Classic tanks are fantastic, and yours looks great.
I'm very curious about the motor. Can't place it, from the side view that's a very flat looking head.

Yep a classic tank indeed, well done.

What are the plans with the rollcage, etc? Enclosed or old school?

Ok we are running a 1954 302 GMC 6 banger  ! 30 over with 670 holley 4 barrel carb ,SRL cam shaft ,patricks intake manifold ,my custom header ( old hemi header ) I started on this car about 4 months ago , going to try and get the chassis painted in a week or so !!! This is a 42" tank !!! So we sure have plenty of room ! Not enough for a big screen but at least we can be comfortable ! Would love to take it down to Maxton in april to test it out !!! I'm going to post some earlier pix. !!! Keep in mind  I have only built drag cars and Pro street cars so this is a first for me !!! Yes we have it bad !!!

Looks like you are going to do a windscreen that is the shape of the tank, have you found anyone that will make that shape for you from Lexan?? Steve Nelson  has his lakester done except for the windscreen and he is having a really hard time finding anyone that can make the windscreen out of Lexan that you can see thru. He has a couple of attempts from several guys that are so wavy that it would make you sick to look thru!!

Try Gustafsson Plastics in St. Augustine, FL. Leif makes zillions of bike screens and hasmade a couple of custom ones for us -- based on drawings that I sent him.  The cost is reasonable, the time from his receipt of your order to delivery of the screen is short -- less than a week for me -- and he keeps the drawings on file you can modify, if necessary, or re-order.  I don't remember for sure -- I think it's www.bikescreen.com or something like that.

Are windows are done and in the car ! The white protective coating is still on the glass ,so we don't scratch or get over spray on them .They are made of Makorlon (Poly carbonate) I did them myself . The stuff is a bit expensive but it sure is slick to work with !!! You can work this stuff like sheet metal ! Break it ,shear it , drill it ,I have even put beads in it on my bead roller !!! you can even smash it with a hammer !!!! (I do that just to demonstrate how tuff it is to people) Lexan will crack and bust and distort  ! This does none of that !!! About $150 for a 4x8 sheet out of Mcmastercarr !

Looking good 17. Hey Rex, I used Aircraft Windshield in Los Alamitos. They formed my screen from PETG. It basically has the properties of Lexan but is optically better. Wayno

If you set a pace at Bonneville that even comes close to the speed that you're putting this car together, you're going to walk away with hats and hardware.

I see your work ethic, and I am ashamed of myself!

Quit it you guys !!! Your going to jinx us !!! Well I learned everything I do from my Pops !! He used to build pro street cars in about 3 weeks from pretty much scratch , to have them ready for a car show that would be coming up SOON !!! Don't let the few months fool you !!  I have a ton of hours in this car , just ask my wife and kids !!! I think they are still here somewhere  !!!!  I do need a little help though ? What gears should we take along ?   5500 rpm's max with a 32" tall tire !!! We are running a 9" ford , just to stay away from the 10 or 15% hp. loss from a quick change . We are going to start out with a 260 ratio . And we will be taking a few other pigs just in case my head is not on right !!!  My motto is " TO GET SOMETHING DONE YOU MUST FIRST DO SOMETHING !!! "

Go to Sumner's site, here's the link

http://purplesagetradingpost.com/sumner/bvillecar/bville-spreadsheet-index.html

He's got a pile of spreadsheets that you can punch your numbers into, and it will give you a really good idea exactly what you're going to have to have in order to be competitive.

He requests that you send him a dollar for the sheets - it will be the single most cost effective investment you will spend on this sport.

On top of that, his lakester build diary is a fascinating read.

....that gearing looks like about 35mph per 1000rpm ....... you could probably use a shorter diff early on until you really want to push things along .

Elvis Cadillac Pink and Banana Yellow - you won't lose THAT one in the parking lot!  Very nice!

Back to the drive train, and specifically the transmission.  What tranny and gearset are you running?

Title: Re: Midwest Lakester Build !!

Tranny is a 3 spd. out of a 1955 chevy truck ! Super short ,fits great !We are going to use 2nd and 3rd gear only .Using Hyd. clutch . Not sure what gears are in it yet ! But we will find out and change them if needed, soon as we get our motor done! Waiting on our dome pistons to get here !!

phew....I didn't want to say anything , I mean people's reason's for choosing colors can be , shall we say "complex" , and I'll be the first person the say that yellow things look good on the salt.......but that "pink" had me worried.....

It looks great , you've done well and I'm sure I ain't the only one to say I'm eagerly waiting to see the results on the track........

Yes ,we are not pink lovers here at all !!! This car has been a blast to build !!! We are ready to get it running though !!! I have a tube chassis 1970 Monte Carlo drag car to build still ,and I just bought me a 1979 Malibu to go drag racing with this year !! Oh yeah, I haven't even started on it yet !!! I would love to have the lakester running by Maxton mile in April !!!  "It's the little things that eat the time on my watch " !!!

My humblest apologies - my "color commentary" was never meant to be offensive.  But I stand by my statement that you won't lose it in the parking lot!

We're ALL cheering you on, and if the Monte or the Malibu doesn't distract you, I think Maxton is a very realistic goal.

We have 3 girls and they wouldn't mind it painted pink !!!! No offence taken here !! I have been taking pix with my cell phone , they don't show colors very well !! And my digital camera seems to take to large of a image to down load .But I love to show our progress on Landracing.com  This site has been so helpfull as stated before ! We are going to try and get it outside tommorow , it's not supposed to snow !!!!! But our weather people have been wrong before !!! While we are waiting on the motor ,I might go ahead and get some lettering cut and put on it !!!

Never replied before, but your emails from all you guys inspire me, as I work on my new (old) D/SR here in Kansas City....in the middle of a good 'ole midwestern winter.  I am just the opposite of you, began building my 27 Highboy in '81 for the street, but spent time at B'ville in the '70's...when I worked for Holley....thought they was all nuts!  Now I guess I'm nuts too.  Mine is Car 778 (number to be confirmed) and its Hugger Orange running a Boss 302.  Building it by myself in my small 2 car garage......Good Luck to you guys, I'll see you at the Salt for a week of fun.  Give me your address, and when I come through Indy, I'll stop by.....Keep up the great work!

Thanks for the invite!  Tonight, I am pulling my custom built independent suspension out of my former street rod and picked up my narrowed (53") 9" Ford axle out of a totally wasted 81 Ford Pick-Up at Pick a Part here in Kansas City.  Hopefully, I will have it in by this weekend with the exception of the final welding on the traction bars.  I am using a Panhard Bar in the rear.  Next to finish up my "all-in-one" push bar/chute anchor/chute pack bar (totally adjustable by the way) that goes up and over the rear lower deck of my '27 Ford Roadster.  Last time I was at the Brickyard was with Jim Wheeler, who owns Powerdyne Centrifical Superchargers.  He was brought up around Indy Cars, and is Joey "JR" Granatelli's God Father.  He also owns a couple of the Indy Roadsters on display in the museum....was a great time seeing the cars and history at the museum!  Well, back to the roadster.  After the push bar final fit, on to the Boss 302.....maybe I should switch to a GMC 302.  A friend of mine has one in a HAMB Dragster that he is just finishing up, with all the best parts, like yours.

Thanks Again!  Have a Great Day!

I'm ashamed of taking so long to build my project. I want some of the drugs you take so I can have that much energy. Seriously, the car looks good and I'd be really interested to know how it runs.

Another Kansas City, 302 Jimmy builder here. This one is going in a HAMB dragster.

321 cid, 12:1 CR, 8.111 c-c rods, JE pistons, Dema Elgin cam, self built aluminum roller rocker assembly, self built 3 x 2 Intake with Rochester 2GC carbs. Not sure what the header will be but will test several on the engine dyno at K&M Machine Shop in Raytown. Fortunately I have lots of time available on the dyno since I dyno and tune all their engines.

Ya thats us, getting ready to run Maxton in a couple weeks and just fired the gmc hamb dragster toady. Going to install a transmission ( been trying direct drive with clutch)  and make some changes to the ventilation on the engine. had a oil leak 3rd round at MoKan last year.
The engine i loaned the boys for their lakester is a killer engine from bottom to top. They should run well in the lakester....

You'll be pissed when you find out it was just cloudy, with a little fog in the morning.  You are at home, they are racing...
(ask the guys that didn't go to Speedweek last year)

From my limited experience [half dozen or so trips down] Maxton can have it's own seperate weather pattern often unlike reports from either Charlotte or Wilmington on the coast.  We have gone down in the rain, come back in the rain, and had it rain while there.  Never happened to catch a total washout yet, course dries fast.  Shower delays are just an excuse to better enjoy the car show.

We will be loading today and plan on heading out tomorrow morning with the 260 RMR.  I'll be looking for the Blue bus, gotta pick your brain and maybe steal some tech [thinking on a similar set up for a lakester under construction].

Well ,good decision or bad we voted not to go this meet. We do plan on going before September maybe in May or a later date.
Every weather service on the planet shows rain on sat!
The good side is we cleaned out the hauler, filled her with fuel and rearranged every part in the storage area . We will get there some time this year. :-D

Ok here is the new update ! Trailer done , Lakester done and running ,now we are starting on the hauler !!! How about a 1949 Chevy Panel truck ? Yep we might as well build something cool to haul this stuff out there with !!! Going to get the front nova clip in this weekend !Should make the ride a little easier on the azzzz !! Got a 350 small block and 5 speed to put in it ! I will post some pix. this weekend ! Most of the trucks paint we already have stripped , we are going to go with flat red on the body and yellow fenders just opposite of the trailer . Should be a pretty cool rig when all hooked up ! We took the lakester to a local car show last weekend ,people around here were blowed away by it !!! Never seen anything like it !!! That is so cool !!!! Can't wait to meet everyone at Bonneville !!!!!

Late' st up date as of July 4th ! Well looks like everything is a go for Maxton and Bonneville this year ! We are finishing up the panel truck now ! I have since been building a dragster to play with ! You know more than a couple times a year ! It is a 1950's style "design"  I'm running a 235 straight 6 and it's getting close to being done ! The class is called HA/GR that I will be running in ! and has to be built from parts no newer than 1962 !!! Pretty cool ! Here is a pix. to check out !

Let's see if I've got this straight -

You throw together a tank in 5 months . . .

and then you build a vintage inline digger in your free time before Bonneville?

Ah, to be young and disenfranchised again . . .

When you are born into this car building thing , like i was ! It's the only thing you can think about !So with my old man having built about 150 drag and pro street cars over the years , I have to follow suit  !!! Or maybe it is a sickness  !!! I'm actually starting on # 2 of the HA/GR cars now !! For my co-owner of the Lakester !!! Sucks now though with my new job ,I might not be able to go to Bonneville !!! Definately will make Maxton though !!!

I'm not sure what's wrong but all I'm seeing are the dreaded little red x's.

Have you used refrigerated eye drops?  I don't see any red X's.  Maybe you could tell me more about where you see them and I could maybe maybe maybe figure out why they're there.
