We got the card from Cyndia, Terry -- and yes, we'll be at the April event.  I booked our room at the Crack Whore Motel today -- so that's covered for now.

This is gonna be fun -- it's been months since we attended an L S R meet.

Can you guys recommened any other hotels to stay at or stay away from.

The last page of the rule book has a listing of all the local hotels/motels/flea traps.  If you don't have a rule book, I would recommend Hampton Inn (910) 277-1516 or the Holiday Inn Express (888) 303-1753.  Pine Acres is a little more "rustic" and usually books up quickly with the ECTA regulars.  Plenty of ECTA people at the other hotels listed above.  You may want to avoid The Clinton Inn and the Scotland Inn.  Also, plenty of good food and bench racing at the mexican restaurant and Jerrys.

Good luck,
Tom S
#169, 699, 724 (and 619 if I ever get a good case settled).

another place to stay is the Comfort Inn +1.910.277.7788

I always see Maxton folks in the morning at the breakfast line.

Tom, I'll debate your concerns about the Clinton.  We
ve stayed there three or four times and have not had any difficulties.  I'll admit that other folks have experienced bad things -- but we have not.  One thing I've done is to ALWAYS request a room on the back end of the hotel..  That way we avoid most of the traffic and the parking lot parties.

It's not as bad as some folks think.  If you have had your own horror story there -- well, I apologize for messing around with your statement.

We're at the Pine Acres this time.  A good reason to choose it is because there is often a party on the lawn after Saturday racing ends--sometimes a bar-b-que banquet.  We'll have the BBQ this time -- but at the College, not the lawn.

I have stayed at most of the hotels.  The Clinton is a little shall we say rustic.  It is an old hotel.  The sheets and tub were clean.  The carpet had been vacuumed, when the carpet was last cleaned was probably around 1980.  We just wore shoes or shower shoes in the room. The noise was not too bad - heck I think the racers were the louder than the other guests.  LOL - Jon is right, get a room facing the parking lot towards the back.

The rear facing area of the Clinton Inn is not reqularly used. It is only opened when "the racers" are in town. You are correct that "the racers" use the rear lot for bench racing meetings and beer consumption. You meet the nicest people there. Bikes/cars/crew, no class distinctions. Pine Acres books out first as it is the ECTA HQ on race weekends. Both have a nice pool.

just stay away from the Scotland Inn... Only thing missing from last time I was there was the "chalk outline" of the last victim ????

I stayed last two times at Jameson Inn,,, and it was nice and across the side street from the best bbq and chicken joint around...

All this talk of parking lot parties almost has me wishing I didn't move the rv south with the plan to stay at the track.  Hopefully there will be the usual crowd staying there though I will still be tempted to hit the bbq.

The Scotland Inn was an alright place...in 1978. If they can pass tech, there are cockroaches the size of my sneaker-took two strikes to kill one the LAST time I stayed there. The Clinton is great after a season at the Scotland. Decision to open the back section is apparently not made until a couple of weeks before the meets. They'll put a note on your reservation and never read it again - still like it though. See y'all in April.

We've stayed at the Pine Acres most of the times we've been there, with our first-ever visit -- way back in the day -- at the Scotland.  I agree with most of the negative comments about it -- although back in those days I was pretty busy drinking and didn't notice much.  But that's another story.

Anyway, Nancy and I have stayed at the Clinton maybe four times - and have requested a back room each time.  We request it as I'm checking in (rather than when I call for the reservation).  We've never stayed in any room but one in the back.  It's usually pretty empty back there, with maybe a half-dozen customers (mostly racers).

Take slippers or beach shoes or something, just in case.  Oh - the morning coffee is often just one pot, often empty when you get to it, and often you get a dirty look from an employee when you ask for a refill.  But what the heck -- it's a great display of Southern hospitality.  Or is that Southern Hostility?

Clinton Inn only opens the rooms that face the rear parking lot when, as the check in clerk put it, "the racers are in town".  Just about everyone in the back area are "racers". When you book ask for ECTA rate ... not sure if it makes a difference but it will put you in the back ... I believe it is because most come with trailers and it is easier to park them in the rear.  JD

Hey it/s my G/GSS running mate.  Didn't know you frequented these parts.  Actually not sure yet if I am running the car, bike or just volunteering at the April meet.  The car had 4 down hitch brackets added up gront and a hitch out back to tow the bike so it should theoretically be slower until the engine gets some attention.  I am still a few days away from see how it does towing the bike.

The customization of the 4x6 utility trailer for the bike is still ongoing but it is usable already.  Looks like tongue weight was up around 150 lbs which may be high for the miata.

As for the bike, all the safety gear is.  I added 160 miles today to bring the total to 200 and with a good forecast hopefully will hit 500+ by the end of the weekend.  Trying to get a 1k break-in before running the mile.  Stilll basically guessing at how much needs to be safety wired but hope to have the front axle/fork and oil drain/fill plugs done prior to the meet.  Broke in the race boots and gloves today but 1/2 day in those race boots wasn't much fun.  Doubt I will get to break in the suit on the street unless I wear it from that point until I get help getting it off of me.

One of our 2008 ZX14R bikes had all of 190 miles on it when it first ran at Bonneville last summer.  During the event we rolled another 30 or so miles on it - and top speed never varied much from that "break-in".  The bike went anywhere from 185 to 188.  We'll see what a winter of sitting idle - except for maybe some dyno time - has done for it.  It ran a 179 at Maxton last October -- we'll see if that's changed only FOUR WEEKS FROM TODAY!!!

Anyway -- I didn't worry about breaking in the bike on the long course -- wonder if I should have been concerned...

That gives me a touch over 500 miles on her.  I am taking her up around 7k rpm now and got to see how she feels around 85mph briefly on the Maryland Superspeedway (I-68   :-o )  I will try to get a few more hundred miles in keeping her at 7K and below and change the oil and filter before prior to bringing her down to Maxton.  May see if I can get a little safety wiring done tomorrow  unless I hit the road again.  My but may not be up to another long ride.  Ledft the Puma boots home this time so no tired feet.

Good lookin RV set-up there John, is the Blue-Bird group gonna be there again this April?

Thanks, that is the old Budweiser promotion bus, that used to be at a lot of the NASCAR races, Super Bowls and other pro football games etc.. check out http://www.pbase.com/image/24977457 (http://www.pbase.com/image/24977457) it took a lot of work to get that BAR smell out of it

Yes, we will be there down in the high rent district by short shutdown, we have spent a great deal of time cleaning up that area, as it had a lot of nails, screws and other debris, plus lot of weeds, so that we can get everybody that comes parked on pavement, we were very concerned when it started raining in the old spot last April, these 'Birds as we like to call them are very heavy and we were fortunate that nobody got stuck. This will also give back the old area that we were using for an active pit area, to those that need it.

So far we have 15 'Birds signed up, but we will probably have 20 when the time comes. We try to stir up interest on our Wanderlodge Owners Group Forum http://www.wanderlodgeownersgroup.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2476 (http://www.wanderlodgeownersgroup.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2476) and this seems to help, but with the economy the way it is we aren't expecting much more. We also have our Myrtle Beach Rally the weekend before and expect some of those people to also be at Maxton. Our plan is to come from Myrtle Beach on Wednesday afternoon up to Maxton, so that we can clean up our area some more and then we are going to trim back the branches and weed that line the entrance road, to make it easier to get in and out of, we did this two, or three years ago and it needs it again, plus if we are asked Randy Dupree (#846 F/BGCC Dupree Racing) http://www.pbase.com/iamflagman/image/58688899 (http://www.pbase.com/iamflagman/image/58688899) and some of the group will probably do the stock class car tech, like they have done in the past.

We will again have volunteers man & woman the chalkboard with the speeds displayed at the short shutdown area on the return road, that is as long as we can keep people doing that chore

If any you happen to be down in our HOOD, please feel free to drop in and sit for a while we always have good campfire going at night weather permitting and we are just regular folks, if you looked at our forum you notice that all of our members maintain and repair their coaches themselves and we are all gearheads of one type or another and you don't have to own a 'Bird to join our group, we will just refer to you as a S.O.B. owner (some other brand)

John:

I'm in the process of cleaning out the attic -- and I found a sign-thingie that might work for displaying speeds (alternate to the chalkboard).  It's yours if you'd like it.

White digits on blue plastic, each plastic about a foot tall, and the numbers fit in a slotted wooden piece which has foam "feet".  It was used for displaying the price of used cars in a car lot.  I don't know how many of each number there is -- but what the heck, it might be a help for you.  Thanks for doing the run speeds for the racers - no matter how you do the display.  We all appreciate it (unless I'm running for a record and my speed is a few hundredths too low).

For a small donation, I can arrange to have them UP THE SPEED a little, so that it will make you happy when you ride by, but then the REST OF THE STORY will await you down the road a piece

Bring the "sign-thingie" with you and I'll leave it up to whoever is volunteering to do that to make the decision on what they want to use, I don't want to look a gift horse in the mouth you know

We will also be policing the people in our group that ride bicycles.

Darn it!! I was really hoping that my wife could come to this event, but her guard unit wont let her off for that weekend. I was hoping to get her into this racing as she seems like she would do this. She will be getting a little Kawasaki 250R. Maybe next meet I will have her with me. She weighs all but 105, so she would be a great jockey.

Luckily my brother is able to get leave and come down with me. Atleast it wont be a boring drive down by myself now.

on big twins the adjuster can be taken apart and reversed for clearance issues.

SW262- there is a self adjuster that is made for Sportster/Buell engines ... it is self tensioning with soft spring to keep the primary chain in adjustment. No protruding bolts ... problem is it doesn't like strong downshifts and neither do I ... should solve the problem.

Got the bike buttoned up and started last night, sounds good. I took the advice of Kent and John et al and mounted the intercooler reservoir tank on the swingarm, instead of ahead of the steering head. It was a bitch to plumb, but it's working better than I expected. With the large size, I can fill it 3/4 full and it has plenty of volume to keep the pump pickup covered. With ice in it, I imagine I will pick up a few ponies. I'll make a dry pass as a baseline, load the 20% secondary injector map, fill up the tank, and see what happens. If'n the creek don't rise and such. -Dean

Stainless, I have been mowing for three weeks here in St. George. Pine mountain is turning green and it's 74 degrees right now clear sky's. Enjoy the sun when it passes by Colorado.

Eric-- Tail wind at the track would be from the south. Hope everybody can stand the low 70's!

I'm seeing nice Friday, but with a chance of showers.  Very nice Saturday -- Upper 70s, few clouds.  Not quite but almost as nice Sunday, with some clouds and temps in the mid 70s.  We're taking an umbrella and an E-Z Up, but not the rubber boots.

I should be camped out in Sleepy Bear's in Lumberton tomorrow night then will figure out how to relocate two vehicles and a trailer Thursday am to the track.  I will probably run the jeep over drop the trailer then come back and tow the jeep in behind the rv.  I don't think the cops would appreciate me towing the jeep and the bike trailer behind the rv at the same time!

It has been a busy week. Got done safety wiring the bike (I have 5 feet of space between my Duster and the garage wall to work on the bike!!). I dont have a safety wire plier, so had to crew chief it and hand wire it all. I hope tech isnt stiff on how its attached. A few of the hose clamps didnt have anything close to wire to so they got wired to themselves or the hose clamp next to it. I also wired the caps to the reseviors. I am curious if my lowering links have to have the jam nuts wired, bringing the drill and bits just in case.

My fingers are crossed for my suit, I had Amanda at Speedsport turn a 2 piece into a 1 piece, and replace all of the strech panels with leather. The suit still has the pockets on the front and the vent inlets on the shoulders (hard plastic double stiched into the leather.)

It has been an adventure up to this point, and the fun is about the start, I cant wait for all of this hard work to pay off.

Borrowed a buddies blazer and trailer, will be packing up tomorrow morning and hitting the road. See you on the road for whoever is taking I-95 down from Dirty Jersey.
