Title: Vesco Motorcycle Streamliner Restoration
Post by: isiahstites on November 16, 2007, 08:52:13 PM
Kent thought it would be cool to do a build diary on the Vesco liner he is restoring for the J&P Nation Motorcyle Musuem. Since he is so extremly busy working on finishing the liner I will stop by the shop on a regular basis and take pics and relay the build here to landracing.com.

This liner was one of Ricks liners that was built in the late 60's and features twin XS650 Yamaha motors.
Kent is shooting to have the liner finished in about 10 days so he is going to be busy. They are going to fit the motors in this evening so the body work can be fitted tonight or tomorrow. After the body is prepped and fitted Kent is aiming for painting it tomorrow evening.

All of the powercoated parts are back from the coaters and ready for assembly along with all of the shiny parts. The wheels are currently out and should be ready soon.

This build diary will consist of the final assembly as Kent has already does the initial mach-up, which included lots of new parts that he made in the machine shop along with fabrication to restore the damaged parts.

Scott

Here are some shots of the newly powdercoated frame along with the bottom section of the body work being fitted.

Here is the steering head.

Very nice looking, looks like lots of work in such a short amount of time!

The steering head looks like it's supported by pretty small tubing, any issues with flex?  I only ask as it was one of the things I was warned off in a motorcycle streamliner, that flex in the head or the frame could result in bad handling.

Also, based on the position of the head tube it looks like the riders legs straddle the front wheel, is this the case, or is the scale hard to tell from the photos?

Look forward to seeing the final result.

Ok guys, I stopped by the shop today and Kent was hard at work. He got all of the chrome accessories put on the engines.

Front shot of the engines linked together
(http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r98/isiahstites/Vesco%20Liner/100_1815.jpg)

Back shot of the engines linked together via the huge motor plate. You see the spockets on the back of the engines, I am assuming this is for linking the engines and the belt pulleys must be for the blowers.

Sockjohn, here are few more shots of the neck. I looked at it closely today and with four different supports/connections to the main chassis I do not see how it could flex much if any. And yes the riders legs do go around each side of the front wheel.

Kent gave me these pictures today while I was at the shop. I put them through my picture program and cleaned them up quite a bit. I believe these are pictures from Rick Vesco's personal collection.

If anyone has any pictures of this streamliner please let us know, it would be helpful in regards to the small details of the liner.

Thanks,
Scott

Kent, Sum's home is in Blanding, Utah -- a dot on the map that would take some awfully strong imagining to call a "city".  The nearest real city is...umn,. unh, ahhh, there's no city nearby.  That's how far out he is.

Getting you here and eating lobster (lake Powell lobster, of course) has two benifits to me.  One I'll get my lakester done and two maybe you won't fit in your streamliner anymore and will be looking for a new driver!!!

..........and here I thought you were telling me that you were going to take weight out of the car.........,

I see that there were provisions to change the shock/spring rate if needed.  Now I don't feel so alone.

Was the front wheel-well enclosed or did salt enter the cockpit on a run??

I hope to see that in person someday,

Sum, old guys get forgetful over the course of a couple of days.... huh.....

Wish I has just bought airplane tickets to go see it at the party tomorrow instead of working on the N20 for the time machine....  Looks really good.

Thanks, that is what I needed to see, now I can sleep nights.  Seems you are "loaded" with good info (http://www.cybergifs.com/faces/wink3.gif).,

Sum

Did they use the Yamaha OW1 race engines in the liner or just regular modified 650's?

Don and Rick had a Yamaha dealership, If you look on page 1 of this post, reply#14, look at the top picture.... if you look in the background, to the guys right sholder, you will see a bike liner partially under a tarp....that liner is "big red".. it was the liner that Don had the 2 "TD250" and then 2 "TR350" 2 stroke Yam motors...Rick built this liner in '69 and decided to use Yamaha's brand new fangeled 4 stroke twin motors.... they were mildly tuned to handle the "Pepco" superchargers...Finishing the wireing, cabling, then installing fenders and the bodywork tonight. Tomorrow we will build the crate, buy the beer, pizza and then party... hopefully we'll see ya'all tomorrow

Here are a few shots of the liner leaving the upholestery shop this evening and headed to Randy Nelsons shop to have all of the throttle cables made up and then back over to Kent's for an all nighter to get the liner finished up so it can be packed up and shipped out on Friday.

Kent, I just want to thank you and your wife for at great little evening last night. The vesco bike is awesome, alittle before my time, but not by much. Also a big thanks from my boys Carson and Logan (7 1/2 & 6 1/2 yrs old) They just might be the only non Vesco's to sit in the riders sit, and for Scott for snapping some photos for me. This will surely help pass some of their dad's and grandpa's racing enthusiasum down the line.
For those could not make it down to AirTech's shop yesterday missed out on a beautiful resteration job, my hats off to Kent and crew for a top notch job. Thanks Eric Eyres

We went through 12 pizza's, 5 bags of candy and a crap load of beer and soda... It was a pretty good time... i finaly chased Keith lynas, Danno, and Paul out around 11pm...... the liner came out fantastic, i dont want to let her go...but wait, were not done yet...today we start building the crate....stay tuned....
