Title: Home built CNC mill.
Post by: tauruck on November 12, 2018, 02:18:07 PM
I've been helping my friend Ian with his latest creation.
His second CNC milling machine. It's not for heavy duty
work but it's coming along nicely.

Fun project going on 200 yards from my house and i'm
learning new things every day from a guy that calls me uncle.

The guy is a genius. He builds high end sound systems he exports
for $35,000 per side. Not sure what it means but he builds his own
amplifiers from a bare PC board up. The wood work is mind blowing
too. Self taught and he just blows me away.

I do what I can to help like supplying steel bits and pieces plus welding.
He's trying to teach me Autodesk Autocad fusion 360 but he's having a hard time. :x

Check out pics of the progress.

I spend about 3 hours a day helping.
The dude drinks so much coffee.

I'll post some pics soon of the sound systems.
I think you guys will like his work.

That's going to be a beautiful looking piece of machinery and very useful as well.

That may be what you need to cut your throttle plates because the plate's going to have to be set up at an angle and then the circles cut vertically so you end up with the correct shape to fit in the throttle bore properly at the angle for idling. Throttle plates definitely aren't circles when laid flat.

It can be fun to have talented neighbours.

Thanks Peter. That plate had me going for a while.
I figured it out by looking at my Harley carb. :-D
I think I better make a few more plates for just in case.

Ian and I help each other a lot. Good friend and I'm learning
big time.

That looks like it's going to have a very large table area, but possibly not robust enough for heavy metal work, except for the large timing belt which one might use to drive a supercharger!  Is he going to use it to make speaker cabinets?

I have an older Rung Fu RF30 mill-drill which can be converted to ball screws and computer drive with stepper motors.  I could do the mechanical conversion, but then I would need a computer nerd to program the thing!

When I'm in Colorado, I just get my friend Doug to set up and run my CNC work. Will actually, I'm talented enough to change the billets and push the buttons.

Very nice start...I showed those pics to my Index and it hung it`s head in shame. But it does remind me of a thread on Metalmeet...A youngster was lamenting over going to work each day and spending 8 hours running high-zoot CNC equipment and then going home to his clapped out South Bend...One of the elder members reminded him that his fancy CNC machine was probably built using clapped out South Bends.   Indeed

Ian works mostly with Aluminum and wood.
The mill is for working plates and various timber
components. It's far from finished and he's used his manual
mill and lathe to produce the parts you see. Nothing heavy duty
but I could be wrong. Those ball screws are unreal. You hold it
vertically on the housing and it just goes on its own.

I can't wait to see it finished. The dude had a 3 micron lean on one
rail and he wouldn't stop until he corrected it. FUSSY!!!!!!!!!!. :-D

The machine is taking shape.

Ian says even high tensile bolts are out of shape
especially on the smaller diameter stuff. I never
believed him. 20 out of 100 passed his scrutiny.
We rolled them on a piece of glass and I was shocked.

Ian is sick of looking at bare Aluminum so he started painting parts.

The machine is coming together nicely and I've found work
for Ian from the off road guys starting in February.
The guy has been using a lathe and mill for maybe six months
but his CAD drawing is unbelievable.

The mill works.

First run. 40 pucks for a special application.
Flawless and I'm in awe. My friend is a genius.

I'm being schooled but I guess I won't graduate.
I was lost when he asked "Coffee".

I'm the marketing gofer guy. I can't take credit on the build except for using four airbrushes
to supply coolant. My idea and design.

Got lots of work for this puppy.

Niche market. Big shops won't do limited runs for obvious reasons.

We can. I'm going to buy that rubber brother.
