Title: Amo-Steele Liner
Post by: landracing on October 12, 2008, 01:49:26 PM
Well we have had alot on inquiries on our new liner. So ill start a post and post some pictures of the current state, our todo list is growing and I see a long winter to figure everything out on it.
Currently it is powered by a fuel injected 180" Buick V6 on gas. Eventually it will be turbo motor to run in the 3 liter class.

Scott, it was for sale on this site several months ago.  Originally built by Nick Mays, last raced in 2003.  We don't have a lot of the original build info, but we are in the process of developing electrical and mechanical diagrams for the car.  It is nicely constructed and well thought out, looks to have the best of everything.

Was this sold without motor?
I see in the pics that it looks like the motor is getting ready to be pulled.
The reason I ask is because that V6 is a fine motor, just wonder why you would want to change a working combination.

BTW:

Very jealous.
Title: Re: Amo-Steele Liner
Post by: landracing on October 13, 2008, 04:33:21 PM
That motor combination was never ran. However it is a Stage II 180" v6 motor fuel injected. It was built by a fellow at Buick I believe. It was put together with the best of everything. We just don't know what "Everything" is. It was dyno tested with a FAST system and ready to run. It is a special motor. However the motor has been sitting in the liner for about 4 years. The motor is coming out due to some oil leaks that I have to locate and fix. Pull heads and see what we got. That will happen as early as this weekend.

I got the chance to drop over to Jon's yesterday and see the new liner up close and personal!

Wow ---  Congratulations guys, first class build quality on this one. You've got a really fine starting point there and if it runs any where near as good as the build quality looks, you should be in for some good times out on the salt flats.

Very nice design work and attention to detail, I am looking forward to seeing her run after you finish the shakedown process and get to see what the good motor will do compared to that mule motor they ran it with.

Yes the drivers compartment is big enough that even a big guy could fit in there from the looks of it.
I think driver seat inserts are on the list to fit it to most any driver.

Well kids, last Sunday Jon and I did a little work on the liner, checking out the motor and figuring out the B and J tranny.  Monday we got a new set of plugs out of the trailer, threw them in and we were ready to start it... so we fired it up about midnight  :-o  After the shutdown, we discussed that we should have videoed it... I left town to come back to Wichita Tuesday, and Jon fired it up for video and to do a little data logging.

See the video here

We spent several days working on the car and trailer this weekend.  Instead of putting 2 x 4s on the pedals for Jon and cutting a couple of inches out of my legs, we figured a way to move the pedals forward 2 inches for Jon and back 2 for me.

We also worked up a plan for lateral restraint, the secondary scatter shield to protect all the fuel lines from our SFI Bellhousing, reworked the battery installation for better access, fixed a couple of trailer tires, checked the trailer bearings, axles and brakes, got the trailer VIN inspected and celebrated Jons birthday.

Sorry, no blow by blow on this fight, we know it runs from the video, hope to throw it on the dyno in June the next time I go out.  MSA built a couple of wheel adaptors for that purpose.  It is entered for speedweek... and we also are changing the number since 41 was taken already... have that started also...
we will be 1411, Amo Steele Streamliner Racing

Post by: landracing on May 27, 2009, 08:58:30 PM
Well hell Stainless about summed it up in a nutshell... He came in Last Wednesday night for my birthday BBQ.... The next morning after three attempts to get me out of bed to go work on the car he gave up... I was up from 3 am to 9 am working on my AB workout... This is the type of workout that you cant say no too... Dry Heaving every 15 minutes for 6 hours straight.. My pregnant wife was not to happy about that....

Stainless has been working on some little details of the car like he had mentioned... Working on new lettering for the car, had to carve away some of the dash to accomodate stainless and get the pedals fully adjustable... So that meant getting a new clutch master, changing config of the pedals, and adjustable, throttle linkage... Flushed out cooling system, new battery box and also head restraint system. Trailer needed some small work like just taking everything apart and servicing... Found some broken stuff in the brakes on the trailer...

Stainless brought out our Tow Rig a 99 Dodge 3500 5.9 diesel... While he was here he was hot rodding it and blew out the clutch in it, so today I got to put on in... He flew home yesterday to kansas.

So now is just more planning for the next trip out next month to get it all finished, put on the dyno (MSA made some nice adapters to get it on a dyno without removing the engine), get chassis back in the body etc etc.

Fun stuff...

What a joy to see u posting again, Jon.

Strong AB's are important for the next party.

Welcome back.

I have compassion for Keilani.

You people are still on my Christmas card list. I had the envelopes addressed and the letters and foto stuffed but the increase in

postage threw me a curve. If Stainless returns before Speed Week I'll put his name on your envelope and that will handle two

families with one stamp, unless it pushes it  overweight. If there is postage due, take your letter out and return Stainless' letter.

He can read yours. That will make our Stimulus Check go farther.

Yeah she is. She was sapposed to be one of the drivers at Speedweek, but we got a little hickup since that plan... We call him Alien BOB for right now... We find out the she or he thing in a week. I Told here she should still do it anyways.. Get some media hype 7 months prego and racing cars,, would that mean "Alien BOB" could get a red hat at the same time????

Now onto the hub adapters. Since we don't know the power output of the engine for sure, We found a loaded dyno to get the streamliner on without having to pull the motor. But their adapters were not big enough to fit on the 5 bolt 7" bolt pattern. So Stainless went to work on designing some adapters to bolt on and make it a more acceptable pattern for the dyno guys. so here they are.

When we are at dinner table both Keilani and I are chopped liver and Stainless has one dog on each side of him, swarming like a pack of sharks... They know who the sucker is...

Jon, the explanation of your new arrival's naming is kinda like Bonneville pickup racer Jim Price's statement to (now the late) Ed Rannberg and myself YEARS ago.

"We named our daughter Sandy, after Little Orphan Annie's dog!

Congratulations, DAD. (Mom, too - she did the hard work).

If you name the baby Bob, at least spell it back-ward to differentiate from the other Bobs.

Before my little girl was born, my stepdaughter was three years old and pointed to my then-wife's belly and said "Emily Bob Car-Keys."  Well, we tried to tell her that Bob was a boys name and that this was here sister, not brother.  The name suck, and Emily Rose (Bob) Calkins was joyfully born.

I think my BOB is an alien sometimes!

We had some tube left over so also made a secondary protection tube for the fuel line as it passes the bellhousing

Also installed some steel plate over the top to protect those lines

Johnboy milled out a couple of 1/4 inch steel wheel mounting plates for our Aluminum fronts.

Jon tried to call Lee Kennedy Sunday to get a reading on the rules for lugnuts when you use the plate.
Sure hope we don't have to make those later.....

Been awhile since last posted on this thread.

We have been busy redo'ing some components of liner.

We started by changing the steering system - Went from a panard arm front steering to a rack and pinion.

Here is the old setup

Work weekend... Another item we had to have made was a new gear set for the liner. There was a 1.5:1 ratio and just was to much gear for where we are at now, so we had a 2.0:1 gear set made. Here we are setting up for install back in the box.

OK, here is a little run down, we shucked #2 rod, killed he crank at WoS, been working the parts collection and repairs.  The sleeves for 1 and 2 in the block were damaged, the block is at Jerry Wilson's shop here in Wichita, http://www.chet-wilson.com/ .  So far I have a new crank, the rods were 7 inch and possibly way to rare to find more, Carrillo will make more for huge $$$, however, that length rod is not really necessary and may actually be costing a little torque.  Amazing what a lot of internet research and talking to a couple of professional racing engine builders can discover.  The guy that had the crank also had some more common 6.65 inch rods.  I'll get a few pictures up

BTW thanks to Tony and Tom for parts leads, we are still collecting.   There may be a few more direction changes in store but that info will be available later if it happens.

Stainless,
From the looks of the rod where the big end used to be, it looks like it welded itself to the crank and then broke off. Do you see the problem as an oil/lub system problem or an assembly problem??

Definately looks like it got hot down there by the discoloration.

I'd been wondering too, I heard some rumours from someone who was there and posted on another build diary we have asking if I knew of you guys ...by the brevity of the reply, I get the sense it wasn't a planned budget item.

Keep us up to date when the weather improves.

Yes, we were able to throw the car on the dyno the day before we left for WoS, had a minor problem with the Cam drive gear bolt, caused the engine to ingest a little water, took it back and cleaned out the oil system got it all back together and left.  My guess is that we probably started something in the bottom end.  Oil pressure was always 60+.
Our pistons all clayed well, but something is a little different at 8000 RPM, our shake down pass at half throttle for 3 gears seemed to go well.  The next pass was to see if we could qualify the car.  Just after the shift to 3rd at 8500 I heard a noise and shut it off.  Now we all know what that was.  Looking at the pistons they all were a little close to the side of the chamber.

who did you have make the 2.00 gears

Thanks
Steve

Our rear end is a Hub City 1050 gear box, it had a 1.5 set in it and that was geared a little high for NA 3 liter.  We ordered the 2.0 from them, the gears were Aero.  They make 1:1 if you need to go 500.

Yea Doc, I owed ya some pictures, these were definitely not a planned requirement.  I will post a few more carnage shots before we start to build.  There are a few other issues with the motor that we are working out.  You may have noticed the chamber was 4.01 wide, might be a little large for our bore.
It will take a little work, and a lot of reading about Buick 6's, but we will give it another shot.
