Title: El Mirage Update
Post by: landsendlynda on November 13, 2009, 11:32:51 PM
Just got off the phone with John Noonan so here's the latest:

GLEN IS THERE!!!

Weather:  high 20s at night; mid 40s to low 50's daytime.
Course Conditions:  CRAP, as they have been all year.  they are running across 2 previous courses to try to make shinola out of sh*t!

They already have around 110 people there and are expecting there to be a total of 150 plus.
There are several racers from Canada as well.

Scott Guthrie (spelling?) is there ran 265 Monday at a "Private" testing, is hoping to top the 240 top speed record.
Scott Beirs is there with Larry Forstahls (sp?) twin engine GSXR 1100.
Another Canadien Carl (gixxerfixxer) with a turbo charger GSXR1000 has been 230 is also running.

John Noon is going for his 3rd SCTA championship.
He will be running his sidecar going for a 187 record (I believe he said that would be the fastest sidecar record for both SCTA and ECTA) The sidecar is scheduled to run 3rd in lineup....his motorcyle will be #15.

Either John Noonan or John Buddenbaum will win SCTA Motorcyle Points Championship, since both are SDRC members, either win will go to their club.

Racing is scheduled to begin around 8am.

Okay, I believe that's all he told me...so there ya have it, if I messed up the spelling..correct me..if you have questions...I probably can't answer them!!  Or, I can make something up!  If there is something specific you want me to ask when John calls tomorrow...let me know!!  Just be gentle with me okay?  This is my first time as narrator!

Lynda,

Scott is not here however Shane Stubbs (sponsored by Scott Guthrie racing) who ran 260+ at Loring on the 1.5 mile long paved course is here and  remember El Mirage a is a tad shorter with half the traction however I am sure he can easily run a stellar top speed  for the dirt venue.

The twin engine bike was built by Larry Forstall and is a work of art   Larry is a true racer and a great ambassador to the LSR sport!

This event has several High HP Turbo Busas and we hope all racers make safe runs and return to achieve personal bests and many records

With the SCTA points either John Buddenbaum/Eric Noyes or myself are in a prime position to with the championship. n :-D

We had some wind however it was almost not worth mentioning however later in the day we had more however it was a tail wind.

Thanks to Lynda for posting, call you tomorrow as I am not always able to post here.

Yes just to make clear the double GSXR 1100 had some last minuted issues that we ran out of time to fix it.

So Scott Beairsto and myself are not there although we had worked till the last possible minute to go

That double just needs some TLC and will be back next year

Good luck all!

Bike stuff heard through the grapevine (and you know how the grapes can distort things) so take the info for what it is.  Noonan shut down early on the sidecar 89mph, later went 211 on the naked bike (m/c top speed thus far), Pat Womack also ran 211 naked, just a tick off Noonans pace.  Shane San Miguel ran a personal best 198.7 mph in 1350 PP.  Shane Stubbs was taking care of license passes he will stretch it's legs in the A.M.   Was wondering how Scott Stites ran.  Anyone?
Title: Re: El Mirage Update
Post by: Bville701 on November 14, 2009, 10:01:15 PM
Don't know about Scott Stites, but Dr. Jeanie Pflum also set a record today on Jamie Wagner's M/C at 190 MPH on a 186MPH record.
Title: Re: El Mirage Update
Post by: Rchop on November 14, 2009, 11:27:09 PM
Scott Stites ran 182.763 on his first pass with a short shift to 6th. He ran 185.522 on the second pass with what he thinks is a clutch that is going bad. He thinks there is more speed in it if he can lay down a good run.
Title: Re: El Mirage Update
Post by: John Noonan on November 15, 2009, 12:47:08 AM
OK we have been busy..here is what I know..

Stites ran 185 and was ready to pack it in with a hurt clutch, we looked and it was only a broken sprocket cover so I had a spare to loan.  He will try for a better speed tomorrow.

Cathy Butler ran about 177 on her second pass for a new record on her 599cc Honda all motor.

We had a dead battery on the side car and could not keep it lit so after a battery charging we ran 184+ on the 187 record we ran last meet.

Our open bike ran 211+ and was top speed for the meet (bikes) on our naked bike until Pat Womack ran a stellar 223.3 on his faired Turbo Busa.  We were on a great run until we hit sixth and killed a tire so Scott took me to the local shop for a replacement.

Fireman Jim running under the "Moreland Noonan Spyke" entry ran a phenomenal record speed of 192 + mph on the Waters, Higgins, Award GSXR 750.

Buddenbaum/fabrication/Budfab streamliner set yet another record at 117 from what Michelle said.

All for now as I have to go look for my phone..

Good luck to all the racers tomorrow.

J

Forgot to mention that Freud here!  ! ! Awesome!

We were pleasantly surprised to see Tonya Turk as well, she was being followed by some guy (very closely) with a diet Coke can in his hand  :-D

Jill Iverson ran 107 on her bike and also got a record, she is also running for the SCTA points championship as we are with the sidecar.

Found my phone on the charger..

Thanks for the updates, Mr. Bvillercr (whose name I can't remember right now or I'd thank you by name).  I, and many of the regulars (heck, visitors, too) appreciate the updates.  Ask if you can get the run logs and, if so, send 'em to me and I'll post.  I know that Dan Warner will send me a write-up eventually, but if you see him -- tell him I'm looking forward to it (and thank him for his stuff, too).

Back to outdoor chores for me.  Winter's coming soon!

Another fun meet with great people! It was nice to finally meet Freud, Glen, and Stan Back........all stand up guys.

I want to send a thank you out to all the people who helped me this year. Big thanks are in order especially for Randy Nelson, Kent Riches, Bob Moreland, and John Noonan (and Mrs. Noonan). These guys continually help me go a little faster each meet, thank you. Each meet at El Mirage this year with the exception of October I was able to get a few more mph, so all in all it was a successful year.

Good luck to all of the racers in the off season!

John, didnt you go to the (inside) on one of your runs??

Lost cam signal and it shut down on the sidecar..went to the right in case parts were missing, all was good and made a pass 15 minutes later..

Congrats to Pat Womack on his Faired Hayabusa for getting the top speed of the meet at 223+ or so?  I don't believe any cars went faster?

We were able to again have the top speed of the year for a run only a tick faster than Pat's with a 223.7 mph run and this has again given Noonan racing the motorcycle top speed trophy every year we have raced at El Mirage.

Big congrats to Pat for running so well, Shane for running 198 (his best at El Mo) and Jill Iverson for the record on her little Indian.

Scott Stites ran a personal best with his 160+ hp Hayabusa with a 185mph+ run

Cathy Butler ran a record pass of 17? on her 599cc Honda CBR

San Diego Roadsters once again won the SCTA lakes points chase.

We missed Kent and Randy..hope to see you at one of the banquets.

Freud, awesome seeing you again and if you are around please call so we can take in a fine meal..

All for now..

Any questions post up..

John,

I am confused as usual so when you say you made another pass 15 minutes later, that must have been on another entry correct? I saw you come through staging riding a small bike and the announcer made a comment on you.

Looks like to me based on overall points from last month and the points received from this last weekend of racing that the Buddenbaum Fabrication motorcycle streamliner #4949 won the motocycle points championship and also overall points leader at 1411 points (And I pesonally think that is the most awesome total points number in the world)

The number one car by my addition is the #2132 Honda RSX having a total of 1398 total points...

Geat job all

Troy,

I thought it was because they changed the entry name from Budfab Streamliner to Buddenbaum Fabrication ?

I was not aware you could not have an alternate driver/rider on an entry for the SCTA/Lakes points championship?

Is this also in the El Mirage procedures?

Great seeing everyone again.  Hat's off to all the SCTA crew for another excellent event

The Casper Report:  Got one run in Saturday at 141mph.  Truck went to 153, then electronics defueled it and coasted through the WELL MARKED finish line. :D
Got back in line and didn't make it.  Sunday, made some changes, but still shut down at 153 but netted a 145 trap.  Had time for another pass, made some bizarre tuning changes, and truck did a Rice Crispy Runup, Snap-Crackle-Pop, but somehow got past the 153 up to a 157 before the lights.  Couple more passes and I think I would have figured the problem out.  Truck handled very well, with little wheelspin.

It was so cold Friday night, that the truck would not start Saturday AM.  If the air is not hot enough, we can't ignite fuel.  We gave it a blow job by getting Kat's truck's exhaust pointed at the air inlet and reving it up, which worked.  Diesel exhaust is mostly just hot air, since there is no throttle.  So Sat night, Kat warmed up the truck at 12, I got up at 3a, and did it again, then again at 5am.  We also got the nose pointed at the heater outlet of our MH and put on Tom's Spiderman blanket on the hood it keep it warm.  Once again, Spiderman saves the day.

Now we are going drag racing again with the truck.  Put the 4x4 back on, remove the ballast and regear.  Hoping for a 9 sec ET with Kat driving.

Had a great time at Elmo despite the conditions which went from meerly terrible to truly horrible. Cold!!! Snow on surrounding mountains. Very windy on sunday.
I took my brother Pat as pit crew and another couple of friends who had never been before. Bart and John were both impressed with the friendliness and cheerfulness of everyone they met.
Got a decent run in on sat with wheelspin the whole way. Ran 192 on a 191 record. Tried again sunday but course was really going away and there was a 15-20 mph headwind, darn. I suspected I would be slower but this is the last chance for a speed run until next year!!
Big thanks to John and the rest of the SDRC for all the help.

Nice talking with you John!  Did the CEL come back on during the trip home?  If so, I can program that out by loosening up the parameters.

Didn't go as fast as I hoped, it was kind of embarrassing going slower with the bigger engine.  I know it is capable of making more HP than the 403ci engine on the dyno, but I suppose dirt <> dyno ...

I believe they must be in the stock location. They do not need to "roll up or down" and can be permanently attached lexan (polycarbonate sp?) or stock.

These appear to be outside of the original position which is allowed in Comp Coupe but not in altered as I read the rules. I like you are only looking at the picture...........Good Luck

That's the only picture I could find from last weekend.

It appears, that the glass has brackets holding it in the window opening and that the "glass" is on an outer step, perhaps .5" outboard rather that in the stock position???

If so, should be an easy fix.

Yup, you guys figured it out.  Windows don't meet ALT rule specs.  As for next year, I'm pretty sure that motor is now no longer legal.  Heard Pete was going to build one that was but we'll have to see how well the new legal one compares to the old one.

..nice job Shane on your "elmo best licensing pass"....should be fun
next year to see you make a true best attempt.....

I do not know the time of his last pass as I left right after round three, but I thought his last pass he was allowed to open it up. In round three as he left the line the announcer said he had to keep it under 200 mph. So, his fourth round pass should of been unrestricted??

This question is not completely related to this thread, but here goes.  I saw a picture old an old black belly tank at El Mirage today.  It had "Old Crow" on the side near the pilot and it is an example of the dimpled golf ball theory, applied.  I liked it a lot so I put the picture on my screen saver.  It was in a V4 class.  I never heard of a V4 engine.  Are these specially made by chopping a V-8 in half, or are they from some industrial application?  Are they flatheads?

From Everett, Monday evening, following my first visit to THE LAKES..........

Mutha Mary, I was impressed and humbled: FINALLY.... after my dear friend , Peter Kier, from LA told me about going to the lakes in 1952.

I have been to Bonneville 126 times since 1963.  Little did I know the heritage of the elegance and prestige of B'ville. Racing on

the lake beds of California was the dirty beginning of LSR. The accomplishments of the early racers was beyond belief. As Dickie Milne drove

across the edge of the lake bed, Marlo Treit told me of his first experience there.  Long ago, Cook Neilsen labeled me The Old Softie. It

really hit home as we entered the home of racing when it was at it's infancy. I recalled some of the stories that I heard at Gas Up. I could

relate to how basic racing was in the 1930's and following WWII.  I held the video camera out the window and recorded, with no narration

because I wasn't qualified to comment. I was allowed to experience a situation that was way beyond "my poor power to add or detract".

Silence and moist eyes compelled me.  Words failed me.  Silence kept me from revealing what a compelling world I had entered. It was

better to remain silent than to open my mouth have my emotion silence me.

My tour guide, Stan Beck, helped me find some of the people for whom I looked. He wasn't able to help me find Desotoman, the Langlo's

and several others to whom I had dedicated this trip. I was blessed when Scott Stites came up to me and introduced himself. I am so

impressed with the dedication of his wife and her unselfish dedication and bringing their Oh SO Young daughter to the dirt. She had other

obligations this week but she brings their child to the "home of hotrodding." And sometimes we worry about the basis for continuing

this sport. Just BELIEVE. Our children and wives DO UNDERSTAND.

Dan Warner, the Gold Coast Roadster and Racing Club that have gone way beyond anything I could ever expect in including me in their

club and group, Rochlitzer, Matt Williams, Adam. Wes and the Raspberry Rocket, Jim Jensen and the Holy Starting Area, John Noonan and

Michelle, Robbie Cohn, the disciples of Phil Freuidger, another example of the siblings extending their Fathers love for racing............. the

LeFevers, Kennedy, Waters, Wilson, Mike Manghelli,

The El Mirage Woman's Group, Judie and Joanne, Calloway's wife, who shall remain nameless because of my case of CRS.....

It's 11:25 PM. At 9 AM today I  received a warm hug from Tom Bryant in Redding. My day is too full to describe.

Add all of the humbling experiences that I have had this weekend and I am wasted, but I have recorded a promise to my self: I will return

to El Mirage and if I get lost, without any humility I will ask the Mayor for Guidance. For those that shared with me and I didn't mention you,

I'm sorry. Please accept my apologies.

Thank you to the racers of the past for the heritage and to the racers of the present.......THANK YOU for perpetuating it.

The Old Softie,

FREUD

AND to Glen Barrett for escorting me thru Georges "Walk thru Time, on the other side of the fence.

And Fast Freddie leaving a message on Kepner's cell fone, after he endured the harrassment called  Bret's Greeting.

John --

From what I understand, specialty heads will continue to be allowed.  There're probably gonna be new rules regarding the placement of the bore centers, crank centerline and extreme decking of the block.  All these were discussed regarding keeping the Vintage engines vintage.  In the unwritten, but now written, "spirit of the rules."

I guess some vintage engines were built with only a vestage of the block used.

John,

I have not heard anything different. Like Stan said many engines do not meet the "Spirit of the rule" and are a gutted shell of a motor. That is why we now have a rule book that is over 1/2" thick. LOL

PS. I will ask about this at the next meeting.

Freud and Stan,

I cannot believe I missed you guys. I was at the BMR pit on Sunday morning and Fast Freddy told me you were over at the Gold Coast Roadster pit. I went over there and nobody had seen you since the night before. Sorry I missed you guys. The pit area is just so big now it is hard to find people. I have been looking for Stan for 3 lakes meets now, found his car but no Stan. Well at least I am getting closer.

Sorry I missed you guys,

Tom G.

PS. Troy Langlo, it was nice talking to you and your Dad too.

I will find you, even if it's in your abode.

FYI the decision about the change to the vintage engine class rules still hasn't been made so I spoke too soon based on bad info I picked up last weekend.  But as it's been talked about I think the concern is legitimate.  I've NEVER heard a vintage four banger that ever ran like that.  Anyways, we'll find out soon enough what the final decision is.

If it is illegal to put an OHC setup on a set of Ardun's, or a Wayne and run in XXF or XXO, it should be illegal to put a OHC on a vintage 4 overhead. The same set of rules should apply to all Vintage Motors. IMO

Title: Re: El Mirage Update
Post by: jimmy six on November 18, 2009, 09:31:38 AM
I beleive it's because OHC conversions were available in the 30' and 40's. There none (OK very few) for the other vintage engines. Today new heads are being adapted to V4 engines.

IMO XF, XO,XXF & XXO engines should be left as they are............JD

JD,

Thanks for the clarification. I guess I get confused where in the rule book it states "For reasons of economy and historical authenticity, Vintage engine modifications are restricted to older technology levels, so far as practical."

Funny story...A guy named Mike calls me from Texas and says he's a Gear Grinder from San Antonio Texas. He's not an SCTA Gear Grinder, he belongs to the Gear Grinders car club in San Antonio, Texas. He wants to know if I can send him a Gear Grinder T-shirt and plaque and he would do the same. Which we did. That was just before Bonneville(which Sheri has worn every event since then). So Saturday a guy walks through my pit with a San Antonio Gear Grinder T-shirt on. And I say "Hey man, where did you get that shirt?" In which he replied that he got it in San Antonio and he's a member of the club there. So I said "Don't tell me that your name is Mike" and he said "No my name is Clarence" and he says that he knew the story about the t-shirt swap and he said as a matter of fact "I want to get a t-shirt and a plaque as well." So we made a deal, he bought two shirts, I bought him a plaque and he gave me a hat. He said he was there with his friend Jack and they had a long nose, severely chopped coupe that they were going to run. A couple of real nice guys that I really enjoyed talking with. They had to leave early Sunday, but it was a pleasure visiting with them and I look forward to seeing them in Bonneville in 2010.
It's a small,small world.
