Title: Will VP gas pass tech?
Post by: isiahstites on April 07, 2008, 12:21:23 AM
Curious if anyone can tell me if VP's c12 gas would pass inspection if I set a record at El Mirage?

I have looked all over Scta-Bni's website and can not find anything .

I thought if your in a gas class it didn't matter what gas you ran, as long as it was not some sort of fuel.  PM Dan Warner or some of the tech guys to make sure.

I read somewhere (and for the life of me I can't remember where) that C12 is a legal gas for El Mirage.  Did the SCTA get a new "analyzer"?

I just want to make sure that it is alright. I would hate to finally get to impound only to have my gas fail the test.

Have the gas tested before you run. Take your fuel to tech inspection and they can check it for you. If it doesn't pass you can buy gas from George Callaway.

Give Fogy a call.He has a list that shows the numbers for the gases available and if they are OK to run.

Hi,
We ran VP C16 last year at El Mirage too and it passed tech when we set a record.

The web site posted lists the Dielectric Constants for most gasolines.

C-16 is a sort of "standard" in that it comes in on the meter darn close to 0.0, pretty much no sweat when the old rule called for DC's less than 2.3

But now if you go down to Circle K or 76 and buy 91 octane, it will read between 5.5 and 7.0+/-.  What?  You can't run pump gas as "gas"?  So in mid stream last year the D/C limit was bumped to 6.0 to allow for "modern" gasolines.

Because many pump gasolines were still outside the limit, and because of some questioning by some of us who want to run "hotter" gasolines and the difficulty in establishing just what exactly is a "gasoline", the rules committee met, and after some long discussions with Rick Gold of ERC, decided that in the future, gasoline was anything with a D.C. less than 15.0 (see the new Blue Book, the one with an SDRC bike and an SDRC car on the cover, for the new rule).

So, yes, your C-12 at -0.5 certainly looks like it will qualify.

Just so it is clear to me, if you run a gas class at El Mirage, you do NOT have to buy gas there and have your tank sealed (like Speedweek)? You just run whatever is in your tank and have it tested if you break a record?
Thanks

Or if you think you have a chance of setting a record, have it tested at tech beforehand.  :-D

Maybe this needs to be said... maybe not.  Maybe you are already smart enough... but I wasn't and managed to dodge a MAJOR bullet.

Took my brand new can of race gas into the trailer to be tested before racing.  It was late enough in the day that the can had warmed up.  I pulled up the little plastic spout, unscrewed the top, and then, without a thought, tore off the spout seal.  And that brand new (now hot) race gas literally exploded out of the can, blowing all over the inside of the trailer, me and JD.  Only by the grace of God were we not hospital casualties/burn victims.  As it was we were soaked in gas and experienced all the "fun" that that can be.  Thank the Lord nobody was smoking!

Soooo... the first time you open your new can, do it cold, like in the morning, outside away from any structures, and put a rag or something over the seal when you pop it.

Oh, and near a fire extinguisher might not be a bad idea too.

Keep the rubber side down,

Jim
