Looking forward to heading West next week. Any idea who might be attending? Not sure if entry list to be posted... Thanks, Woz
-
I'll be there!
GW
-
Monte - how is the WoS setup going?
Thanks in advance for all the efforts of you and your team!
GW
-
We started the course prep yesterday. We will be using the #1 course from Speedweek, with a change. We have moved the starting line one mile toward the interstate. We did this in an effort to provide the best salt possible though the timed sections.
We will use course #3 for our short course and 130/150 as well as the Volkswagens.
The salt is dry and smooth but still very thin. I look forward to a great World of Speed.
-
This was taken tonight just after the sun slipped behind the mountains.
-
No salt on tires... :-o
-
Monte - thx for the update.
Please clarify... you've moved the starting line back a mile, which I understand, but did you also move back the measured section or is there an additional run up mile?
GW
-
We moved everything back a mile. That means there is still a two mile run up to the timed sections.
The advantage is that it gives smoother and harder salt in all three miles of timing.
-
Nice job Monte!! Thanks to you and the whole crew for the effort you put out every year! Couldn't do it without you!! Checked out your video on youtube-looks promising!!  Gnomenator
-
Dan Wright sent this link to me. USFRA has a new device for salt grooming. Watch it work.

-
Will there be any companies like DJ Safety, Simpson, RJS, etc there this weekend?
Regards, Neil Tucson, AZ
-
That video was shot at the 5 mile on Speeweek course 3. As you can see the chrunchies are big and the salt crust paper thin. We did not make the new skid. It came from the BNI /SCTA group. It was however our first try at using it.
I plan to write much more about it after the meet is over. Some of it good, some not so.
I will post another video tomorrow showing course conditions where the vehicles will actually be making their runs come Friday.

Oops, I meant Niel.

I often wondered if a big roller like they use on blacktop would work out there to pack it all down? Has that been tried?
-
There's been a wheel packer out there for three or four years. SCTA/BNI got it to use. I forget the details - two axles with 5-6 tires each with a bed between for adding ballast (weight). I didn't see it while exploring this year - might have been parked behind one of the groves of trees or down in one of the ravines.
-
Perhaps in Coddington Canyon?
-
Coddington Canyon.... HAHA... I was there when that natural geological wonder was created.
GW
-
I wonder -- if I had taken the moment to mark the location of the Coddington Calamity on the GPS -- if I could find it, what's the canyon look like today? How has it healed, is it a permanent soft spot, etc... :?

I'd suggest you go search it out, but not with the new truck.
-
According to the BLM it's filled in with the "3ft" of salt we don't have.
Sid.
-
Flashpoint says they will be there. Late, but ready to get it right this time.
-
According to the Tow Trucks owner (Three involved) He had to pay the BLM six grand for the damage His trucks did trying to get the Circus Bus out of the Ravine.
I know this first hand as He hauled two loads consisting of My loaded truck, the second being My trailer and race car out to the pits after the motor seized up about three miles west of Smith's.
What a fu*king year that was. I spent five days getting a motor shipped from Phoenix, and Mike Wesche, Lionel Pitts and I spent two days after Speedweek on the salt installing the new motor in 100 + degree heat.
Oh, yeah, We had Rube and Goldberg (two of My crew) "fabricate" a push bar out of a friends spare trailer hitch mount, put it on the front of a ATV, pushed it off and ran 229 for My one and only pass of 2011. If You go to Speedweek 2011 on YouTube there is a short segment (look for a picture of My yellow Stude) being pushed off by the ATV and if You listen You will hear it go sideways once, Me nail it again, it go sideways again, and Me short shifting the Lenco... and hauling ass.
"One Run (go figure....) Bob, out...............................................................................................
:-P :-P :-P

Does anyone know if and if so where daily runs will be posted for WOS 2018?

Good luck to all

Wish I could be there with the 7707 Fuel Roadster, but business commitments keep me here in the UK and secondly we could not get it fully serviced in time. ☹️☹️☹️☹️☹️😣😣

I miss the live audio feeds!!

I just heard a rumor that Vesco ran 482 today. can anyone verify this?

I just heard a rumor that Vesco ran 482 today. can anyone verify this?
the Team Vesco facebook page have posted the number - but was this peak or for the mile?

See attached.

388.89131 quarter, 410.14940 first mile, 454.97423 middle mile, 482.16999 last mile, 464.30926 back door. I'll post a pic of the slip if I can get it here, but still --
DANG!! Decent speeds! Corngratulations Dave and the entire Vesco team.
Now -- why's the exit speed slower than the last mile? Did something happen?
-
This is a major bump from previous runs [with a Danny Thompson run for comparison]!
Let's hope it's not hurt! :x
-
Must have been close to 500 mph with 482 and 464 exit, 18 mph diff!!
Something must have happened.
JL222
-
Could be it was getting a little bumpy out there.
-
The car is not hurt. Dave shut off a little early.
I suspect we will see them go faster on their return run.
-
OMG what a run look at the wind all zeros and only 79 degrees The DA 5700 WOW
-
I agree --I bet he had to be north of 5 at some point
-
stunning stuff
-
Turbinator just went 483...
-
Strasburg lakester slowed a bit from yesterday but set record over 360, sounded awesome.
-
so has anybody found run logs from yesterday posted anywhere?
-
Beast Studebaker early turnout on record back up run.

Rick Vesco just posted on Facebook:
New National record 482.646 mph for Dave Spangler, TURBINATOR II & Team Vesco!

Don’t hold your breath. They’re sometimes slower that at Speedweek!
-
Did anybody hear the speed for the Double Eagle D/DS record run?
If so, please post.
Thanks,
Jeff from Boise
-
Nish streamliner just went 388. Knapp streamliner in tech line.
-
Strasburg lakester slowed a bit from yesterday but set record over 360, sounded awesome.
At SW I asked about that sound -- alky and some nitrous -- no pop! The motor has the roar of a big load, that's for sure.
-
We’ve been holding for wind for about 15 minutes now.
Jeff from Boise
-
some serious history made today by Team Vesco!! Only 18 more mph to 500.
-
I just heard at the hotel that Team Vesco chose not to go to impound after their 483mph record run this morning.
I guess the explanation is that they really want a 500MPH record, and it’ll be easier to requalify on their old
463 record than the 483! Does that make sense?
Jeff from Boise
-
Update- was just in the elevator with a Vesco crew guy.
He said the above is NOT correct, and they did take the new 483 record.
So, as Roseanne Roseannadanna used to say: “Never mind.”

Blacksalt Racing 388!
Was that Mile 5, exit, or ???
Guess he got the inter cooler fixed!
Jeff from Boise
-
Nish streamliner 419 exit speed, I think 408 at 5?
-
Sorry missed Blacksalt exit.
-
Is Nish AA or A? I forget.
-
Nish is AA/FS, running on Danny Thompson’s 448 record.
Jeff from Boise
-
Sorry missed Blacksalt exit.
So the 388 was Mile 5?
-
I think the Blacksalt mile 5 was 388, not for sure though.
-
Don’t know why, but they just did a handful of record return runs on the short course.
Jeff from Boise
-
USFRA said for those going to impound this morning that they would allow them to attempt their record runs at 1:00 PM today, 5:00 PM today, or tomorrow morning as usual.
-
whooeeee the speeds just keep climbing---next the price of tea had already gone up before the tariffs kicked in

Oh noooo.

Blacksalt chute out at 2, were going for 400.

Flashpoint big crash. Bob is OK. Car is done
-
Yes Bob is fine, car not so much...
Black Salt lost a tire on return run.
-
Flashpoint and Black Salt  two of my favorite cars to follow
-
On the Pepperoni Bros. Facebook page we have a grainy iPad video of the Flashpoint incident taken from about the 3 -1/2, Steve did what he could with it but it was a long ways away.
-
That's sad to see. all that time, money and work. But well built and bad ass car to bring Bob thru safely. I always liked Flashpoint's front wing.
Hope Bob will be back.
Good luck Bob. JL222 and team

Bob so glad to see you be able to pose by your ride after such a great pass the day before yesterday

Forecast is warm and dry heading into the first week of October.
-
Congratulations Team Vesco on the record and fantastic speeds you attained especially in the 2 1/4.
Sorry to hear about Flashpoint crashing. Glad to see Bob is OK. Wish the tire would have stayed up to get the record. Here is to hoping the chassis and motor are not hurt to bad, and that you will be back.
Congratulations to all of the other racers who set records at WOS.

The Flashpoint car was next to us in the pits and I had the opportunity to check it over after its crash. The chassis is built especially strong and did not appear to have any sever structural damage, obviously it will need a tear down and inspection but it "looked" straight. Lots of brackets and minor parts where destroyed including both of the wings and their supports. All of the body panels are junk. Bob had what appeared to be a helmet induced bruise above his eyes and I will bet he was sore! I was really impressed on his qualifying run, 451 out the back that thing really has some motor! So glad to see him walk away from the crash, a comment to their design and fabrication ability and to the SCTA safety rules.

glad to read your assessment of Flash Point---there may be a reason why Speed Demon uses so many tires soerta like "1 Run"
-
I wonder if they might have had a little bit too much downforce on the rear tires. How did the other rear tire look? I know the technology exists to measure the downforce in real time but I don't imagine that it is cheap (think Formula 1). I wonder if anyone looked at the tire tracks just before the accident scene to examine the tire plant?
Anyway, it was a beautiful car, looked great, sounded awesome and I hope they can fix-er-up!
Bob Drury
-
From what I could see, the other tire was peeled off the rim from going sideways. It was heavily damaged. There were many photos taken of the track and tire marks from the point of the blowout to where the car came to rest.

A couple of notes about your question Bob. First, the tire failure was do to a panel coming loose and rubbing the tire until it deflated. Yes, they do monitor wing load during the run. As a side note, the wing load changes during the run. At the point of tire failure there was virtually no load from the wing being applied to the car.

Thanks for the update Mike
-
I was asked by Dennis Sullivan, President of USFRA, to pass along this note.
The USFRA would like to apologize to the racers that ran on the long
course and used the exit clocks for tuning at the 2018 World of Speed.
When we moved the course one mile closer to the freeway, with approval
of BNI chairman Bill Lattin, the 132 foot exit clock was misplaced at
138 feet. After being discovered, it was corrected.
All of the other mile clocks were placed on the SCTA survey pins
that were used at Speed Week. As records are established from speeds set using the
mile clocks, all the records set at the 2018 World of Speed are
accurate and certified. We would also like to thank all of the racers that attended
this year’s World of Speed and hope to see you next year.
Dennis Sullivan
President USFRA

Monte,
Is that why the run logs from Sunday and Monday are not yet posted?
-
Dennis, I'm wearing out my mouse trying to see the results of the last two days. On another subject, I made the case for low drag Top Alcohol Dragster type wings on high HP cars in order to gain needed traction. Flash Point car would own Tom Burkland's record but for bad luck. One engine and rear wheel drive. Hope they can rebuild.

Actually, Burkland's record is in AA/BFS, while Flashpoint was running A/BFS on Speed Demon's 423MPH record.

Thank's Monte and Mike L.
It is rare that any race official's comment or reply to questions like I asked. THIS IS WHAT MAKES THIS SITE SO DARNED INVALUABLE TO US RACERS!
If I hit the lottery I am going to send Slim enough money to buy a professional audio/visual mobile studio to take to the salt... maybe one of those 2 million dollar custom motor coaches with the studio in a matching trailer.
Hopefully Bob Dalton can pick up some "big time" sponsorship and continue His quest.
"One Run Bob" Drury, out..........................................
-
Monte,
Is that why the run logs from Sunday and Monday are not yet posted?
No, it's just that we have been busy putting everything away and getting home cleaning up, etc, etc. I am working with the others to get it posted. Too much to do, not enough (young) people to get it done.
-
O.K. then make the engine 501 c.i. and own AA record also. LOL

The run data and results for Sunday and Monday have now been posted on our website, saltflats.com
-
Bonneville Salt Flats International Raceway, UT –Team Vesco’s Turbinator II, driven by Dave Spangler, Dana Point, CA, eclipsed the current 458MPH World Record clocking a blistering 482.646 MPH certified National Record in T-3 Class during the World of Speed time trials hosted by the Utah Salt Flats Racing Association (USFRA) held September 14 – 17.
Team Vesco is not done. The team will return to the salt in October focused on earning the distinction of becoming the first wheel driven car to exceed 500MPH. Spangler’s top, one-way speed of 492 MPH puts the team within eight miles per hour of its 500MPH goal.
“We have the power with our 5,000HP Lycoming internal combustion shaft turbine engine and will attempt to finish the job at the SCTA’s World Finals,” said Driver Spangler of the upcoming October 2-5 event. “We have a good chance to reach our magic 500 number and invite visitors to witness hot rod history in real time!”
Due to an extremely dry spring and summer the halite salt crust presents a concrete like hard surface, which lends itself to great traction racing. The amateur racing community agrees the 2018 track is the best racing surface in two decades.
“People need to remember that the salt surface remains very thin,” cautioned car owner Rick Vesco. “Decades of BLM mismanagement has allowed evaporative mining operations to pump away millions of tons of salt for more than 50 years and we trust that the Save The Salt Coalition’s multi-tiered and multi-year restoration plans will rebuild our 13-mile International Raceway to safe racing conditions. We are ready to vie for a new FIA World Record, but salt is not”
Team Vesco sets 482MPH National Speed Record higher than its current 458MPH World Speed Record!
-
Not many motorcycle records set at WOS this year. I'm only counting 5 sit on bike records and 4 full streamliner sidecar records.
Are the records getting to be where there is very little "low hanging fruit" left? If so that is a very good thing IMO.
