Title: Introducing the 1993 Street Rod Probe...
Post by: pw_cc_runner on February 24, 2009, 11:00:58 PM
My casual talk about joining the 200-MPH Club got a lot more serious this month when it got published in HOT ROD Magazine. My car started out as a quick fixer up and got blown completely out of proportion. As of right now it only has appearance modifications, but it is time to give the car some muscle to go with the look.

My Cardomain.com page chronicles the entire three years process of customizing and painting the car:

My plan is to skin the cars body onto the 03/04 Cobra Mustang Chassis. Ideally I want to use the 03/04 cast iron DOHC 4.6L S/C but I am open to the 99/01 Cobra aluminum DOHC 4.6L N/. I have heard the the gearing in the Cobra's Tremec T-56 is not as tall as the Viper's T-56, but that they are interchangeable. I just purchased the independent rear suspension from the Cobra too. This is the first time I have put these thoughts into words and I am just using this as a starting point. I am looking for any input, thoughts, or ideas...

Josh

P.S. This is the article from HOT ROD if you did not catch it in the APRIL 09 issue...

You'll have to lose all the foo-foo body parts.

Is it not feasible to do it with the body kit? It's well reinforced, this is NOT your typical tuner body it screwed on with decking screws. I can understand the wing for sure and the aerodynamic issues because the front is pretty wide.

When you get the rule book you'll find the rules to fit in a class are pretty specific. Modifications like you're envisioning will put you up against some very serious tube framed cars. Meeting the safety rules might be tough.

The 200 club isn't just reaching 200 mph. To get in that club you have to set a new record above 200 mph which in many cases can be in the high 200's.

Get the rule book and study it carefully, then pick a class.

Good luck. Many on this forum will offer helpful advise.

The body pieces will cause too much aero drag and maybe upset the CP/CG relationship.

Each class is very specific as to what body mods are allowed.

Cool car however if you only want a 200 "cert" you may want to run at Texas as they do not have any records to speak of.

They do remember the fastest car and bike however..

Josh,

If your goal is to gain Bonneville 200MPH Club membership here are some classes and speeds you will have to best:
D/FAlt 222
D/GAlt 229
D/GC   222

The body class will determine the amount of mods you may do. The 4.6 liter Ford puts you near the bottom of engine class D.

John's suggestion of running at the Texas mile at 200MPH may be you best bet. I think they have a 200MPH club, not running there myself I am not sure. Anybody?

I'm a little disgusted... turns out the guy who "sold" me the IRS got a higher offer and took it without giving me a second shot. So no IRS  :-(

Thats Ok, a standard rear axle is better for running the salt.

Yes Texas has their own "Two" club for any vehicle that runs 200.000 mph or faster and they do not keep records other than the fastest car or bike.
