Title: Vintage bike questions from a newbie
Post by: goingfaster5 on January 14, 2008, 02:51:32 PM
I am planning to bring a vintage bike to BUB this year.  I have the read the BUB/AMA rulebook located here http://www.speedtrialsbybub.com/2007_event/AMA-BonSR%27s-2007-v4-3.pdf at least two dozen times.

I am left with a few questions, and would greatly appreciate some advice.

First, is this the only rulebook I need to be observing?

Second, we are having trouble confirming the exact year of our bike.  It is a 1955 type model, but wether it is a '55, 56' or 57 is really almost impossible to determine.  There is no evidence the bike was ever titled, it has always been a race bike.  What method is used to determine production year?

Lastly, I would like to run electronic ignition and fuel injection.  Definetly not vintage, but I don't see any problem in the rule book.  I am targeting A-VF or APS-VF.  The head, barrels, cases are original.

Thanks very much for your assistance.

Mike

Mike, I had real good luck with the Harley folks in Milwaukee to get some background info on my old 1974 XLH. All I needed was the Vin numbers off the case. They were even able to tell me the sale date, and what dealer sold the bike. You did'nt mention what make the bike was, but the H-D people are easy to work with for info your lookinf for.
Good luck, and have fun.

"The head, barrels, cases are original."

Not too many 1955 engines have separate barrels and 1 head.
What's the engine?

The rules are from 2007, so 2008 should have 1957 for the cutoff date. Might solve your problem.

Good catch, that should have read "original heads".

It is a BMW.  The US importer from that era is long gone, and their records burned up anyway.
I have some "bill of sale" paperwork, but I will have to see how for back that goes.

I just don't want to be too suprised in tech inspection.  It is clearly a 1955 model, I am just not sure I can PROVE that is 55,56 or 57.

I reading "prior to 1957" (assuming this year bumps up a year), to NOT include 1957.

Thanks!

Mike
