I personally like this thread,. and thank Karl and The Texan crew for initiating it.
It would help us at LTA a lot to  gauge potential attendance if people would sign up.
You have no commitment, you owe no preregistration , it's just a general list for reference. I realize there are a ton of lurkers on the edge of deciding to attend or not, all based on if it will actually happen or not. This is typical for any first time event and we understand concerns on setting aside time and finances, sometimes a big trip and a big outlay. For what it's worth, especially as most of you don't know me personally, I wish I could share with you my personal enthusiasm and confidence that this will be a historic weekend in LSR. We have a great facility, excellent safety support, a good basic cadre of tech people and volunteers, and our Mentors at ECTA on speed dial if we screw up. Plus we've already spent a bunch of $$$ for  start-up on this. We are commited, it will happen.
If Karl, Inc can commit to come all the way from Texas now, can't you ?

Todd & I are planning to be there. Just put us down as something with 2 wheels as we plan to go but don't yet know if we'll bring bikes, beg a ride, or just show up for the fun of it from Fredericksburg, VA.

I'm still bouncing back and forth between this meet and Speedweek. I wish this lottery plan would come through, then I could do both, but until then I am on the fence.

"BTW

I guess you mean me ? (Don't know if that was a generic question for anybody reading this).
I started in LSR with a SCCA F500 converted to K/GL at Maxton...

http://www.ecta-lsr.com/Gallery/displayimage.php?album=topn&cat=9&pos=0

Got it up to a ECTA record of 121, then got distracted by my next car, a 2000 Honda Insight converted to G/ BGT . It's officially up to 177 at ECTA , unofficially other venue tested to 197. It will be at Loring , running in multiple classes from Street to Mod Sports...

http://www.ecta-lsr.com/Gallery/displayimage.php?album=topn&cat=0&pos=22

If I have room , I'll drag along the F500, too.
Oh, yeah originally from The Bronx NY, now live Uppa State NY.
On making a decision between SpeedWeek and Loring, consider the following.
There is no comparison , it is two separate events. SCTA's show  at Bonneville is the Ultimate LSR event in the Universe, track length is incomparable and it is The longest running most well established  and organized time trial existent. Everybody that's somebody in LSR is there.
Because of  this,  it is also comparatively expensive. Entries, rooms , and traveling in an environment when we don't know what gas will cost  by August. Lines are very long the first few days, and weather often shortens the event.
Our rooms are cheaper, $88, 4 @ rm, w/ LTA racers discount at the  Caribou Inn.
We are running at least two days, with provisions  for a third ( likely).
Preregistration will be $125, at the gate $150, spectators/crew $5 @ head all event long.
Pavement, cooler weather,  being there for Day One, it adds up.
Final disclaimer; I hope no other Timing Association feels slighted by the preceding, I only wish to put all the considerations I could think of on one page for your convenience. I've been to most of them, each incomparable to the other, all provide options to each other. In reality,I doubt if  ECTA and SCTA are  looking for any more participants in 2009,and  what they had last year would be fine, IMHO, FWIW.

Dean,
FORGET THAT DAMN FENCE~!!!!!!!!!

You already have a red hat!

Get yr skinny southern-fried butt to Maine!!

Ok, it's settled, right?!  :-D

Seriously, inaugural events are cool,  no one including the organizers are quite sure what to do and everybody pitches in, great camaraderie.

JohhnyCheese, Sleeperbusa and I ran at the 1st Texas Mile; 1 day about 35 participants, WAY FUN!!!!

I expect the first running of Bwana Bob's 1.5mile go-fast-a-thon will be even a bigger blast.

Nice to get a response from a Canadian, we're  hoping for a decent showing from our northern neighbors, especially Atlantic Canada, this is ideal for LSR enthusiasts from that area. I hope Scott and all you North of the border types spread the word, as the Canadian dollar is quite strong as of late, makes a trip south much easier than just a few years ago.
I had an unplanned visit to Halifax because of 9/11, our plane missed entry into the US by 15 minutes on that fateful morning.
Long story short, the fabled national hospitality of Nova Scotians once again arose in force for the thousands of temporary refugees, something I will never forget and will always hold dear in appreciation.
I personally look forward to seeing you all.

i have 2 buddies interested in coming too(hopefully they do), not sure on details(secret winter builds???). ones a 12R the other a busa. the 12 may be built with a possible dry shot. the busa was running a 65hp dry shot on stock internals last fall (drag) undetermined if anything will be upgraded. going to mention it to a couple more guys too(once i see them at the drag srip this spring). so possible turbo 10 and nitrous 14....
im trying to talk the old man into converting the slick n bar 12 into something more street/lsr friendly for the event, but he doesnt want to go much faster than 150mph. maybe we can talk him into it once he gets used to the bike on spray this spring
its a 3 hr drive to get to Loring from here in NB, we would be crazy to pass it up :-D

How long is your trailer ?  Or are you still in with the Nascar folks so we can borrow a long enough trailer to haul both our cars up and share the fuel ?

My enclosed trailer is only 22ft.

Considering the short time this particular thread has been posted on our forum, it's gotten a lot of views . The entire site has around 28,000 views, so there is a steady stream of interest being generated in our event. I think I remarked on this before, as I believe the majority of attendees will make the decision to show up relatively late compared to long established LSR events the caliber of ECTA and SCTA.
This position from us at the LTA seems predictable, as we are trying to promote the place, but I'd highly recommend to at least make reservations at the Caribou Inn, mention the LTA racers discount, you can always cancel.  http://www.caribouinn.com/flash/
We feel confidant to predict conservatively at least 25 competitors committed at this very early point.

I know there is lots of interest down here in Texas. In your planning for future events I hope you will think about maybe not haveing it so close to Speedweek. I would love to run up there, 500 ft elevation and 1.5 miles of pavement, but Bonneville is my main deal. Im sure there are lots of others like me, Bonneville first, but would like to run up there also.

"think about maybe not having it so close to Speedweek"
Fred,
I elaborated on this elsewhere on one of these threads on this forum.
The Maine  Inland Wildlife dept has designated the Upland Sandpiper, a bird that breeds on our former AFB, a threatened species, and as such we can not run an event before August. We had originally planned this for the end of June, until we were educated as to this situation.

I thought I remembered there was a reason but forgot,CRS. Of course it seems that Speedweek has been getting earlier and earlier. Used to be the third week in August, I think. My wifes b'day is Aug 16 and I am never there, on the salt. Speedweek is so early this year I may actually be home for her B'day. :-D

Hi Rich,
Regarding licensing, we'll evaluate everyone according to their vehicle and personal experience during the tech process. We wish to err on the side of safety on day one , even if some competitors feel comfortable in going faster than we do.
Being that our surface is initially concrete but predominantly asphalt, we also feel most racers will agree with us in feeling out the different tractions afforded in ascending speed runs. This applies to both the acceleration and Deceleration aspects.
We don't expect (?) attendance on the level of respected established venues like ECTA or The Salt, so  having at least two long days to run should afford all plenty opportunity to get used to the place and show what they got.
Bring it on....

I really want to go but I'm having a hard time making the money work.  I also need to upgrade my bike as well.  Even if I got someone to haul it for me, it would still be around a 1000 dollars with airfare and car rental, hotel and food.  That doesn't leave very much upgrading money for the Oct Mile.

Jim here, from MI - I'm pretty sure I'll be ready by then, hopefully after first getting my feet wet at Maxton in June.  I have two Maxton-type buddies that I'm trying to talk into going as well.  Anybody have any thoughts or comments about short-cutting across Canada with a trailer and racecar?

I expect you might find it a long wait to get through customs with a race trailer full of stuff.  Have you registrations for the bikes, and be ready to show that they're absolutely race-only -- not street-driveable.  Have a list of EVERYTHING in the trailer, including tools and tie-downs, so you can prove, on your way back into the US, that you didn't buy anything on which you'd have to pay a duty.  If you're carrying race fuel -- you may have to show something like an MSDS.  Carry sealed cans only, I'd guess.

Also -- if you've got any kind of nasty tickets on your driver license you may be refused entry.  For sure -- if you've got an alcohol-related offense anytime in the past 10 years (yes, TEN years) you will almost certainly be disallowed from entering Canada.

All of my comments are hearsay -- I haven't tried it personally. I betcha I'm not too far wrong, though.  Check it out with phone calls and/or emails before you try crossing.

Mostly for the benefit of those of you that aren't aware yet, this is the address   (below) for the Loring Timing Association and
information for our event to be held in August this year.We recommend  reading  all
the info available, and we hope it answers enough  questions.  Pre
Registrations can be submitted now, or if you are  unfamiliar with Land Speed Racing
, you can first order a Rulebook which has  most of what info  you need to
prepare to attend and run your vehicle.
We will soon also add a Aerial based map picture of the site to familiarize
everybody with the facility.
We will also add a News icon for regular updates on available
accommodations and dining facilities in the area.
Directions are also forthcoming .
In the meantime, have patience if we've forgotten anything or confused an
issue, we will straighten it all out very shortly.
We thank all of you that kept the faith waiting and watching our  progress.
We again  openly thank our Mentors at The ECTA for their ongoing  help ,
this probably could not have been done without them. And if it's a  failure,
blame them. LOL.

Thanks for the reply, SSS.  Sounds like not a good option for Real Street.  Much as I like Canadians, I recall that oftentimes hospitality only starts 100 yards beyond the border.  I'll try to contact customs anyway - I have a (reasonably) clean record and a good passport.

Hey Jim,
I just checked your location, I see why a beeline East to Buffalo, I assume, is a lot better than going way south. Good Luck. You'll probably get a few more opinions on this, there's a bunch of LSR types on both sides now.
I have to ask, due to your Screen name, is your vehicle of choice a P1800 ?
If so, what class ?

Hello, Bob - The screen name is from the old ice racing days, when weight was your friend.  Although I love my P1800 & 1800E on the highway, reality says go with an old 544 - same mechanicals and 500 lbs less weight.  One of my co-conspirators is stuffing a small Ford into an 1800, though - hopefully both cars will be running this year.
As far as crossing Canada, the savings in miles may not balnce the higher price of gas - more research needed on this.

"reality says go with an old 544 - same mechanicals and 500 lbs less weight.'
Yeah but, weight ain't no big thang in LSR, Aero is, and I bet The 1800 beats the 544 big time on that ?
Either way, I hope to see you and your gang in August, snow should be melted by then, even the six inches they had today.

Gary and Pam,
Your cars are certainly crowd pleasers, and we'd love to see them in August. Excuse me if you are familiar with Land Speed Racing and I don't have to remind you about our policy about making runs up in Loring. Basically if it is street legal and passes our tech, you can make runs up to 135 mph, just follow basic safety guidelines as outlined in our Rulebook. If you desire to run over 135, more safety equipment is necessary the faster your vehicles potential .

I am a huge wing car fan. I cant quite afford one right now. (70 RR, alpine white, 440-4, 4 speed is my dream car), I have seen your cars only in the mags, so it is going to be a real treat to see them in person (I know yours are what if type cars, but really cool, and ive read very well executed). Now I cant miss this event.

"even if it is 8 hours away."
To Loring from Taunton, Mass is 8 hours ?  I think you can do better than that. Once you get into Maine, I-95 and I-295 are fast roads, the only slow ride is from Houlton North , mostly 50-ish. I've been averaging around 6 hrs from the Caribou Inn leaving early in the morning, to the NH border, another 3-4 hours home here, just North of NYC, pulling a trailer. And I'm wingless. Just be prepared, fuel-wise, there aren't a lot of service stations the last few hundred miles of I-95. AND, don't practice for LSR on that seemingly open long road, there are Troopers lurking.

Bob:  You may have us confused with the 'parts supplier' I 'used' to be associated with.  Pam and I are the actual owners/builders of the 71 wingcars and others you see on the site.  It's a long story, but suffice it to say, we have left the negativity in our lives behind us. :-D  We look forward to enjoying the fruits of our labor at the LSR events.  We're about an hour or so to the MA/NH border.

Wheels777 ?

Andrew, I think we met at Maxton in April ??

I have the Satin Black 1933 Ford Victoria. I am also building a 1953 Stude to run in E/CGALT

Seems as If I recall you ran Classic Gas class on Saturday, then ran the Classic Gas "Altered" on Sunday.

What "alterations" did you do to be legal for Altered class on Sunday ?  I need to know as I too would like to be able to run both in the Classic class and the classic altered class with my new Stude ?

Hope I am not asking a secret question?

Thanks

We ran C/CBGALT on Saturday and C/CGALT on Sunday.  The ECTA run log shows C/CGC incorrectly.  The second run on Saturday in C/CBGALT has not been added to the record list at 151.7968.  ECTA is aware and will post at a later date.

Charles, I have run both altered and classic altered before going to efi without any changes. The rules states that if you run classic class you have to remain in the class all the rest of the racing season.

GH,, I agree

What I was referring to was running in Classic  then going to Classic "Altered"  with the same car ???

If your car has the "alterations" to make it fit into the "altered class"  then It can't fit in the regular coupe or "unaltered clss".. vice versa ,,, if you have a CGC  car and then run " CGALT  you must have at least one of the listed "alterations" ??

Just wondering,, as I want to be able to run my new Stude in as many classes as I can,, but since I will start as CGALT... I must stay in Classic all of that race season ?   But how do you go from Altered to CGC with same car ?

Stan the E motor has gone over 140...Saving the E for the Stude,,, making good progress,,, If I just had an envelope with $15,000 to $20,000 in it I could get the Stude done for Loring.  Now we have 90% of the big parts here,,, just need the cash to finish !!!  I am sure that is a very common problem on most every build.

Lack of cash or funding seems to be a common reason that builds slow down and get behind schedule.

I'd just like to reiterate how the LTA would really appreciate if more entrants would pre register. It would help us gauge attendance so we would not be caught short on porta potties . Seriouslier, we really need to get the best idea possible, for volunteer recruiting, security issues, and all that non-racing stuff that has to be done.
The more stuff that's pretty-well planned for gives us more time to ourselves to maybe even race our own cars, which was the original point of this venture.
You save $25, get a head start on paperwork and tech, and endear yourselves to  the people working the registration center ( card table ? )
The only idea we have at this time is the thread on this list and the ones reserved rooms at the CARIBOU INN. (remember, mention the LTA racers discount when you call)

Thank You

Question - will the trailers stay at the site or have to be hauled each day?  If they stay, will there be folks staying overnight at the location?

Dear Wheels, ( I feel like Dear Abby,)
We'll be up there the 27/28 , will hopefully get a favorable decision on that. The Base powers-that-be initially asked that the place be unoccupied overnight for the benefit of the security of the businesses that are adjacent to our site. I hope they'll understand what a difficulty it would be to move everything off and on every night.
In reality, there'd be more security with our group on base than off, is our point.
As the State Police will also be present this month, ideally there'd be some of them also attending our meet as fellow LSR enthusiasts.
I'll let you know where we stand when we return.
I'm sure we'll come up with something to your satisfaction.

Dear Glen,
So far this site has been without HIS input, don't make it a challenge. As it's an Ex-Airfield, I'm sure there'd be lots of historical cuttage and pastage spewed.
The Loring Development Authority did OK daily fly-ins-outs for spectators, just give us advance warning as we don't want planes downed by Hayabusas. (Birds)
Wheels !
I can't guarantee this 100%, but I feel confidant we'll have the trailers in a secure site.

Check out page one of this topic. There's like over ten cars committed to coming , plus BobbyHotRods '29 T-Bucket, Mark S ' IMPAC Turbo Porsche, and a lot of guys that are sitting on the fence that I've talked to are leaning towards coming.
More than likely a majority of Bikes, but nowadays in LSR that's normal .
Judging by the upward trend  in hits on these forums, there's a LOT of lurkers.

Bob, I was just kidding.  Hey, I have read every post on this forum!

I can sure understand the huge number of bikes though.  I used to race them myself until I got too old.  Still think about it now and then but my wife and my doc both look at me real squinty-eyed whenever I mention it, so I figure I'll just stick with the car from here on out. In fact, the doc just shakes his head when we talk about it.  He says guys on medicare should be content with reading about racing.

I hope some of those lurkers and fence-sitters show up.  The only differrence between dreamers and doers is that the doers just get out there and live their dreams.

All I got left to do is bleed the brakes and change out my ignition box and the car is ready to head your way!

As Mike said we will be attending in July, everything is looking good, we're going todo some messing with gear changes, the 190.5 in the mile was a little lower than we anticipated, but the tune was spot on, so hopefully I can move the gearing in relationship to the power band around and pick up some mph.  We need to be at 195 in the mile to do what we need to do in 1.5  So to update the list that is greenjunk and mikematy, 1971 "TimeBomb" Camaro.  N.Carolina.

Fred,

Why miss it?  There's more than enough time to drive from Wendover to Loring.  In fact, there's enough time to pass back through Texas for a good burrito and juevos rancheros breakfast!  LoL

HI Dick, I guess it would be doable, but very expensive. I have committed to two meets at Bonneville this year and thats about all I can afford, time and money. Speedweek is necessary/mandatory in my mind. The salt is my first love in LSR, everything else comes after Bonneville. Like I said, maybe next year for Loring. 11/2 miles of pavement with lots of shut down, thats exciting.

Count Me In!  Ninja 500  P/P 500-4

I am planning on Production Class but may also run naked in Modified if time allows.  That is assuming class changes will run like Maxton.  Driving my  Miata, G/GSS, up and running it is my back-up plan though if gas prices go through the roof.

FYI - The Caribou is down to rooms with 1 full size bed so book soon!

I called the Caribou, Milton is Correct. They have 6 rms left, one bed each.
According  to the desk reservist person, our LTA group has reserved 60 rooms out of the 70 they have. I hope everyone interested in coming has heeded my advice.
We are still researching other options, both camping and indoors, will post immediately what we found.

Hello, Ted, and welcome to the landracing.com Forum.  I'm glad to hear you'll be at the Loring event -- and bummed that Nancy and I won't be there.  We have to leave home that same weekend for the drive out to Bonneville.

I'm hearing more and more good things about the Loring to-do, and wish everyone a fine time -- with safe riding, lots of fun, and great/high speeds.

Best wishes from Skandia, Michigan.

Thank You for all that. Enjoy porta potties and Sun Screen at The Event in LSR.
Seriously, one day at a time, I know we'll see Jon and Nancy in Maine next year.
Hopefully the  dates will be more conducive than this year for attendance at both places.

I'm Tony, I'll be there as a volunteer...  bringin' the pit truck, tools etc..  too slow to compete! :-D

I'll probably camp a couple days, then hit a hotel when it gets to the point where either I can't stand my own smell, or the mosquitos start looking & acting like teradactyls.

Look for the green '56 chebbie truck...

I'll probably also be taking a bunch of pics for Bangshift.com, as Brian has a previous engagement (the wuss has a wedding he couldn't macho-talk his way out of).

Flag me down, we'll yak motor stuff!

Yup -- we do not plan to be at Loring, dodge it.  We were certainly interested, if for no other reason than to be a part of Bob Wanner's dream.  But out volunteer duties at Bonneville call for us to leave home Friday the 31st -- to get to the Salt in time to set up piorta-potties and such.  Bob has promised us, though, that we will be welcome at future Loring events -- as long as I stop attaching stories about moose.

Right now we're on I-77 in western Virginia, headed to Laurinburg and tomorrow -- the race track. Ho-boy, here we go!

Jon Wennerberg is THE MAN in LSR, nobody contributes as much as him and  Nancy.
Nobody travels more to all the events , does more when they get there, and asks nothing for their effort. And he runs this website, Say no more, I nominate them for LSR Volunteers of at least the Decade.
Or maybe he just likes to play with Poop, hang out with Turk, spread the word about "Patries",or drive thousands of miles to get away from Upper  Michigan ?
I'll miss you guys on day one in Loring, with you two it would've been 100% perfect.

After four months on jacks while going through the checklist of changes since Texas Mile in March, the 'bird now has four tires back on, is off the jacks and on the ground, and the motor has been started and cob-webs blown out of the headers!  A wash job and loading on the trailer comes next.  Life is good!

That 'bird sure sounded good.  I wonder how long the drive from Texas to Maine would be if I just didn't bother with the truck and trailer.  Hmmm.

Well, well -- lookie who's finally decided to join up in this Forum.  Thomas, it's good to see you on here.  For those of you that have good memories -- Thomas was racing at Maxton as a young teen when Nancy and I got going there -- and grew with the sport.  He got a ride out to Bonneville for SpeedWeek about 6 years ago, and he bunked with Nancy and me (and then with some others, too) and rode back to North Carolina with us.  That was his first visit to Bville.  We've kept in close touch with Thomas and his family over the years, and seeing him posting here -- is just dandy.  Be nice to him -- or he'll ride your bike about 5% faster than it's ever gone before.  We've had him do that on our bikes, we've seen him do it on other people's bikes.

Welcome, Thomas.

Thomas Cronan,, any relation to a Tom Cronan?  He would be around 47 to 52 years old by now.. back in the early to mid 1980's I drag raced bikes on the 1/4 mile tracks (Rockingham, Fayetteville and Kinston NC) and came up against this Honda rider named Tom Cronan ?  I was riding Suzuki's back then !!

Just wondering.
