My ever suffering ZX12 & I am planning on making 2010 BUB our 1st foray onto the salt.
Q: is the hotel situation as tight as I hear it is for Speedweek? Any tips?
sorry to be such a noob, but I hear that white stuff calling
-
nowhere near as bad as speedweek. Shop around for best prices but they are usually under $80 a night
-
come on man.....do it right....
bring a sleeping bag, you can sleep for free at the bend in
the road.....rough it a day or two...then you can get
rooms easily a day or so into it...
for some reason....bub 2009 had virtually no bikers camping
at the bend......whats the deal with that...?...
Joe :)

I had a medical emergency on Tues. of Speed Week and had to go home. If that hadn't have come up I would of been there thru all the meets. In my opinion the Bend in the road is fine, if you prepare ahead of time for intermitent crappy weather! The food at the Salt Flat Cafe is good and the people that stay at the Bend in the road are the finest of peoples! See you there next year!!! Crow.
-
The salt flats cafe is the other reason to go to Bonneville IMO!!
-
I have done a couple of nights at the bend in the road during BUB but with rooms being as little as $45 on a week night it is hard not to take advantage of it. Friday and Saturday tend to be much higher. This year during Speedweek I camped at the bend and it is a completely different experience (thanks Willie, Old Crow and others for the great hospitality!).
My experience for BUB is the Nugget for $45 and the EconoLodge $35. Makes it worth a hot shower at the end of the day.

cole...come on man....Entropy is a FNG.....still moldable
and impressionable......easy target...etc...

Entropy, after a good nights sleep to think on this I have a clearer picture of the issue of overnighting. My first trip to BUB I arrived in the late evening and slept in the cab of the truck at the bend in the road. Meeting the other folks camping there made for the perfect introduction to the Salt Flats. Regardless of room availability always be ready to camp and you will meet some great racers to enjoy a camp fire with.

:-DGlad you enjoyed yourself Cole. See you again in '10..... (Maybe even borrow a shower from ya if ya go for the high priced livin quarters). C U on the Salt! Crow.

Crow and others:
In the back of the Truck stop salt flats cafe are showers you can take from what I remember (afterall it is a truck stop), I think the cost is only a few dollars and I think they provide the towels?
John
-
:-o Your right John! Completly forgot about that......7 dollars and they do give you BIG towels, wash cloth and the condition of the shower's are excelent! Don't forget the large glass of Apple cider, ice cold either! Crow.

Hey I stayed at the Bend, during Speedweek and BuB..
Ya mustsa seen the ugly, old, overloaded, 750 Honda Four when I was there..
Altho I just threw my jacket down, and sleeping bag on top of that.. so when I left, looked like no one had been there.
Get up with the sun, eat brekkie at the Salt Flats cafe.. great food.. breakfast is cheaper than the showers .. :-o
crow, was wondering why I never saw ya at Speedweek..

It's a military term for use to describe a New Guy. I believe  there is a pejorative the begins the phrase that would be squashed by the adult filter installed here on the board. But if you use a little imagination, I think you'll be able to figure it out...

 754..... was camped up on the gravel by the tear drop trailors......I had the flat black chopper with the ape hangers and Moon Eyes on the tank.. Met a bunch of people.. Also sold 50/50 tickets for SSS at the Salt talks, had on my Old Crow Speed Shop crew shirt and cowboy hat. Will be doing the same and in the same place in 2010! C U there! Crow.
-
I think I did spot you at Salt Talks but you looked kinda busy..
You were in the trailers by the gravel trap? I rode thru that, almost came to a standstill, then give er.. really thought I would not make it out.. :-o
Told a guy on a dirtbike to try it, he was surprised at how hard it was to ride thru.. :-o
Yeah I rolled thru to the end of the campers, only one camp past me. roll in late, leave early.. leave no trace..
-
Where can I park an old motorhome with a nice aluminum trailer, with my bike on it? I've been to the salt once, but not sure where to camp for the nights while we're there. Later Rich
-
Bend in the Road is free..
-
Or for about $25-30 a night you can stay at the KOA campground in town and have full hookups plus cable TV.
-
The last time we stayed at KoA - a few years back - they even had wi-fi included with the rent. Not at all a bad place to stay.

-
:-D Well I uess it pays to ride a Harley! My old pan/shovel made it in and out of the gravel with no problems! ( But I was nervouse a time or two!. Crow.
-
Thanks for the info, but where is bend in the road. New guys, ya gota love us. Thanks Rich

There's only one road leading from town/the interstate into the Salt Flats. You've got no options -- you must take it. The road runs straight from the I-80 exit/truckstop for about a mile or a little less, then turns right at a 90-degree corner and goes for about 4-5 miles to the end of the pavement. That right turn IS "the Bend in the Road" -- it's the only turn so therefore is easy to use as a point of reference. By the same token -- the end of the pavement is known as "Land's End" -- because it is.

Looks like this

It's in the regulations that first timers must camp out on the salt. Think of it like boot camp. First toot is at 0:500. By 0:530 you must be showered, dressed and have breakfast cooked and ready for the rest of us to arrive by 0:600 hours. By 0:630 hours our tents/canopys must be up and ready for the day. True salt runners are no allowed a hotel room until their third year on the salts. I hope this doesn't discourage you from coming to join us--
-
Sorry Flyboy- no camping out on the Salt during the BUB event.
Gosh you make it sound horrible to be up at 5:30...
we're all out there before the sun come up.
There is nothing more spectacular than a sunrise over the Salt.
sigh...only five months to go
See you on the Salt,

PS pre-reg is open! :-D
-
Thanks for the alert about Pre-registration being open, Linnea. I already checked it out. I found that those new on-line PDF forms do not work with Internet Explorer 8.0 like I have, but do work with Firefox and older Explorers. Not a problem. You will be seeing my registrations soon!
Thanks for all your work.
