Title: New Summer Brothers Goldenrod book - tech heavy
Post by: velocity on August 05, 2018, 05:29:42 PM
After previewing my advance copy, I as so blown away by the incredible detail that author John Baechtel has compiled on the Goldenrod story that I have added a special link on my website. The book is literally "on the boat" to the USA along with blueprints and posters. Geez. Baechtel's website provides a very well done promo. The cost is bit more than normal hard covers, but the quality, detail and color is worth the extra coin. Well. . ., at least to me and I guessing those who are after the mechanical and engineering details of such a fabulous hot rod will agree. I will be using some of what Baechtel has written to augment my new book on Bonneville's speed century for the university of Utah Press. Parking it in the bibliography today.

See for yourself at www.landspeedproductions.biz

I plan on having a box of them with me at World of Speed.

There is good SAE article about the aerodynamics of Goldenrod written by the designer. Don't have time to look in my files for it now as hitting road for the salt in about 10 mins. I can pull it out when I get home if anyone wants details. I used the basic concepts to design my 'liner.

Are you referring to the Korff papers on the design? He worked with Bob Sumers to design the aero package

Alex Tremulis was an after the fact interested party with the Goldenrod, but Korff was in on the build from the design stage.

Mine arrived in todays mail, it is spectacular. Ordinarily I binge read books but this thing is going to take a month to digest all the detail.

My copy also arrived yesterday and Jim is correct that it is going to take some time to soak up all of the info. Absolutely a fantastic book. After doing a quick thumb through, several things are obvious, the Summers Brothers were ahead of their time, they were great machinist, fabricators and designers. And a real special thanks to all of the people that worked so hard to restore this piece of American Bonneville history!!

After my usual "shot gun" approach to a new book (that's looking at all of the pics and reading anything that catches my eye) I made a pact that I will start on page 1 and read the book completely through. A couple of things become very evident 1. There is an unbelievable amount of effort and research into this book and it is beautifully done. 2. The Summers brothers are even more impressive than I originally thought! For a couple of young guys in their late 20s and early 30s they are smart beyond their years and when you look at they way the car is built and the fact that they did it in less than a year, they must have never slept!!!

Great book and worth every penny!
