just now.  Bill Warner's in line, Joe Ledford pulled the chute too early and ran a 184 (no issue, just too soon, I think).  I'm off fior another run in a minute but wanted to latcha know we're at it.  Oh, yeah, the Jesel roadster did a 204, Josh Owen a 204 and bitching about the new fuel pump making too much pressure and too fat (what a life, hey?).  Ed Brace had a funky run -- didn't hear his speed but he took the short shut down turnoff -- and was repacking the chute when I motored past.  A Ninja 250 just went past at 114.

Gonna go ride the bike -- be back later.

Dean Sabat just ran a 224 on the 100 turbo bike.  The 9232 car -- Red Hot Racing -- turned in a 180 something.  Bill Warner made a 161 pass and then there was a track hold while the officials looked for some debrix (not from Bill's bike, though).  I made a run -- unh, let's say I wanted to check out the shift light and the wheelspin light, okay?  And there was a 10 mph or more crosswind -- wish I had had a camera on the bike to shown the horizon at a 15-degree angle as I went through the lights.

Sure is funky sorta cloudy weather -- cool and heavy air -- in the high 60s and muggy as the dickens.  It's 10.25 in the morning.  I'll get back on here once we start running again.

The Zanefield Bell mini pickup just had a big oildown run, so we'll have a break for a while.  The Victory bike -- with the big inch motor -- must have had a great leave or something.  The rider just showed me his timing slip -- 504.3 mph.  I wonder if maybe this is one of those runs where a grasshopper jumped across the lights. . .

The wind has come around to a quartering headwind, and the clouds are still heavy over us.  At least it's kinda bright.

Back with more, later.

Here we are -- still shuffling and sweeping and using the blower and so on.  Getting near the end of the job -- and the weather is still fine.  Still kinda bright but 100% cloud cover.  Temp around 70 and gentle headwind.  Stay tuned.

Title: Re: Maxton results ! ! Post them please
Post by: Seldom Seen Slim on May 23, 2010, 03:55:07 PM
Gee, all those nice comments - and I didn't post anything after all.  The meet's over -- with nothing big to report about the last hour or so.  We had a 1 1/2 hour long kitty litter shuffle break.  The weather mellowed -- wind died and the cloud cover lightened a bit, so we went back to running.  But while the weather was mellow -- the air was very humid and that kept speeds down.  And Bill Warner was asked to keep speeds down so he didn't run over 250 for his last run or two.

There's an interesting reality check in itself.  "Keep speeds down -- he didn't run over 250".  I remember going to Maxton for the first time about ten years ago and getting to know Scott Guthrie and Rich Yancy and a few others that ran fast bikes -- and the concept of more than just a very few folks running over 200 was completely unknown.  Now -- bikes run over 2 bills on motor day in and day out, and -- well, what can I say but that 250 is the new 200?

Okay -- about the rest of the runs after the break.  By then quite a few folks had put the race vehicle on the trailer and there were only a few racers still running.  The roadster Wayne Jesel works with was doing well, and Joe Ledford ran a nice run, and Steve Van Blarcom was ever so close to where he wanted to be-- but the Sunday air just wasn't good to much of anyone.  The 9232 car had a goofy run -- because the push truck evidently snagged the chute release wire and triggered the laundry.  The chute was under the push truck for the first hundred feet of the run, and the car ran all of 80 miles per hour or so -- tugging a well-blossomed chute behind it through the lights.

That's the kind of stuff that happened at Maxton this afternoon.  Well, good news on one or two points - Donna Timney, the first lady of the E C T A, made a handful of runs on the Twin Jugs Racing GSXR 1000.  Donna's best was a 168 -- nice run, and I've got photos and some video to show for it.  I'll get them posted when we're in a motel, not driving down the road.  The file is too big to transfer when going form cell to cell to cell.

Good time -- and we'll be back in about 5 weeks.  Later, boys and girls.

Jon and all -
THANKS for the coverage, pics, etc.  I feel like a piece of my life is missing when I don't make a meet.  This is the first whole meet I've missed in probably three years - and I DON'T like it!

Me and the Buzz Bomb will be back in June, Lord willin' and the crick don't rise.

Later

Thanks for all the updates and the pictures.

I had a great time this weekend at Maxton! My name is Bud Johnson and I was driving the black Silverado. This was my rookie weekend and I will be back next time. That 121mph is GM’s way of protecting us!   :-D I will have all the limiters turned off and maybe get a handle on what all the Superchips tuner can do next time. It is my everyday driver so I won’t get too crazy with it. (famous last words) I have a ’29 Ford coupe in the garage that finally has its purpose.  It will be an LSR car in one form or another!
Everyone I have met has been great to get along with and I have never seen so many smiling faces and people having this much fun at a racing event.  Hope to see everyone next month!
Bud Johnson

Meet results are posted. I did a quick update so please let me know if anyting is out of whack.
I still have a few updates to do to last months results. I'll try to get to any fixes in the next day or so.
Please review the results and let the ladies know if anything looks incorrect (classes, records, points...)

Thanks!

Thanks for all those updates and photos.  I have to toot my little 500cc horn as I finally upped the production record by 4.5 mph to 125.9 plus some change.  Took me 8 events and 2+ years but I can finally claim a ECTA record.  I won't be there in June but will see everyone in Loring, spectating at BUB, and back in Maxton later in the season.

As always, thanks to the ECTA staff and all their volunteers and all the racers for making it another wonderful weekend. I spent my first "camping" weekend down there and I can see right now it won't be my last. Sure is peaceful down there at night though I spotted what I think was a coyote crossing the track Sat. nite about dusk. Kinda spooky. I wonder what other kinds of critters come out after dusk?
Heres a few WHOOPS pics I came across while I was editing. Maybe ya'll can have some fun adding some sub-titles.

Thanks again and see ya'll in June.

Something we three have in common - we all married WAY up!  Gotta put Keith in that category, too.  In fact, any of us in the LSR world are darn lucky to find women who will put up with us, and those who will actually PARTICIPATE - well, that's just too cool.

For those that don't know Nancy's story -- she went with to the Salt the first few times -- so I could drool at the bikes and cars and she could get some sun.  That's all -- had NO interest in sitting on a bike and going down the course.

Now she's a couple of mph off her red hat -- only 10 years and a handful of records later.  She says that once she manages to gain entry to the Bonneville 200 MPH Club - that she'll hang up her leathers and go back to sunning while I race.  I have had the wisdom to NOT say anything like "Yeah, we'll see about that!".  I'll let her go at her own discretion and if she decides maybe just one more run, maybe just one more record, just one more class -- she won't be held back by feeling that she needs to keep her "promise" to quit.

Yup -- I've got a winner.

If she won't -- I'll be glad to do so for you.  But she's driven a car (E/CPro Camaro) at Maxton -- so it's not out of the question.  Camaros and roadsters are not the same, yes, I know well -- but what the heck, you offer her the opportunity and let her decide.  We do keep a -15 firesuit in our trailer, just in case someone offers a ride. . .

I talked with the guys with that car last year.  They said they did what they could to remove or at least minimize the effect of the stagger, given that we don't turn left all the time.  That was while they were in tech so I don't know how the car felt on the track as I didn't get back to them after a pass.  It was cool to see it, at any rate.

Bring one of your sprinters out and see how fast it can go.

The open wheel oval track cars (Sprinters and Midgets) run in the Circle Track category at Maxton (ECTA only, not an SCTA category).  I haven't been able to attend any meets in amost two years so i haven't actually seen the car in the photo.  The only one I've seen run was John Meyers' midget and he ran 170.  His car holds the fuel and gas records for F/CT.  The Maxton Circle Track records for the sprinter sized engines (358, 360, 410 etc in ECTA classes B and C) are all held by NASCAR style stock cars and are all pretty stout records (all over 200mph).   If you drop in a smaller v8 the records in D/CT - ( 261 thru 305 cid.) are: Gas 165.932 and Fuel 166.064.  The sprinter in the photo might be the car that holds these records (not sure - just guessing)

Remember . . . going over 175 requires a chute.  Might be interesting to see what happens when you pull a chute on a short wb sprint car at over 175.

I don't see any reason that these cars could not also run as Lakesters (be sure to check minimum wheelbase restrictions).  But again the records in all but one or two of the comparable Lakester classes are in the 200 plus range.

Post by: sprintcj on June 01, 2010, 05:32:27 PM
WOW littleliner that talk of pulling a chute at 175 with an 89 inch wheelbase sent chills up my spine, that would probably be like forgetting to tighten the top wing front struts(amazing the altitude that car can reach).I guess I will just continue on with my other project, plus I told my wife I wasn't going to race sprints any more.
