Title: Travel time
Post by: maj on June 06, 2008, 10:01:09 AM
Hey Guys
There are a few of us Aussies coming over for Bubs and Wos  and i was thinking of checking out El Mirage on the 14th to see a bit of dirty action, if i did how long would it take to drive back to Bonneville and what would be the implications of arriving at Wos late as a racer,

I can only address the WoS/late aspect of your question -- by saying that we'll be glad to inspect your vehicle whenever you arrive, and then you can race.

It's unfortunately not uncommon for the event to end a bit early -- because of weather, so keep that in mind.  Two years ago we ran about two and a half days before calling it quits.  I think the '07 event was full-length.

Are you going to attempt to race at EM -- or race at Bub's, leave the bike (I assume it is if you're going to Bub's) in Wendover and travel to and from EM?  And do you have a copy of the USFRA inspection sheet so that you can make and prep changes necessary after running at Bub's?  If not -- said sheets are available at the USFRA site, I think (www.saltflats.com).

We look forward to seeing you on the Salt.

You would be looking at about a 12 hour drive from Wendover to El Mirage, depending on speed, route and conditions.

Bonneville from my house is 670 miles according to my odometer. Going to El Mirage for me is the same route as going to Bonneville. El Mirage is 90 mile from my house. So you could deduct 90 from 670 and it would be 580 miles from Bonneville to El Mirage. Hope that helps.

SSS   Briefly thought about racing at EM but i think it would get a bit too hectic , so sight seeing only if we go (lots of other things too see between the Bonneville meets) probably will try and leave the bike near Bonneville but that may depend on its running status .
Hope to have all necessary forms completed in good time and the bike ready to run before we leave Wendover after Bubs,

12 hrs is not bad sharing a drive, least you don't have kamakasi Kangaroos trying to complicate the drive
Goto keep rethinking distances, too used to kilometers , i see 580 and think "easy " then do a quick calc and its ~940 km ....

Please think about the fact that you will be crossing many miles of open range. There are wild horses, elk, deer, antelope ect to avoid. Enjoy the drive but don't forget that there are hazards.

As I remember - you've got to be careful of the topless women drivers in California.  They're a distraction.  Worse still are the guys that are looking at the girls -- they're all over the road to get a better look.  Consider renting a tall semi-tractor so you'll have some altitude for girl-watching.  I drive such a truck -- absolutely the best ride on the public highways.

If you do the 93, 6, 395 route you avoid pretty much anything that even remotely resembles a big city along the entire path. Bishop is the biggest thing you will see and it cant really even be considered a city. More of a wide spot in the road.

Plus, if you are lucky you might get abducted by aliens along the way.

Maj,

Figure on a day to drive from el Mirage and the high desert to the salt.  A good stop is at Prim, NE near the California border where the room rates are $20-$25 a night, an easy evening drive from the dirt and a half hour or so from Las Vegas.  There are wide open stretches along the road and there is Las Vegas with very heavy traffic (bumper to bumper, stop and go) at certain times of the day.  You can always stop at one of the casinos for a cheaper buffet lunch for a break.  Avoid Saturday going to Vegas and Sunday going back to Los Angeles, it can be stop and go the entire distance.  My daughter lived a couple of blocks from the Peterson Museum in Los Angeles and figured on a ten hour drive to come home 710 miles to Salt Lake, door to door, using I-15.  Cut a couple of hours off that when going through Ely to Wendover, 120 fewer miles to travel.
We start WOS inspection on Wednesday the 16th of September and continue on Saturday if necessary, by then just for 130 Club entries.  We usually run out of contestants around noon to one on Saturday and with a few folks just running laps we shut down so we can start the wire pick up.  Most folks have had as many runs as they need/want by that time and have either set their records, broken or realized they are not going to go as fast as they had hoped and are ready to pack it in.  It's always fun to just spectate on the 130 Club course.  Those folks have more fun than anyone on the salt.

Thanks  :-D
Google maps is getting a fair workout while i figure where everything is in relation to each other .
I will break the drive i think, nothing like getting into an unfamiliar  area to get caught out on little things like limited opening hours for the gas station in the middle of nowhere .

Thinking of a c2500, that should have a fair view   8-)  have to get Mick to drive so i can keep an eye out for those distracted drivers  :-D
