Title: Maxton, April, Where to stay
Post by: jlmccuan on November 16, 2007, 01:54:07 PM
We are making our plans to be at Maxton in April of '08.  Do the hotels fill up?  Where is a nice place to stay and be around for evening gatherings?

First of all go to the ECTA website (there's a link on the homepage of landracing.com) and search that site 'til you find the page that has a listing of lodging at Maxton/Laurinburg.

The most popular place is Pine Acres Motel -- a mom-and-pop place where we hang out - have a pool party some nights, often have barbecue and get-together on Saturday nights, and racers get something like 10% off list price.  They commonly sell out -- so get your reservations a month or two in advance.

Let's see -- the Clinton Inn isn't as bad as its' reputation.  Nancy and I have stayed there once or twice and it's on a price par with Pine Acres -- but there's not nearly as much charisma.  No get togethers.  Unh, the Jameson used to be a bit more friendly to us than they are now, and I know of a family or two that's given up staying there.

Yeah, try to get into the Pine Acres.  We stayed in the "old" section of the motel last meet -- it wasn't all that bad, no matter what people tell you.  The new part is a titch nicer -- but whatever, the party's on at Pine Acres.  Reservations:  1 800 348 8242.  Put on your southern accent when you call, and ALWAYS address the person on the other end of the line as "Sir" or "Ma'am", as the case may be.

Well, you'll just sound like a cornball but they'll appreciate the sentiment. No one in the South wants anyone to pretend to be Southern or something they're not. We just don't like people coming in our backyard and treating us like our accents are shorthand for stupid and all of us live in trailers with camaros on blocks out front.
Sir and Ma'am is just good manners and good advice.

The Holiday Inn Express is a few blocks north next to the comfort inn too.

Reservations made.  Now all I have to do is build the car.  lol  Guess if I don't get the car done I can always run the tow vehicle.

Her daily driver is an Aurora with the audobahn option.  It goes to 140+ for sure.  Thought about bringing it along.

If I'm reading the rule book correctly you folks could get your D [126-149] licenses easily if you kept it under 135 [roll bar/cage required above that].  Good way to get a start, see how the meet works as participants, and have fun going fast without having to worry about blue lights in the mirror.

That was the reasoning behind the case I know about, driver is now into the 170's with a dedicated race roadster.  Know his wife knows about her new car "trials" now, still haven't gotten the full story if she knew his full intent prior to his trip...........

Our challenge to ourselves is to get the safety gear added to the car, drive it to Maxton, run the meet, and drive it back home.  We will have a support vehicle with trailer following us to help with the inevitible troubles we will have and, in a worst case, trailer us.

I just called the Pine Acres Motel and was told that they won't take reservations until January. Is that the usual procedure for all of them or just Pine Acres?

We used Comfort Inn, got the reservation made, and she even already knew about the ECTA discount.

You guys get a discount and we get the shaft in Wendover.  And here I always thought people were friendlier in the west,

Years ago they liked us in Wendover, of course there were a lot less people and a lot fewer rooms.  And only a few Morgamblers ventured over to speedweek because they knew the town would be full of gearheads and most of the rooms would be full, and they could always gamble next weekend.  Then the casinos started being bought out, got bigger and they figured out that they made more money the other 51 weeks a year... the rest is history...
To make up for lost revenue, they raised the rates during speedweek, to the weekend rate, then they raised it more, then they stopped taking reservations unless you were registered as one of their regular gamblers or part of one of the special gambling events they started during speedweek to fill the vacant rooms.
They make a lot more money from gamblers than from renting rooms.  Who do you think makes the casino more money, the maids or the dealers...
We track in salt, occasionally rebuild parts and raise their expenses...
I hope the scta's initiative to improve relations works
If the hotels lower their rates to racers, all the rooms the scta buys will cost less, and maybe they will lower our costs instead of raising them...

1st time at Maxton I stayed in Lumberton (Taking I95 its about 5 exits north before you get off for Maxton) hotel called my room.  2 van full of heads were circling me and a buddy's 1000cc bike.  We came out with barefoot and with weapons, albeit none of which were firearms.  But 2 people vs 2 vans full of people.  They got in their van but weren't running for their lives.  Hotel manager let us lock the bikes up right in front of the lobby.  Called the cops, they took a report.  Days Inn or Holiday inn or something.

Another time I was so tired since a tractor trailer wrecked and I95 was shut down for hours (no sleep for the Sat race) that Sat evening I crashed at Knights Inn.  Left my gear in my p/u bed.  Got to Maxton Sunday morning to realize it was missing.  Boots, leathers, tire pump.  Others loaned me some gear which was cool.

Lesson learned:  Lumberton is pretty ghetto.  I've chilled their still at times but I work a deal w/whoever is on that evening shift and park my locked, covered, alarmed truck & trailer right up to their window.  I sleep better but not as good as in Laurinburg/Maxton.

We usually stay at the Comfort Inn, good place, never a problem, and I recommend staying there, but I have stayed at the Holiday Inn and it was ok too. That said, we always leave the bike and trailer at the track. I've never had a problem like Shiphteey at any hotel, but I feel my rig is much safer at the track.

One other option that I haven't seen any of our august respondents mention is that primitive camping is FREE on the grounds.  So - if you've got facilities in your rig - the track's not a bad place to spend an evening.

If you're tent camping - watch the little piles of sand - they're anthills, and the little buggers BITE!

That's why I feel safe leaving my bike at the track, a number of racers camp there so you don't have to worry about outsiders messing with your equipment. The folks who camp out there keep a good watch on things at the track.
