Hello Racers!
Speed Week at Bonneville starts Saturday and we hope everyone has a Safe, Fun, and Fast Event.
The 2020 Maine Event is still a go so we wanted to reach out to go over Covid. There is a lot of misinformation out there so we have gathered this and distilled it from the state. We also have a medical advisor that has been spearheading Covid policy for Maine?s largest employer and she is constantly up to date on best practice.
If you are traveling from another state or many states away, there are NO roadblocks anywhere and states are NOT requiring testing or quarantine to travel through. You are free to hit the open road.
Maine has a mask rule. If you are within 6 feet of others, inside or out, you are required to wear a mask.
Our rulebook has hundreds of rules designed to keep all of you safe and we would like to thank all of you for faithfully following them for over a decade. This year we have one new rule that is not in the book.
We require all participants, crews, and families to wear a mask/shield/face covering/helmet when you leave your personal pit stall. In your stall, we will not require masks. Like all of our other rules, this is not open to debate.
The pits will look different this year. Please be sure to check with Registration before you start unloading. Due to state crowd size rules, we will have to segregate the pits into zones.
Please check with your hotel to be sure what their procedures are.
There will be NO spectators at the event. You can bring people with you, we treat them as crew.
Please go to the section that pertains to you for more information.
MAINE ? NEW HAMPSHIRE ? VERMONT ? NEW YORK ? CONNECTICUT ? NEW JERSEY
There is no testing or quarantine requirement at this time. You may come and go as you please anywhere in the state.
ALL OTHER STATES
I want to start by making this very clear. OUR EVENT IS IN FULL COMPLIANCE WITH THE STATE?S QUARANTINE RULES. This means that you can be in quarantine at the event.
Now the details:
Maine requires all people entering the state to do 1 of 3 things.
Self-quarantine for 14 days Which you can do at the event.
Have a negative test within 3 days of entering the state to move about freely. (but you can choose option 1 instead)
Take a test within 3 days of entering Maine and quarantine until the negative result is returned. Then you can move about freely. (Or choose option 1)
The State?s self-quarantine rules are pretty thin -
You may be outside
You can stay in a Hotel
You can bring a camper
You are asked to wear a mask around others
You are asked to not go shopping in stores and not to frequent restaurants.
That?s it.
Accommodations and food:
Hotels are now taking reservations. Please be sure to check with them as to any special rules they have in place.
The bunker Inn is located on the base. It was opened a couple of years ago. They are happy to house our racers. 207.325.6072
Many restaurants have take out and the Caribou inn will deliver to your room. We will get a list together and post it at Registration.
We will have the Young Marines as our vendor for lunches as well.
Take care, be well, and lets race!
Joe, Tim and the gang.

I can get people race fuel if needed as long as I know a week in advance. Basically if there is some needed, have Tim message me by this weekend.
-
So there are NO spectators at this event unless you are part of, or with, a crew. Am I getting that right?

That is correct.

We had a good opening session this afternoon: 83 runs with many runs over 200 mph (thanks in part to a "friendly" tailwind). Two cars ran at 250 mph with many others exceeding personal bests. It looks like the rest of the week will be great racing weather too.
-
Quick recap of the last two days: yesterday (Thursday) went pretty well. Weather was warm with no wind to speak of, we had 150-ish runs with a couple of mechanical breakdowns and one track oil-down. Fast speed was 261 mph by Bob Keselowski with his Charger (I think it was Bob and not his brother - someone correct me please if I'm wrong as I don't have the run sheets in front of me).
Today was a bit slower: always somebody at the line but nobody was in any particular hurry as there was a fairly constant breeze (12 to 20 mph crosswind) which meant a lot of folks chose to wait. We had a couple of new "2-club" members who were quite happy. I'm sure some folks on slower machines had more runs than they could ever hope for. All in all, things went pretty well.

Any word on how Jack Gifford's belly tank is doing....
-
I know he made some runs but I'm not sure of the speeds. I'll check today and post when I can.
-
Jack ran a 140.985 this morning.

Jack must have gone at least 150 to get the hat Marcia presented to him. I'll post a link to the run logs when Tim puts it up.

Our team had a great time at Loring The Rons Hobby Shop special roadster records set at the event are the fastest roadster records to date at Loring. The records set on Wednesday with my son driving 206.768 at the mile and 229.088 at the mile and a half. Thursday my run with a high cross wind 204.194 at the mile and 224.680 at the mile and a half. Friday the winds continued to be high with cross wind speeds of 20 plus however even in the wind team driver Jeff Arnett was able to run over 200 MPH to gain entry into the LTA 200 MPH club setting another record all told Jeff set four records in the car.
Total records set by the team 8 in three days not bad for a small less than 300 cube old 1950 Ford Flathead block with a supercharged overhead valve head conversion burning gasoline.

Ronnie, your car looked and sounded great at the mile. Congratulations on a great event.

Sounds like a class that Stan Back would endorse. lol8

We have a few in car videos and a few shots leaving the line when Laura get them on YouTube I will post them here.

Ronnie and his crew spent a day with Jack Gilford getting this belly tank sorted out and crewed it for him for the day. I doubt he could have made a pass without their help.
Joe

Jack's a great guy! I saw a lot of people helping. Here's Kirk Asslyn towing him in.
-
Between racers and LTA officials I had MUCH help at Loring, without which I'd have gotten nowhere. A huge THANK YOU to all those who helped!
I'll certainly do my best to bring some crew members to future events.
-
It's good to know you can show up at the track, short handed and get the help you need.
Besides all the usual volunteers, Jorden Hanson teching cars when he really wanted to be racing.
My personal favorites, Bob Gobiel and Frank Walka encouraging me to get in Bob's fantastic car. And Joe Dalys words "You came down the middle like a freight train, pulled the chute... perfect!"
-
Does anyone know who the photographers were who were taking pictures at the event? Especially interested in top end pictures.
-
One photographer I spoke with has a publication (North Country Race News?). I think if you look on facebook you'll find his info and some pictures from this year's LTA Harvest Event.
-
That would probably be Tom Hale https://upnorthmotorsports.bdnblogs.com/ He's also on FB. The other photographer there this year was Stephen Rappaport who posts his work to the Loring Timing Association FB page. He spent a day at the timing trailer (which is at the 1-mile timing lights).
-
Thanks, Saw the Tom Hale photos on the LTA Facebook previously but couldn't find any of the others. I'm really looking for a shot of my car with the chute deployed. May have to request it next year.
-
Just ask, someone will make sure it happens.
