Title: old time lake racer bike
Post by: sheribuchta on January 25, 2008, 05:18:46 PM
This is going to be a long build because of part supply, weather, and my other projects. So if everybody would do me a favor and try not to post so we don't stretch this out to far. Try to keep the build on the first few pages then you can post all you want. It's basically a single down tube frame with a swingarm and a pair of coil overs mounted horizontally on top frame rail. Or maybe to the top of the motor. The bike is for Eric Ross. He's tired of riding his Ducati 140 mph on a 170 record. So we are going to build him a bike that will run the number. Dave Bozzie (the son of John Bozzie, builder owner rider of the twin engine drag bike called  "the Thing" and a rider at Bonneville in the '50's) is going to build the motor and the rest is up to me. It's going to be a cross between a board track racer and a neo classic custom. Kinda weird but that's what Eric wants. So here goes...
I started building some of the parts awhile back so some of the pics are older than the rest. I don't work on the bike everyday but when I do I'll post pics. If you have any questions direct them to www.willieworld@hotmail.com.

Here are some more pics of the front frame tube it goes underneath the motor where there is a cutout to clear the motor. There is some reinforcing that will tie into some other frame tubes later on. The reinforcing plate was bent in the vise with a hammer. The notch was cut in the tube on the band saw.

Took some more pics..than took it out of the frame jig today. It still needs rear suspension and minor detail but you'll get the jest of it.

I think Eric has a good eye!
I haven't seen alot of your work, but what I have seen so far seems to be very well thought out and executed. It is exceptional for you to share this with all of us... a true heart for this sport and industry both!
Thanks for helping remind us all that it's not about the ability to fabricate, but moreso about the inability to try. There's many on here with the ability to do, there's many less on here with the willingness to share by laying it all out on the table(physically and figuratively both).
Nice stuff(http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o244/narider/Misc/thumb.gif)

Kent, being a Twin Cam(2 piece rather then 3pc like an evo) it needs virtually no clearance to get the rocker cover off.

I like the profile, placement & streamline of the orange one. The other two are too bulky in each direction. When you remake it in metal can you make a twin & send it to Todd so I can have my street bike tank back?  :-D

Love your handy work and on line presentation! I like the Harley shaped one. :-D

Eric came up from LA. We spent a couple of days and we couldn't find a gas tank that Eric liked so we decided to make one. So while he was here we spent a couple of days of banging and hammering and cutting and shaping and putting bandaids on our fingers. And this is the result...
Two tank halves tacked together. It's not perfect and it still needs some work but you get the idea.

Eric came up for a couple of days. We worked on his bike. We decided that the tank was too thick so we cut an inch out of it and we finished up the swingarm. We mounted the shocks and got the bike up on the rear wheel and checked out the rear suspension to make sure it was going to work. Cause when we ordered the coil overs we kinda guessed on the spring rate. As it turns out we were right on the money(by some miracle). Anyway we got all that done. The engine is coming together. We are having some problems with a belt drive turbo charger but we are getting that sorted out.The problems with the turbo chargers that we found so far are that they are built for street applications, which means that they are usually too small. Anyway, that's another story.
We are going to have the bike at speedweek. Hopefully running. Here's some pics.

hello sports fans--we got everything sorted out with the turbo folks --"its on its way"  --i had to reshape the fender a little to fit the radius of the wheel--the front end eric ordered was 4 inches to long (not erics fault they sent the wrong one) so i shortened it 4 inches--the seat will be mounted on a single leaf spring mounted on only one end(a local spring shop will make the spring) still have to mount the rear fender and make the handlebars  thinking of old board track looking bars  got the wheels and tires  nate jones gave them a haircut--we are still on schedule for speedweek (yes this year)  anyway here are some pics---willie buchta

I do need to get my front tire shaved down{it's too close to my inter cooler :x} . I think it will be cheaper then buying a new shorter one :? Can I use you as a Referral to Nate Jones or anyone you know  closer to me in Vegas :|?

Kaz:

Nate Jones will give you a decent price, whether you mention the name of a customer or not (at least that's been my experience).  But -- at this time of year, with the racing season in full swing, you'll likely pay more/have a longer wait than if you order in December/January/February.  Nate reminded me of that - both when I ordered early in the year and when I forgot and didn't call 'til July. . .

He attends events at the Salt -- and will often show up at the pit of a racer who's running one or more of his (Nate's) tires.  That's good customer service in my mind -- and it makes the cost even easier to take.

Good luck on getting Willie to help with your build.  Oughta be an interesting conversation in the shop. . .

I'm wondering about the rear suspension spring(s) location.  I suppose you won't squeeze your thighs together when the rear wheel goes up and down, or your voice may change to a few octaves higher once the screaming stops.  Tell me you are going to consider a spring shield.

Willie - Do what ever works best for you with the pictures. I believe, along with some others that it is easier to follow your work if the picture already popped up full screen in the thread with caption above or below them with what exactly is happening in the photo, it makes it easier to understand your thoughts and the message you are trying to send to the reader if you can read what you wrote, view the picture and move to the next. Instead of reading the whole paragraph you wrote and then looking at the four photos decribed in the paragraph and trying to decide which photo you are referring to.

Scott

This is how it was posted orginally and I know it just tanks, but on some of your more technical stuff it easy to get lost in which picture you are describing

I blew up my engine at the last meet I have been waiting for the parts which came today. I had some time to work on Eric's bike and I got the seat mounted which pivots at the front and sets on a leaf spring. Got the rear fender mounted and a set of handlebars made and a couple of gauges in the gas tank. Not bad for a couple of days work. Here are some pics.

Willie built the battery box for Eric's bike. After putting the fins on which he welded one by one, he swore that it looked like an art deco toaster...

Not only can Willie weld and build bikes -- he can Photoshop pretty well, too.

(Watch -- he'll say he sacrificed a couple of slice of bread and just plunked 'em on top of the box).

Got the pro charger in today for Eric's bike. We mocked it up to see what it will look like. It will need a couple of mods cause they don't make it for a custom bike they only make it for a stock Harley. Its a very nice kit. Its all polished, its all billet stuff. I'm very impressed with it. It kind of changes the look of the bike but it will be ok.Believe it or not with 10 days to go till Bonneville, we are going to try to have this bike up and ready to go.
Sheri is going over our two bikes trying to get them ready to go, as well as, packing up the trailer and running for parts. We are leaving on Saturday morning bright and early. When the gates open up Sunday morning, whoever is behind me in line will have to honk to wake me up.
Heres some pics... See ya on the salt.

"I would Love a Scholarship to one of the Tech school though"

Once again you want someone to give you something. My father always told me to responsible for my actions. If what I did resulted in good it was a benefit, if the result is bad time to change your actions.

Maybe if you stopped spending your money on lost projects, burned up trucks and broken Subarus, you would have the cash to complete at least one bike project before moving on to something more complicated.

John,

There is no rule in the SCTA rulebook for exhaust gas in the motorcycle class. However, there is a rule for exhaust outlets. It's 7.B.20 Exhaust   "All exhaust system outlets shall be directed away from rider, the rear tire and the course surface". The pics are kind of decieving.

That would have been the perfect opportunity to change the rule. On Eric's bike the pics are deceiving. Actually the exhaust is way outside his foot and his leg. I will take a better picture of it today with Eric on the bike and one of myself also.

Willie,

From my experience the heat from the exhaust will come in slightly and it can get very hot quickly... :-o

Better to just make it right now before the build is complete..

Will you be adding a collector to the headers? Also they just seem short, I know you don't turn these motors big revs which would typically have a short primary but I doubt that your engine will see much over 6500.(?)

The first pics we posted of the exhaust were deceptive. They look like the pipe is going right to the foot peg but its not. Here are some pics with Eric in his levis and Bruno Magli's. Hope to see you all in May. We are going to be having a barbecue on Saturday night after course walk around 6:00. Come on by and bring your own brew...

All right Willie a Procharger centrifugal supercharger! :-D

How much boost are you expecting and can you change the gearing on the blower?

How do they drive the blower?

Looking good and see you at EL mirage JL222

P.S. It won't sound like one of those Bloodless Siphers :-o

jl222--there are 2 drives ..the first is off the crankshaft inside the primary to an idler pulley ..the other side of the idler pulley is outside the primary ..the belt in the pic goes from the idler to the turbo then inside the turbo is a gear drive ---with the 1st and 2nd drive and the gears inside the turbo the ratio is 10 to 1 ----5000 motor rpm=50000 turbo rpm --- when we told pro charger what we wanted to do they got right on it and designed this system for this bike --expected boost is 15 psi--the motor is 124 cu in  bozzie motor that should make 200 hp --as soon as i finish the bike it will go to dave bozzie for some dyno work and then to el mirage on may 16--- hope to see you all there  willie buchta

Willie - don't insult that centrifugal supercharger by calling it a turbo and especially Procharger. Turbos are centrifugal blowers driven by the exhaust with the results that sound like a [bloodless sipher] first stated by a famous English motorsports writer when one of the first turbo charge formula 1 cars went by a Coswirth about 30 mph faster.

There was some comments about the pipes being to close to Erics foot. Even though there is no rule about that, the pipes according to the rulebook are absolutely legal. But Eric called Tom Evans and Tom said that it would probably be a good idea to move the pipes away from Erics foot so that he wouldn't get hasseled when he went through tech. So I moved the front pipe forward 3 1/2 inches, as you can see in the pics. I should have built the pipes on the build diaries but I didn't. When I build the rear pipe I will send some pictures. I didn't do the paint work. A friend of Eric's named Steve Tibbetts painted the tank and fender. Everything else on the bike was powder coated. Thanks for all the kind words.

PS. Kaz, I was looking through a book the other day and seen some pictures of your V-Rods.

Tell me about the engraving on the intake cover.  And what did you use to get the flat black finish on the bits, like the oil filter mounting.

Heres the bikes that Willie was talking about. Twin engine evo and a twin cam bagger. He's going to do the WFB(Worlds faster bagger). It is an unofficial record which Laura Klock holds now at 146. Unless she upgraded it this year. Both bikes will be at El Mirage in May. The other pic is of Eric's bike which will be at El Mirage in May.
