Title: Will it happen - views?
Post by: neandethal on March 28, 2020, 06:23:25 AM
Hi All,

Trying to be organised and travelling from the UK, i booked our airline tickets early to get a good price, replied to Dora at Motel 6 to book our room, and now i'm wondering if i have got it all wrong.
What are peoples views on 1. Will speedweek happen. 2. Will it be at the dates shown 3. Will non-US citizens be able to attend.
thanks for any views, cheers Ian

At this point I think that there are only vague guesses and opinions. Nobody knows much of anything about anything for sure.

What scares me is this mantra of "flattening the curve"
Statistically, what happens when you flatten the curve?  You cannot suppress the area too much, a friend, Doctor who is in hard quarantine due to exposure has an opinion. And it is not 2 weeks.

Stay safe, the SCTA is not a fortune teller, they will do their best, be patient.

Hey Ian.....definitely no where near out of the woods or even a point where anyone could make a decision.  I'm in Boise idaho about 6 hrs from the salt and we have numbers of covid 19 growing everyday. No signs of slowing down.  Just fyi.  Probably going to come down to last minute decisions.  Cheers

The social distancing is the easy part.  Avoiding contamination from surfaces is the hard part.  Yesterday I needed some work clothes.  Put a plastic bag over my hand before opening the shop door.  Pointed out the items I needed and asked the clerk to pull them off the rack, ring them up, then bag them.  Handed him the credit card and he gave it back.  All this with the plastic bag on my hand.  Carried the bag out by pushing the shop door open with my shoulder and put the bag in the truck.  Drove home after disenfecting my hands.  Put another plastic bag on my hand.  Carried the clothes bag upstairs and tossed it in a bedroom.  Let it sit there three days so any virus on it will die.

Can you imagine doing this scale of effort while traveling abroad?  I can't.  It is such a PITA.  That, more than anything, calms down the racing scene until the virus goes away of they get a vaccine.

Another problem I am already experiencing due to this virus is a weakening supply chain. Many companies we use for race car parts still supply but those manufacturers who supply them are shuttered or not shipping. Even when we get the OK to go back to work, it will take time for manufacturing to ramp up again. It will take months for products to be made and shipped to distributors to restock their shelves. I have been trying to find a limited slip diff for my transaxle. None available here in the US, new or used, at least that I can find. To get a new one is impossible as Quaief, the manufacturer, is closed until UK government gives them the OK to open. So, how long will it take after manufacturing begins before my diff is available? Who knows. It may certainly be longer than I have to be ready for September. What a mess.

On Youtube Dr Price  in NYC says recent information shows 99% of covid 19 cases come from touching contaminated surfaces and then touching your face . That simple .

Hi all,
I am in exactly the same boat, having paid for my flights and accomodation.
The issue is, around now I should have been finalising the shipping of the car.
I am very much playing a waiting game at the moment, my hope now (I'm not trying to upset anyone here) is that the BLM make an early decision one way or the other. It would suit me if the event were now cancelled as the current situation has caused an unexpected drain on my resources.
The hope is that America is still not allowing people from the UK in so that both my flights and accomodation can be deffered for a year.
Still the car will be a lot cleaner than last time!

Ian, consider the average age of the racers and folks who hold the events.  They will be staying in until it is safe to go out or until they have a vaccine.  Any race held this year might draw a very small crowd.  We do not know when "safe times" will come and things are getting worse.  I had a trip planned to the UK in May and had to cancel a lot of things.  There was less penalty from asking for a refund early.  Also, get your refund while the refunders are still in business.

Bo said:  "...consider the average age of the racers...".

8 or 10 years or so ago I ran a poll asking the age of the folks on the Forum.  I came up with a few dozen responses, I think it was, and the MEDIAN age of the group was

58 years!

No, the survey wasn't especially rigorously designed nor guaranteed accurate, but it did show that we ain't spring chickens any more.

Personally,

I think the event out on the Salt would be least of my concerns.

The hotels, bars, eatery's, that is another story.

Chances are if we could camp out on the salt, with all the UV during the day we would be fine.

Think we could get the BLM to buy that?

Doubt it, John. BLM still thinks we are the cause of salt depletion.

Way to early to even try and speculate. We need more data on how the virus is transferred, etc. Everyday something new is on the news about this virus.

Be patient and give the people in the know more time to figure out this virus.

No one would want this speedweek to be someones last because the were infected with a virus, that as of today there is no vaccine or cure. I would rather it be canceled, and hopefully by next year they would have a vaccine or cure.

Today I had to make a trip down to Utah to bring back a truck. I took a mask, gloves & sanitizing spray & planned to go down, load my car & drive it home with no stops. I figured the traffic would be light since most people would self quarantined. NOT!!!!
Obviously nobody down there is taking this China Virus seriously because the whole place was as busy as Christmas eve & I was the only person with a mask & gloves...Period!  :?
I really needed milk so thought I would swing by Walmart in Brigham City (my usual stop heading home) & if it wasn't too busy I'd nip in & grab a gallon. F^#k me running.... the parking lot was full & I could see at least a hundred people to-ing & fro-ing with not even one mask in sight. Needless to say, I didn't even get out of the truck.
I don't know whether it's ignorance or arrogance or a new truckload of $hit paper just arrived or maybe they've been watching too much Trump but the lack of self protection was frightening to me!

No doubt in my mind Sid, why I used the wink thingy.  I was initially shocked at the amount of loss in crust thickness between my '72 safari and when I finally got back in'08.  Then even more so when I started hearing from many more regular attendees than I say it was a great year, much better than quite a few just previous.  I think there were a couple of 2 in a row cancellations due to wet salt conditions in between '72 and '08 that disprove any "give it a rest, wait and see" approaches by any hired gun "expert geologists"..  Said it before and I'll say it again - can't permanently remove ingredients from a recipe and expect to put the same tasting food on the table.

If the virus can find it's way out here to the territories of Western MA, and spread the havoc it has, it is certain to do the same real quick everywhere.  Anyone who doesn't think so might do well to buy a cowboy hat and little pick hammer to dream with.

'Nuff said, rant over, my mind clear for another day :-D

I spoke with a friend of mine last night, he drives Semi truck. He had a run from Utah to Elko Nv, on Thursday. He stopped in Wendover for Fuel and he said that all the Casinos and Hotel parking lots all have huge concrete barriers at the entrance ways, and there is Security making sure those don't get crossed. He said on his next run out there, he would grab some pictures of this.

He said the the truck stop was open, but very limited on what food items and such could be purchased.

Thought I would let you know

Here we were one of the first states to get the virus.  It was in the general population in mid February.  We self isolated in late February and the surrounding area, that is all I know about 'cause I do not go anywhere, is taking this very seriously. Only 21 deaths in Oregon so far.  You can draw your own conclusions about whether or not these measures work.

What's your take on the stupidity down there Clay, or anybody in UT, you're part of that mess?
I'm about speechless to what I found!!!! If there was an air strike on Hill as I was driving by it would've made about as much sense!
The endless line of traffic coming north to infest the mountains around here & shop in our little town was alarming to me even before I got down into the mess. I was looking at it all & thinking "what's the percentage?". :?

Just read the subsequent thread about cases etc. - sorry;

I was a bit behind on this thread, I read about age and responded. Not taking anything away from the seriousness here but then again a lot of people do not seem to be taking it seriously (as reported herein) - the UK government has done a pretty good job in the circumstances but people still seem to think the weekends do not count and head out if the weather is nice.

Here in SE Michigan we're in week 3 of the official lockdown, but my company shut down the week before. So I've been working from home for a month already.

I went out to get some milk and fuel the other day (first time off my property in 3 weeks) and was astounded to see the sheer number of people just out and about shopping in general. There was even local talk of people buying TV's at Walmart!

I normally go to my local rural (as rural as we get in SE MI) Ace store to get supplies. The parking lot was stuffed full and people were walking about not masks or gloves! So I didn't even stop, I circled back out and found a nearby deserted gas station.

I guess that why MI cases are going up without a hint of this "curve flattening".

I hope to see you on the salt, but honestly, even if everything opened up now I don't know we could be ready in time. I can't even get my truck serviced to haul the trailer as the local service guy has run out of parts.

Hope Speedweek is not canceled until BNI feels it can't be held.

Speed Week is 4 months away and things could get better but if motels and restaurants are closed no way.

A little more time on entry discount or full refund if meet not held? Might be policy now?

The 2020 Entry Blank states that if the meet is cancelled, you get a refund less $100 "processing fee".

But, last week I read (and then trashed) the minutes of the latest Board meeting which, as I remember, stated they would refund the whole thing this year.  One of you guys have the minutes ? is this correct?
Title: Re: Will it happen - views?
Post by: johnneilson on April 10, 2020, 03:07:14 PM
Stan,

no mention of refund in the minutes (unapproved)

There is mention of no late penalty for Speedweek this year, if had etc.

The $100 retention is usually to cover printing/prepping/ancillary costs (late cancellation, as in August)

I would imagine if cancelled prior to printing and merchandise full refund, except the street roadster class.

No problem.

We're such a draw, we get paid to appear (rain out or not).

I understand you V4-F-B-G-F guys have to pay a premium because of the expense of collecting your greasy parts from the courses.  Lucky for the association, the usual carnage is in the first mile and can be driven around by those that use the whole 5 miles.

When I read the pre entry form heres what it says about refunds.   If the event is cancelled by the SCTA/BNI because of weather or course conditions prior to Aug. 8, entry fee will be refunded less $100 processing charge. So I wonder if the event is cancelled for any other reason say because of a pandemic looks like a full refund would be in order.   :|

Speaking candidly, I'm taken aback by the degree of pessimism over something happening that's more than three months away, as well as the level of alarm expressed in so many of these posts. This really will pass and the VAST majority of those who of us who contact it will won't. Let's keep up the social distancing and try living as normally as possible. :)

QikNip:

Even if everybody were to go back to work tomorrow, it will take months for things to normalize. So, concern about a meet happening in August is not misplaced. So many things will play into whether SpeedWeek or World of Speed is held besides what those two organizations have to say. I am genuinely concerned as I think many racers are. I especially feel for International teams that have considerable resources on the line, many of which are non refundable.

I don?t mean to be negative but facts are what they are.

From the SCTA Facebook page:
The 2020 SW Pre-Entry Date Has Been Extended Until May 15th.
If you would like your entry to be in the SW Program you must either have it in the SCTA/BNI Office by the 15th or submitted online by 12:00 p.m. (Pacific Standard Time) on the 15th.
If you do not want to be in the SW Program, you can still enter online after the 15th.

Love it or Leave it, it sure brings in a lot of money to Northern Nevada.
There are a lot of non-burners who do pretty well off the freaks.
Local law enforcement and small businesses will feel the pinch.
I think Nevadans will welcome their money again in 2021. BLM will be broke.

Right you are. This isn't going to over in a couple of weeks. A virus mutates, so last weeks wonder drug may nor work next week. Expect another round this coming winter. I know many Medical Doctors and Nurses, and we talk about coronavirus. I was born before WW II, so I'm in the prime age group to die during this pandemic. If they tell me to do something, I do.

It is pretty apparent that we have all been affected by this virus already whether we have contracted it or not.
From what I have seen, I wouldn't be trusting the bureaucrats (BLM) to do anything competent.

I don't see being out on the salt any riskier than being in a park, a walking trail, the beach, etc....
The hotels, restaurant's, are of course another matter.

Personally, I could get by with just the bend in the road, the gas station and Carmen's Black and White.

Couple things I have no answers for (and are not needed at this time) . . .

What are the restriction policies in a 2-state town?

And, supposedly just guessing, did the generous casino and hotel owners continue to pay their staffs and, if and when, they reopen, will there be any one to staff them left in town?

Also, in my thoughts, how different the Australian venture is when we hear about all the problems here with the hotels ? just 5 miles from the action.

Wow!  Imagine that!  Only a little more than 3 months away and it looks great!

Make you plans.  Figure it all out.  And then, 3 or 4 days before the event, check again.  Or show up and see, when you're there, it's shitt.

Every year we go thru this same old dance.  Listen to the music, sing along, sway with the rhythm, it's wonderful (or not).

Either plan to go, if you have to, get ready (things will still be ready 2 or 3 months later), and stand back (Stan Back), and see what happens.

Where was the famous quote from?  (". . . and you're only jerking off.).

I did get a notice from BNI that they are extending registration until May 15, so it sounds like they are trying to make Speed Week 2020 happen. Sure hope the salt keeps drying and hardening.

Yes, I got that poster looking email with forms as well. It says online to the 15th, but at the track after. In contrast to the Facebook post I referenced above (reply #50) which says online will be available after the 15th. Leads to the obvious "which is it?" question. I asked, no response so far.

JoAnn responded and says that online entry will be open up to the meet. late entry will not be in the program of course and I assume that the increased fee applies (didn't ask that and she did no say in her response)

Am I the only one who thinks continuing to take money for Speedweek with the uncertainty that it will happen is irresponsible? The virus is not going to disappear by then. There IS the certainty that some, perhaps many, who attend speedweek will be a carrier of Covid-19. Is SCTA going to require testing of everyone who enters the salt flats? What about the close proximity of all the participants in the hotels and restaurants? There is no way to social distance yourself there.

BMST and at least one other racing venue have cancelled due to the uncertainty of what the next 3 months will bring. I think that was a smart decision and in concern of the safety of the participants.  Will we have another second wave of newer strains of Covid, will there be a magic vaccination developed, or will the loosening up of restrictions of some states cause even more wide-spread contamination? I certainly don't know, you don't know, and SCTA doesn't either.

Just think of all the entrants who have to plan months ahead and spend tons of money to get to Bonneville with the odds being that it will be cancelled shortly due to even more restrictions because of a laxity of precaution now. They stand to lose a ton of money.

I normally am an optimist, but when things are so uncertain, data is so unreliable, and politicians care more about revenue than safety, I want to err on the side of caution.

So SCTA thinks continuing to take money is "Opening up America"  Tell the virus that.

My oldest daughter works is a social worker at our local hospital intake.  This means I get a periodic lecture about how to prevent the Red China flu.  Based on what she says, social distancing is the easy part of prevention.  Transmission from contaminated surfaces is much more difficult to deal with.

She, and her husband get home from work, shopping, or whatever they do in the outside world.  They leave their shoes outside of the house.  They get inside and strip off their clothes and put them in the washer and take a shower.  Then they get into their safe and clean clothes.  Then they take an alcohol soaked rag and clean the doorknobs and other things they touched upon entrance.

Everything coming into the house is disinfected or put out in the garage for at least three days.  That means, the cap or hat, belt, wallet, credit cards, money, car keys, etc are all sanitized with an alcohol wipe.

In addition to all of this, they pay attention to not touching their faces all day when out of the house, as well as social distancing and wearing a mask in critical locations.

I am sorta lazy and retired so I stay home and use carb cleaner for disinfecting things.  Otherwise I follow their protocol.

Someone told me this a long time ago "You are crazy or you do not fully understand the situation."  The more I learn about this virus the more wary I am.

I have not seen a time limit on the online sign up. Might go well into the season so comes down to 1) you want your name in the book or 2) the extra $ for late sign up. Either way if the meet is cancelled late, there are expenses done and track prep and etc that they will want covered so not full refunds in any case. If for some reason they cancel like day after tomorrow I'd expect (but not holding breath) full refund. Think of all the money you are saving on gas and stuff staying home (well, many of us anyway) and not going out to eat. More than the entry you get to eat...... :clap

Check with Warren Buffet. He's selling his airline stock, at a loss. https://money.usnews.com/investing/news/articles/2020-05-02/berkshire-sells-entire-stakes-in-us-airlines-buffett If the economy is so bad that Buffet is bailing, gambling may well take a big hit. In a world where airline flights are down 95%, where will NHRA, NASCAR and Indycar get sponsorship money?

Researchers double U.S. COVID-19 death forecast, citing eased restrictions

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A newly revised coronavirus mortality model predicts nearly 135,000 Americans will die from COVID-19 by early August, almost double previous projections, as social-distancing measures for quelling the pandemic are increasingly relaxed, researchers said on Monday...

...The revised IHME projections coincided with disclosure of an internal Trump administration forecast predicting a surge in COVID-19 cases killing 3,000 Americans a day by the end of May, up from a current daily toll that a Reuters tally places at around 2,000.

That projection, first reported by the New York Times and confirmed by a Reuters source, also forecast about 200,000 new coronavirus cases each day by the end of the month, up from the current rate of about 25,000 cases every 24 hours.

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-health-coronavirus-usa-idUSKBN22G1T3

L.A. Times says: As of May 4, 7:07pm 56,134 confirmed COVID 19 cases and 2287 deaths in California.

Reality doesn't care about politics.

This is what John is talking about.

Tom G.

Speed Week Update #1 ? 5/7/2020:

We had one major choice in front of us this year concerning the Bonneville National?s Speed Week 2020. Should we keep our plans in motion or should we stop and cancel it due to Covid19?

After much discussion, we have decided to proceed with our plans and we hope by August we will have a better handle on safety. It is now the beginning of May and we are still uncertain, but pushingahead. The volunteer lists are in place and entries are coming in. Safety and management is our top priority.

The SCTA & BNI remain optimistic, but we understand that this year more than any in recent history has given us many hurdles to overcome. Generally, our most pressing concern would be the salt condition, but this year our first concern is the virus and safety.

We are currently discussing and making plans on how to keep everyone protected. This includes the racers, crew, spectators and of course our long list of volunteers.

As we move forward, each and every individual will have to carefully weigh the risk factor for themselves and others in their crew. Everyone must understand what we are up against and they need to make their own personal decision on whether to attend or not. ?Social Distancing? is now a part of our daily lives, that plus good old common sense will go a long way toward keeping everyone safe.

We will keep everyone updated. At this point, Bonneville Speed Week is still a Go until we have a definitive No Go from the state of Utah or other sources. We cannot forecast when or if we will have to change plans.

Until then, we hope to see you on the salt.

SW Update - 5/12/2020

We have GREAT news! The Health Dept. has given us permission to apply for our Speed Week Permit!

This is an extremely positive development and it paves the way for all of us to get back to the Salt this year!

Speaking of Salt, we have just had a promising update on salt conditions. We will probably be able to start the grooming process within the next couple of weeks. It?s almost completely dry & it?s smooth! Stay tuned for those updates!

Not that anyone really needs a reminder, but please keep in mind as we prepare for Speed Week we still need to practice ?social distancing? & everything that goes with it. We will do our best to provide a safe environment, but we will need your help. Common sense & consideration for others goes a long way!

That?s about all for now. We will let you all know as soon as we get official approval on our permit.

Until then cross your fingers & maybe even do a little salt dance, just in case!........................

Ron Main sent this along for me to post:

"Welcome to Wendover"

No one is denying the importance of stopping the coronavirus.

However, we have over two months before we give our final decision.  We will be monitoring all the all progress being made on treatments and the other reopenings, along with the salt conditions in Wendover.  It is not about having 100% safety; life just does not work that way.

The Wendover Nugget and Red Garter Is Proud to announce that plan to open June 4.

The Rainbow and Montego Bay is Proud to announce they will opening June 4.

The Pepper Mill is Proud to announce They will be opening on June 5.

Remaining in shutdown also has risks as it can cripple millions without jobs, income, losing our homes and savings and causing a vicious prolonged depression.  US sales fell 46%, US unemployment is at 25%, and auto production dropped over 70% in April. Airlines' passenger traffic has fallen to zero.

Click https://wendoverfun.com/

They will have Employee Temperature Screening, and Face Coverings, along with Guest Temperature Screening Hand sanitizer dispensers and Physical Distancing.

https://wendoverfun.com/resort/healthsafety

Most of the population has not been infected, and of course is susceptible.  But, if we decide to have the event in August, at least we can allow for the participants to make their own decisions.  Once the final decision is made each participant will need make their own personal decision due to age, physical condition, and travel requirements.

Respectfully,

Ron Main

We, Huntimer Photography, will be there with the new calendar and our car The Salt Circus.
I will wear my mask to make the safety checkers happy, but I will extend my hand to shake hands with friends and maybe a hug or two.
Some will say I am crazy and taking chances, my reply will be 'yes I am' I have a higher chance of getting hurt on the salt then from a virus.
But for those that choose to stay home I respect your decision, you can contact us for your calendar needs

I sure hope Speed Week happens. So much talk circulating about new spikes in COVID-19 and stricter shutdowns. It looks like a race between governmental dictates and Speed Week.

Well the 7707 Lucas Oil Landspeed Team have had to withdraw. We will not be there. The race car is ready and in Los Angeles but the US won?t let us Brits in. So frustrating. It doesn?t matter what way we try there is currently no way we can get in to the US.

Maybe see you later in the year or 2021 or 2022...who knows?

Dirt and pavement racing must teach you about track conditions and how to deal with them and transfering that knowledge to Bville,

Tire pressure, tire size, spring rates, slick tracks ECT.

How would that car react with 60 lbs of tire pressure and solid suspension?

We are required to wear masks here when ordering beer at the bar.  We can take them off when we get to our table.  Last night I was drinking with some folks I did not know and all of us were a bit nervous.  I kept my mask on and drank the beer with a straw.  It seems to be a safer option.
