Looks like fun and a good start. As is often the case, what are the toys hidden behind the tank?
Pete

That's really neat. I'd love to build one too, if a decent P-38 tank came along.
Looks like you have a '37 V8-60 axle, and you've been cleaning it up.

Here are three views of one I polished with abrasives a few years ago. I have another one that's almost finished.

car on the left is a 56ish chassis research dragster powered by a scot blown flathead. car on the right is a 23ford altered drag car powered by a.. you guessed it flathead! lol
-
Great start. Going to be one sweet ride. You have a fine shop to build it in also.
expect we will be seeing some great things from you in the future.
-
Obvoiusly for you, them overhead valve thingys are just a passing phase.... :-D
-
Just curious. How did you put the bow in the side rails?
Pete
-
well to get the correct angle the tank was cut in half and traced onto the floor and then a hydraulic tube bender was used with some blocks in it to try to keep the kinking in the rectangle tube to a minimum and then we just kept bending and matching it up to the mark on the floor till it matched perfect. each spot the bender was moved to was measured and recorded so when the 2nd rail was bent the bender was put in the exact same spots.. they are pretty much both dead on. the fun part is gonna be getting the crossmembers all squared and welded in.
-
how lokg is that tank ??
-
tank is 13' 5" wheelbase is gonna be 133"

Joe
we will be trying to go as fast as it will go... :-D i would love to go 200 in it but its gonna be hard with a little flathead for power maybe at bonneville it might.. i think the record in maxton is in the 170's so we will be gunning for that
-
you will need the suspension for Maxton ... Looking forward to seeing it run there ... Joe
-
I'm on the edge of my seat looking forward to updates. You are a lucky sob to get your hands on an original P38 tank. I am just starting on a Rod-n-Race tank, also flathead powered. What axles are you running in the rear, originals or did you convert to a 9" type axle?
-
they are 9" axles. and yea the car is being built mainly for maxton so the rear suspension was a must have.
-
My bets are on you making it.
Steve :-D
-
Looks like you are doing it right. Class fabrication.
-
I don't know any thing about building a lakester except that is one darn cool car.I look forward to seeing fly down the track.

some pics of engine placement. the extra block on the back was just to get some more preloaded weight on there to see what the ride hight looked like. it wont be twin engine lol

yes. its a c4
-
Did you use Flat-o-matic for the adapter? I have talked with them and they seem to have a pretty good product. I plan on using their shorty kit for the c4 and am just curious to see what people think about the adapter. Thanks!
-
nope. the adapter was all hand made by my father. hes been running the same setup in a 32 5 window coupe with a supercharged flattie for a looooong time so we know it will work in this lol
-
Thank you for the info and look forward to more updates.....
-
Ron - Very very nice! I hope to get to see it in person some day.

CTRon,
good to see you getting involved, I'm guessing you will get some time behind the wheel? Your moving along at a fair rate. should be right for maxton.

havent updated in awhile but we are back full swing workin on the tank... we have also realized that it is not a p-38. not quite sure what it is just yet lol.. in this pic im thinkin man my fat arse is never gonna fit in this thing. dad is measurin to get a rough idea on the cage start.
cage time!

there will be a cover fabbed for the blower and some kind of windscreen/fairing made so the cage doesnt look so big. that is how big it needs to be though because with the sfi padding and a helmet on me an dad are 2" from the top...
none of the cage stuff is finish welded as of yet just tacked. i just finished fabbing up the headers and dad is workin on the rear shock mouting and such. will have pics of that stuff soon.

let the assembly begin!

good to see more progress, just looking at the frame tells us there is any number of ways to skin the bellytank cat.......that's a little tank you've got!, I hit 40 halfway through the build of our tank and put on 22lbs, make sure you've got room....it's the bending to get in that's the killer....
Motor's cool....

CTRon,
What is the status of your build? Looks like you were getting close.

-
its a running driving car now.. weve had it to maxton and loring. still working some bugs out of it and trying to find a gear that it likes.. baby steps for now lol
-
Have you got pictures? :-D
Pete
-
Ron,
Your tank looks a lot like the F6F hellcat tank I used in my latest build. Maybe F8F Bearcat? They are pretty close in size and shape if not identical. The build is looking great, I love a blown flathead!

:-D Now I gotta say, "That is purrrrrty!" See you on the Salt in '11? Crow.
-
Hi Bobby
Not sure if were going to make it to the salt this year. The price of diesel fuel is a big concern at the moment.
The body for our Lakester was used by the Navy pretty sure for the Bearcat fighter when I was removing all the layers of old paint I uncovered the original build ID information. The tank was built at the Navy Aircraft Factory Philadelphia PA also listed is the capacity 300 gallons and a part number.
When I split the tank in half inside I found a hand written serial number located in the nose area on each half the numbers were not in sequence. Also uncovered the number 815 on the tail of the tank so we thought that would be a perfect choice for the vehicle number hence the 8150 number.
This has been a fun project building the car with the help of my son even with the problems we have experienced and I'm sure theres still a few more to come its still worth the effort.

Hi Crow
Sorry about that I'm still pretty new to all of this stuff. Were still hoping to make it out in August not throwing in the towel this early heck we have rooms which is half the battle. Look forward to saying stopping by to say hi.
But in the mean time theres two events at Maxton we plan on running the lakester at this spring and in July if everything is still together we will attend the Loring LSR event. Before I got into this land speed stuff we would spend the good weather driving our Hot Rod to events then pull up a chair and just sit around all weekend long now doing this land Speed stuff its work work work I mean fun fun fun. LOL

You got that right! The fun part is the working! Stop by the Old Crow Pits and say "Howdy" You sound like your "salt bit" already! See you in August! Crow. LFFL
