Title: Tuning the Studebaker for Speed Week
Post by: GH on July 08, 2007, 01:09:45 PM
We ran the Studebaker on an airport runway yesterday, it is 4000 feet long, we could run first and second gears up to 6900 rpm. Scott Clark for Spectre industries was riding in the passenger seat with the laptop pushing the keys, he has it performing at peake performance. Mike Collison was on the ground with a radio, he was in contact with the pilots, we had to get out of the way a few times. The session went real good until an electric fan shot craps and blew a fuse, I did not take any extra ones with us. See you all on the salt.

Sounds good Gary.  I think this is the year for your entry into the "2 club"  :-D .

I'll be back there in a couple weeks and will give you a call.  Maybe we can have lunch.  The guy with the fastest car buys  8-) ,

Sum

Just saw your site and noticed you went to twin turbos.  Your gonna miss the old sound.  Nice car, my dads cousin used to race a studie at bonneville a while back.  Good luck to you all, and I hope you guys break that weak record of ours.  Not sure if we will be going back to AA for a while.

You're right about the sound being different. Doesn't have that hard hitting sound, but it sure does run better. Those turbos are awsome. We have to break your record and excede 245 to get into the 2 club. Thanks for your kind words.

We are in the process of loading all the junk, buying all the spare parts for the tow truck and race car that my account at O'riellys Auto Parts Store will allow. We will be leaving noon Wednesday with the Buick and the Studebaker. Good luck to all, see you on the salt.

Here is the latest news on the Studebaker #787. We dropped an exhaust valve on the 3 rd. run at speed week. The valve springs were 280 lb seat pressure when new 3 or 4 years ago, they now measured 260 lb seat pressure. The turbos were generating about 60 psi of back pressure which caused the valves to float. Ordered a new piston from JE, new inconel exhaust valves, 330 lb valve springs and new 10 degree keepers. Will put on 60 mm external waste gates and try again for the red hat at the World Finals in October. Scratch that, will get the red hat!!!!!
