Title: Gas just topped $5.25 per gal in NC
Post by: Cajun Kid on September 12, 2008, 03:42:54 PM
My gosh, The gas stations all have 100's of cars in line for gas.  My son waited in line for 55 minutes to get gas at 4.19 per gallon this morning (but at 8:00am , I apssed the same station with no line and gas a 3.58) Now it is at over $5.25 and lines are 1/2 mile long and sign says 10 gallon limit.

I did check and Race gas did not go up and they said no plans to raise it.

Just my observation, it is  easy to blame the storm, but the strom can not take the entre blame, it at best just the excuse to raise prices, the stupid public that panics fills up every car and gas can they have, standing in line for hours creates a frenzy and this reduces supply and the greedy oil companies and fuel depots react and raise prices, then the higher the price goes the rumors abput no gas start, then more people line up and pay higher prices, it is out of control snowball gathering more speed and size as it goes down the mountain.

Oh well I will get off my soapbox now.. need to change trans pan gasket, put SFI roll bar padding in and then sweep the shop.

See ya.

No way Charles, get back up on that soap box !    Crude oil barrel prices are down to just over 100$ from highs of over 130 last month, but we sure didnt see the gas pump prices go down as fast as they went up as the barrel prices were going up. I blame the stock market and commodities speculators for gouging us.  I think its Un American.    :-o

Jimbo, I agree, let me un sheath my trusty sword and get back on my soap box.

If you boil it down it is greed and ignorance.

Greed by the oil producers, greed by the importers, greed by the wholesalers, greed by the market makers, greed by the speculative investors, greed by the capital markets. Just plain ole GREED..

Ignornace by the buying public, you see when gas shot over $4,00 a gallon and oil at all time highs, it finally hit home and folks drove less, hmm the demand went down and supply went up, then we saw oil prices drop at a decent pace, gas however did drop but much slower pace.

Now oil is 33% lower and gas jumped up 40 to 50% in one day, you know it will take it months to get back down now, it is a historic first for it to top $5.00 per gallon ( I think  it has never topped $5 around here). So are we conditioned to high gas prices ? have they beat us into submission just to pay these unfair prices.

If only today when the prices started to rise, we had all just said NO and nobody bought gas, heck it is the weekend approching, if NO ONE (except those who make a living over the road) would buy gas (I mean any gas) stay home enjoy the family, work on your cars, do anything, but stay home and refuse to submit to this crap..dont buy any gas,,, that message would get across, then we could slowly turn the tide.

Yes the storm is real and visable threat, but under the surface the bigger threat is our own politicians, oil companys, commodity investors and foriegn suppliers.

Let's jack up the price of our CORN and WHEAT exports and see what Happens ?

Food for Oil 1 to 1 trade I say.....

Ok, enough, going back under the car.

They need to restrict speculation.  It's basically gambling except the house doesn't have the odds, and the consumer pays the pot.

Moving money from one pile to another is highly profitable, but accomplishes nothing for our country and generates false wealth and inflation.

Basically, make it so that if you want to "buy" oil futures, you must take physical delivery.  Suddenly the price at the pumps will fall.

You might just be at the wrong gas station.

According to GasBuddy.com the high end for Winston-Salem is $5.69, but at the low end 15 stations were below $3.53. All prices were from today.

In case you want to run over to Whit's Convenience in Lilesville, he's getting $7.49

McRat, I agree but it does not seem possible that we can ever stop futures trading.

However, we can refuse to buy gas for a weekend.. Just imagine how much money would be taken off the table if even 75% of the US Households refused to buy gas for 2 to 2 1/2 days ?

Yeah I know, some will say yes but come Monday they would all have to fill up, or they would fill up on Thursday.

Yes, but part two is go ahead and fill up on Thursday evening of Friday morning, the STAY HOME for the weekend, do not use the gas you bought, see that gas was saved, it is still in your tank, then when MOnday comes and the new work week begins you can go another 3 to 6 days before you need gas again (depends on your commute, MPG etc) but you get the point, could be 5 to 9 day spread from the time you last bought gas,  now think about that.

It would have to have an effect, even if it just made the point that 75% of us ain't ging to take any crap and pulled together for just one weekend.. man what a signal ??

Plus, I would still jack up Corn and Wheat export prices to the countries that export oil to us. Then at least we have a commodity to bargin with... But that fact is our politicians all have a common illness (NO SPINE)

Ok, back to work...

Dean, before lunch hour some stations still had gas at less than $4.00, but as word got out and lines got longer, prices started rising. I just spoke to a guy at the fuel depot and he said it would not suprise him if Gas got to $6.00 per gallon by noon tomorrow if this frantic demand and insane pump panic keeps up.  Each time a tanker rolls out the price is at least 50 cents more per gallon than the prior one.

Most stations now have NO REGULAR and are only selling Mid Grade and Premium. Most are stopping the pumps at 10 gallons.

A few stations closed this morning with FULL Tanks when gas was  arounf $3.55 a gallon, just to re open this afternoon  when gas went over $5.00 (talk about a profit margin, those stations paid less than $3.45 per gallon and now are selling in for over $2.00 per gallon pure profit.  I know it is only for the few 1000 gallons thay had in the tanks, but ya know, hope they sleep well,,,...

McRat, I agree but it does not seem possible that we can ever stop futures trading.

...

They would require proof-of-delivery prior to making another purchase.  Better yet, make the transaction taxable, and they get reimbursed if they take delivery.  Sales tax on a commodity would REALLY cut the purse strings of the day traders.

I'm not even sure commodity markets are as necessary as they once were.  "Just In Time" manufacturing and sales, internet transactions 24hrs a day worldwide, and more business activity might have made commodity markets an unnecessary mechanism today, being held in place only by the greed of the controlling financial institutions.

I am not one to brag but I don't have a car.I have sold everything to go landracing. I ride my race bike as daily transportation. . This week I had to put all the race stuff on the bike to get ready for September. And I had to drain the tank . My scooter is full of gas and my extra gas can is full. I filled up the mower and still have half a tank in the race bike.
I don't know what to do with all the extra gas.

Maybe this all will pass, then we can boycott the gougers....(if I spelled that right?)

In ground tanks for gas stations are usually 6000 gallon for premium, 6000 for mid grade, and 10000 gallons for regular. If they just got a fuel delivery and they were full, it is a very large margin. Usual markup on fuel isnt that much, you would be suprised on how few pennies they get per gallon.

Thats what we had at a small gas station I used to manage in 1994.

You make pretty much nothing selling gas... maybe 2 or 3 cents a gallon. Remember that the dealer is at the end of a line of many, many middle men that make incrementally more per gallon as you go up the "Food Chain".
My family owned a Flying "A" station. My mother ran the gas station, and my brother, and I pumped gas... My Dad and Uncle ran the Service Department, Body Shop, Towing Service, plus we had the only Ambulance for 30 miles. The gas station was mostly run as a loss... a good way to get people in to see what a nice shop we had. Try to find a "Service Station" now...

Thank you for buying CITGO here is your Slurpee, and Doritos... Have a nice day! :-D

We're in north cedrntal Illinois, westbound on Interstate 80 and only 1,426 miles (if we believe the GPS) from Wendover.  We're going to WoS and the priovate meet, having picked up the nitrous ZX12R from the race shop that rebilt the engine for us.  We run a diesel so don't pay strict attention to gasoline prices, but the last station I saw (through the heavy rain, just ten miles or so ago) showed both gas and diesel a bit uner $4/gallon.  We're paid about 4 bucks for diesel since we left Marquette yesterday, where it was about $4.35/gallon.  Indiana was $3.92, here I'm seeing $3.97, and so on.  Gas is pretty much the same -- although usually a dime or so less than diesel.

I'll watch the prices and post as the trip ensues.  We plan to be in Beautiful Bendover by Monday suppertime.  We'll have both the stocker 14R, that we had at Speedweek, and the nitrous bike, for Wos.

Ta-ta for now.  Still raining at mile marker 65 in I-80 westbound.

CNN just posted a line saying crude oil prices fell to below 100 $  per barrel at the fri. closing. Thats about a 30% drop from the highs of just a month ago.  So still, the question being is - Who's taking the consumer to the cleaners with the gas prices not also falling at least 30 % ?
These shenanigans should be remembered come Nov.

Be safe

Flying J truckstop, North Des Moines, Iowa, 4.30PM CDT:

Gasoline (87 octane): $3.529/gallon.  Diesel #2: $3.879/gallon.  Coffee:  Free with fill up.  Restrooms:  Clean, as usual in a Flying J.  Weather:  78F, partly/mostly cloudy (but no rain), gentle breezes out of the southwest.  Fuel economy (@62 mph):  about 12-14mpg.  It's been going down today (yesterday we got close to 15), most likely due to the windy rainy weather.  We're hoping for an imrpovement in the next two days.  We're towing the "old" trailer - 8 x 16 x 9' 6" high, with the viewing platform on the top -- which all told makes for some lousy aero.  With the "new" trailer - 6' wide by about 26' long and 7 1/2' high -- we get about half again as much miles per gallon (in other words, around 18mpg).

We'lll stay in Omaha or so tonight -- I'll letcha know about fuel again then.

Here we are, safely checked into a nice crack-whore-type motel in Lincoln, Nebraska, for the night.  We fueled in Gretna (half way between Omaha and Lincoln) and gasoline was $3.529/gallon for 87 octane, diesel was $3.899/gallon for #2.  Flying J buffet was $9.95.  There's a Nebraska Cornhokers game in town, so this motel cost me darn near $50 for the night!  Geez Louise, I hope we sleep well.

Tomorrow we get to enjoy the western 2/3 of Nebraska and most of Wyoming.  Woo-hoo, what sight-seeing we'll do -- places like Point of rocks, Wyoming (really -- look it up on a map!).

Good night, all.

Any time we discuss gas prices and potential gouging you are sure to get lots of traffic on the website: ie, We were in Houston from 8/23 to 8/30; saw gas at no name brand "x" for 3.29, filled the rent-car 1/2 block from the hotel in Sugar Land for $3.35, and topped off 1/2 mile from the turn in place at Hobby for $3.45.
State of Utah is in the "rip-off" mode; best I've found locally was at Costco by Valley Fair Mall in West Valley, just off I-215  at 3500 S.
I caught a $3.61 early in the week, no idea what it might be now, but all the "name" stations are .20 higher.
Folks coming in for WOS, stay safe, weather is just outstanding!
Regards,
 Jim

SSydney, Nebraska - 2.30 PM MDT, Sunday, 14 September.  Diesel was $3.959 per gallon, gasoline about $3.799.  Wal-Mart had Powerade sport drink for 60 cents/quart and Monster Java (coffee) for $8.48/four pack.

We'll get to Rawlins tonight, SLC and Wendover tomorrow.  Bike inspection-land Tuesday morning.

This morning in the Motel 6 in Greta, Neb, a fellow noticed my race shirt and flamey pants -- and asked about Bonneville.  How'd he even detect me?  Anyway, he and his buddy are from Ontario and headed (on thier bikes) to World of Speed.  First-timers -- you know the story:  "I remember seeing photos in the magazines when I was a kid" and "I know this is one of those places I've got to see before I die" and so on.  Cool -- always glad to share stories with newbies to the salt.  Later on in the drive today those two fellas passed us and waved.  Glad we're towing the trailer with all of the stickers on it -- they might not have noticed the pickup without the extra help from the trailer.

Later --

Well, Jon; You have my sympathy for having to stop in Rawlins. The last time We were there, we decided that the dinosaurs died off because they either couldn't find good food or just got tired waiting to be served. :roll:One of the places on my list to avoid. Vernal, UT. a close second. Best food that we found was ot the City Market deli or Subway.
Here's an update of local fuel for those who might care.
Flying J has a very good website that gives their prices for the entire country; maybe you already know this, but I didn't, and there may be others as ignorant.
Costco 87 oct this PM on the way home from MMP; West Valley city, near Valley Fair mall; $3.569 Prem, $.20 more. I notice Flying J only makes a $.10 diff 'tween swamp water and real gas...Drive safely and wacth for Brother John; Tooele County is out for "revenue enhancement".

One of the big benefits of ALWAYS driving below the speed limit is good fuel economy.  Another is not having to worry about the speed traps/speed cops.

We got served in prompt fashion last night at Kentucky Greased Squirrel -- although the portions were minimal at best.  Weather Channel says it's 34F right now -- maybe we'll take the long way through town to warm up the diesel before hitting I-80.

Bendover tonight, honey!  (Hmm, does that sound prurient?)

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Oil prices fell sharply Monday as Wall Street's latest tale of woes added fuel to the economic slowdown that has been crippling demand for energy.  >note the words "crippling oil demand"<

In addition, initial reports showed that Hurricane Ike did not do as much damage as was originally feared to the Gulf Coast region.

Now Iam just a life long tradesman & shade tree mechanic - so -
OK, - barrel prices are now well below 100$$ - a seven month low. So the question stands, why are we, as well as our Euorpean brothers and sisters still being taken to the cleaners on fuel prices that have not receded as fast as they went up with barrel prices. At this point I have to call it for what I think it is - good old Corporate GREED>
Shoot - I just want to be able to get to the salt once a year and maybe even to Maxton to go fast and have a little fun at the age of 60yrs young.
Yall have some fun, but I hope most remember these kind of oil patch good ole boys shennanigans come November.

Come one come all to Maxton this month and in October if you can..

The NC Attorney General just announced potential charges against station owners who got caught gouging last Friday and Saturday.

I hope this makes national news.... We need to set a few examples...

Gas now hovering between 3.69 and 3,89 per gallon for 87 octane.

a few places still at over 4.00

Here in the Charlotte and Winston area, some stations are out of gas,, Price for regular is between 3.73 and 3.99 , Several Stations have no gas of any kind and said may get some late today, After Saturday seems supply will be moving,,  I am concerned about gas supply near Rockingham and Maxton (Atty. General, has stations scared about price gouging so price is not big concern for the trip, it is supply right now)

If it's raining tomorrow, I will wait to leave until Sun up Sat morning (have to just set up pit and wait in line to get car tech'd on Saturday, rather than Friday..

See you all there..

Track fuel should still be what it was in June,,, No price increase that I have seen from SUNOCO in the last few weeks.  We need to support our track vendor. I would think 9.00 to 10.00 per gallon for 110 or 112 is what I remember. I know 116 was kinda high last time.

Todd,  I have just removed the rear brakes and pulled the axles on the Vicky, she needs to turn more RPM's at the big end, fixing to put another third member in when my back quits hurting..Them big ole pumpkins are heavy..
Hope to have it back in tonight, and then brakes bled, so I can load up tomorrow between showers,

Because of the high chance of Rain Friday and this last minute rear end change, I will not be at the track until noon on Saturday.  Hope to get tech'd then and make 2 runs in the mid to late afternoon Saturday.

Keep Lane 1 open for us slow guys in cars.... LOL

See you then,

Charles

Our cheapest unleaded gasoline here in southwest Missouri is $3.33 per gallon, diesel is running at $3.79 per gallon.

I thought that we in Australia only had to pay a "premium" for diesel as we are told the crude oil that comes from our off shore supplies is to "dirty" to be refined for auotmotive use...hence its imported... we pay normally 20 cents to sometimes 30 cents  per litre over reg unleaded petrol.

Its a cost neutral decision when buying a petrol or a diesel car these days .
Title: Re: Gas just topped $5.25 per gal in NC
Post by: Seldom Seen Slim on September 25, 2008, 08:49:26 PM
Yes, Gazza, there's a premium on diesel vs. gasoline (you call it petrol) here, too, although these days it's less than about 10%.  Even so -- there's still a cost benefit for running a diesel, and there are also driveability reasons for running the diesel (at least in our pickup, towing a trailer).  Far less downshifts when climbing hills (maybe two or three in 1,800 miles, vs. dozens of them on the gasoline rig that we used to have), less engine roar, and so on.  No question in my book -- another diesel when this truck gets traded in.

Totally agree Jon when it comes to what we call 4WD's ie Landcruisers etc  and what you guys call pickups  etc,,,,, but for small cars....not cost effective as the petrol versions are so fuel efficient these days.

The increase cost of fuel really does hurt our economy over here as it flows thru into every industry.

Is finding stations with gas still a problem ? I'll be over in a few weeks time and don't want to be getting stuck.

Sam the central and western parts of the state have had some problems with supply,, But now most of that has passed.  By next week supply should be back.. I would just top off when tank gets to 1/2 full....That way you are safe.  Some stations run out for 1/2 to 1 day but others have gas, I have had to drive a few miles but last night all stations around me had gas and 87 octane gas was down to $3.55 per gallon.

See you in a few weeks.

Charles
