Post by: zurferjoe on April 27, 2009, 06:16:58 AM
Hi fellow maniacs ,I would like to run a Bellytank V8 Flathead at Bonneville ,were can I get the tech spec from, so I know what to do and not . Would save me a lot of time and money ! Also is it still true that a flathead in a Bellytank has never done the 200mph .I find it hard to beleive but I have read it in a respectable magazine !!  Hope to hear soon all the best Zurferjoe

Joe, Go to the scta website linked at the this sites home page and buy a rule book.  Lakesters and Streamliners have the shortest requirements list of the car classes.  Lakesters... No streamlining outside of the inside of the narrowest tires.

Don't believe everything you read...  unless they specified on gas, unblown, without specialty heads....

No lack of XF lakesters over 2. I don't know if they are tanks or not. I'll bet some are.

All the XF lakester records except the unblown gas record is over 200mph.  The unblown gas lakester record is 196.557 held by the Spirit Of Modesto belly tank.  Tony

Mike,

Many years a go when I bought Beatty's tank, I asked him how fast it went with the flathead ford. He told me at El Mirage he had gone 199+ 3 times, but never could make 200, or he would have been the first to break 200 at the lake bed.

At Bonneville with the flathead ford he set the record at 211 or 212. Then he stretched the tank and put the oldsmobile motor in and ran a best of 255 one way. Last time the car ran was 1962 or 1963. Then it sat in his garage until the early 1980's when I bought it off of him.

Mike,I think you are off a few years on the belly tanks going over 200 mph. I am looking at my old programs and so far no flat head belly tanks/lakesters prior to 1955. At least at Bonneville. Tom Beatty got in the 200 club in 1955 at 211.267 mph.

Yes, Un-blown on gas with a flat head in a lakester is under 200.  All the specialty heads on a Flathead in a lakester are over 200 except XXF, blown gas held by Salt Lick at 192.684.  Tony

There's been no GAS unblown flathead lakester over 200.  The unblown FUEL record is 207+.

It's all in the Rule Book -- which I suggest you get before you go any further.

This is the current record list. If you are thinking of going after the XF/GL record I would hustle up. I understand a well known team with many flathead records are looking to push that one to 215-220 this year.

I am amazed that with all the development that has gone into the flathead - especially by members of the Land Speed Racing community - that a gas powered, normally aspirated flatty bellytank hasn't hit 200.

I mean, we're talking about the quintessential landracing combination - a bellytank and a flathead - it simply doesn't get more Bonneville than that.  This is a combination that's been around for 60 years.

Zurferjoe, to my mind, this would be one of the great milestones of this sport.  Go for it!
