Good luck at Speed Week, Steve. I won't be there to see your Bantam run, this year I'm going to try the World of Speed at Bonneville in September. It should be a little cooler then.

Nancy and I left the house this morning - Bonneville or bust! Brand new truck, no trailer, wow - so much less to pack when you don't have much room.  Jamestown ND tonight, Big TImber MT tomorrow (and yes, Doug, we'll wave as we go past), SLC Monday night and the Salton Tuesday.

Obviously we've got all sorts of connectivity with us so get in touch if ya need to do so.   And yes, I think I've got all of the equipment with me for the streaming.  I even brought Chris's donation of a microphone so we can have a dedicated ambience mic.

See you on the salt.

You aren't gonna believe it.  As Nancy and I drove in from Land's End to the Compound - it was smooth.  Really smooth.  The whole danged way in.   Smooth and dry.  Yeah, it got a bit moist as we arrived at the pits, about 4 miles from Land's End.  And yeah, out by the 5 about halfway between the return road and the course - the salt crust was buckled and only a half-inch or so thick.  I'll post pics later.

The salt is kinda sticky - some accumulated on the truck and our shoes, but still --

Gee-ZUS!  The salt looks better than it has for a LONG time - at least a couple of years.  And the long course return road won't break your spring shackles this year.

YIPPEE!!

Oh, yeah - they're sealcoating or paving or something - right smack down the road from the truck stop, with flaggers and sticky tar nd everything.  Sure glad they decided to pave now and not last week or something.

Bring your mineral spirits or kerosene to clean the crud off your vehicle.

Some cultural input:  Nancy and I ate at the Copper Kettle (nee Poblano Taco, nee others) tonight.  It's the little restaurant right next to the Post Office in Wendover.  It's a fine place to eat.  Well, maybe it coulda been better -- Cree and Steve Straw were there.

The Salt Flats Cafe Metro is looking good, with a nice crowd for a Tuesday before SpeedWeek.  Last year we saw they'd posted a note to the local folks:  Please stay away for the next week because we'll be jammed with racers." (or words to that effect).

(http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii147/SeldomSeenSlim/SpeedWeek%202018/OgZy08uBSn2c2UbCZmkHfQ_zps3xy0ropd.jpg) (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/SeldomSeenSlim/media/SpeedWeek%202018/OgZy08uBSn2c2UbCZmkHfQ_zps3xy0ropd.jpg.html)

For other after-racing pursuits - follow the sign:

(http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii147/SeldomSeenSlim/SpeedWeek%202018/SguzM1ceRgTXHnyZp5rcw_zpsvcolzucn.jpg) (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/SeldomSeenSlim/media/SpeedWeek%202018/SguzM1ceRgTXHnyZp5rcw_zpsvcolzucn.jpg.html)

Here's the front door of Carmen's.  Don't let the patina be a concern, K?

(http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii147/SeldomSeenSlim/SpeedWeek%202018/a1vU1Jd5Q6GAiGzbCLjHw_zpstvrqdffs.jpg) (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/SeldomSeenSlim/media/SpeedWeek%202018/a1vU1Jd5Q6GAiGzbCLjHw_zpstvrqdffs.jpg.html)

Other new stuff in town: Right behind the W. Wendover Welcome Center there's a micro-mall with a quick lube shop, a dollar store and a couple of other new shops.  It's brand new!  I didn't take a picture.  At the west end of W. Wendover there's now a store open kinda in the same building as the hardware store across from Smith's -- and it's a smoke and head shop. I don't remember the name of the place - musta been good, hey?

Other stuff:  The salt thins out and turns kinda brown out around the 4 1/2 on courses 1 and 2, but it's still pretty good - especially compared to recent years.  Out between the courses there are crunchies but not bad.  You shouldn't plan on driving out there with your race vehicle but it isn't terrible - don't worry too much.

The return road from courses 3 and 4 is good.  No more potholes, and it's pretty firm, too.  Don't go too close to the dike - I saw some standing water...

Joe told me the story about the Vesco #444 car getting some major changes - including a new number.  It's here and maybe Joe will show up in the announce trailer later this week to tell us about the changes (he did lots of them in his new shop in Florida).  The 111 car - the Turbinator - will be here, too.

And at supper at the Metro - the Salt Flats Cafe - we coulda got done way sooner but we had to stop every few seconds to howdy somebody.  Geez, all the good ones (people, that is) were there.  And then there's the food.  We paid thirteen dollars for these skimpy little platefuls. . .

Well, it sure looks like the 444!  Is that it, or is it another clone?

The Little Giant is shown wearing a different name and number - for this event, at least.

Some stuff.  That 297 car - the little red 'liner - is running in K/DS.  I haven't seen it yet but I hear the engine is a diesel two cylinder that the racer built from scratch.  I'll chase it down for more details.

In re:  The 1986 E/STR car.  Robin Dripps, the usual driver, broke her back in a crash at home so her long-time buddy (like high school antics buddy - I've heard some of Rob's stories), Rob Gibby, is going to drive the car.  Good news for me, I hope I hope.  Rob and I are about the same size.  Maybe I can sweet-talk my way into a ride. . .

There are four courses set up, and each of the courses has three count them three courses dragged and prepared (well, I won't promise that course #4 has three wide).  On the first two the salt is great and white for at least 4 miles and starts showing some brown after that.  The courses look good.  I went chasing way the heck out thee today, down by the 7.  There are plenty of turnouts all the way down the course, and some are at a really small angle - so anybody still going fast can stay out of the crunchies (which aren't all that bad but yes they're there).

Bike inspection sure was slow today.  In early afternoon Papi was lamenting how few bikes were lined up and waiting.

Rick Gold with the ERC fuel truck is here and set up.  I don't have his opening hours for tomorrow, but Saturday and beyond he'll be open by 7, I believe.  Goodyear is here with tire equipment.  I'll have more information about what they're going to be able to do - when they deliver it to me.

Ron Christensen got here this afternoon so the announcing team of Mutt and Slim (or whatever) is ready to go.  I suppose we'll try to send some semi-coherent noise down the stream tomorrow as a test - don't expect regular service 'til Saturday morning.

How many courses?
Title: Re: SpeedWeek 2018: The developing story
Post by: Seldom Seen Slim on August 09, 2018, 10:48:45 PM
I thought I covered that, but I'm trying to keep up with posts here and on my Facebook and on the landracing.com FB page, too. Anyway:

There are four courses this year, numbered from nearest the pits to farthest away.  Course 1 is the traditional long course, and course 2 is what I'm guessing is going to be a "combination" course - long and/or short (i.e. it has timing lights past the three and is prepped down to the 7 or 8 or whatever.

Course 3 is a short course - 3 timed miles.  Course four is timed for one mile (I think) and is the rookie course.

All courses are three lanes wide to allow for moving easily if one gets farkled from wear or whatever.

K?

I intend to originate the stream on landracing.com, and I know SCTA is planning to link it to their site and to their Facebook page.  I might put it on my personal FB page, might put it on the landracing.com page, too.  We'll get it out there.  I don't know who else will pick it up but they're welcome to do so.  I'll try some audio this afternoon, but first we have to have the equipment dudes visit to set up stuff.

LATE BREAKING NEWS:
CRISIS AVERTED!!!
[/b]  The a/c stopped working in the announce trailer, but we got it back.  WheW!!  We now know conclusively that if the hot air exhaust is blown into a small and totally enclosed room - the thing overheats and craps out.  It took a little while but we're chill once again.

We now return you to regular coverage.

Further stuff:  We'll be broadcasting out here on 89.3 FM

Okay, I don't have a schedule handy.  What time is the drivers meeting tomorrow?  I seem to remember it being at 9, but I also seem to remember when my hair was dark brown.  Whatever, when???

Jerry from Meziere (fuel pumps and stuff) is on the salt as a spectator who let his boss know he was coming out to SW.  Now he's here with some parts and know-how and the boss' blessing.

Goodyear has two guys and some tires and lots of machines and know how and they're set up in the vendor area.  I don't have the full list of vendors yet - will pass that along later, although yes, there is an ice vendor set up and selling all week.  I didn't check their prices this year but in the past any difference between what you'd pay in town gets kinda eaten up by the convenience of having them right handy.  And there wasn't much difference.

Nancy and I drove off the salt at about 5.30 and there were no vehicles in line at either course 1 or 2.  NONE.  Maybe I'll take note of who's there when I head in in the morning.

Here's the last batch of pics from today.

Hey, kids -- any noise coming down the internet to you?  I think the stream is up and running but I'm still gunshy and like confirmation.

I'm gonna head to the line in a few minutes for the drivers meeting, and I'll try to get the audio back to Ron so you can enjoy the spectacle of the event.

At the line for first runs are the 715 SpeedDemon, the 883 and 497 'Vwettes, Ed Umblad's B/BGS -- really shiny and chrome and don't touch it in the sun or you'll burn your hands...

Lots of vehicles have left the pits for the line - this is gonna be GREAT!!

Regarding Danny Thompson's 446+MPH run yesterday....

I know there have been a couple of faster runs at the Shootout/FIA-sanctioned meets, but has there ever been a faster run at Speedweek?

Hopefully, he'll be able to back it up with a similar record run this morning!

I think there is only Don Vesco in 2001 - 459 mph (not backed up).

Well then, it would appear that Danny does hold the bragging rights for fastest single run by a piston-engine car at Speedweek - at least for the time being.

But with Speed Demon switching to the "A" motor, it also appears that Mr. Poteet isn't ready to relinquish his stranglehold on the Hot Rod Trophy just yet.

Turbinator II may have a shot at that trophy, too.  In talking with Dave Spangler yesterday, it appeared they had some sort of fuel control problem.  Apparently, it would start, but then stop running.  Hopefully, they'll get that sorted out PDQ!

And, there may be others...

Jeff from Boise

Good morning, kiddos.  It's already Sunday.  The parade to the line for record return runs is moving right along - down there but not ready to run yet.

Today portends to be a haul-ass day.  Danny Thompson is running on yesterday's 446, George has an A motor installed.  The Turbinator has fixed (they hoped) a fuel line issue. Strasburg's lakester went fast, the 325 Beamco went 300+ on its first run.

26 or 27 vehicles for return runs this morning.  As Ron puts it, nearly 2 pages of short course qualifiers and almost a full page of long course vehicles.

Cabinite is running AA/BFS, they are running against Danny's new record.

I believe they are running against a Tom Burkland record. Danny Thompson's record is in the AA/FS, not BFS. Either way, awesome run for the Carbiliner. First run over 400mph.

It must be time for a new wrap of masking tape around the XLR connector at the back of the micronome.  I'll fiddle tomorrow morning. That you very much for the comment.

The event ended early after the cleanup of the 757 car incident.  We went to Land's End for Salt Talks - and it went over kinda like a fart in church. We only got a few dozen folks there, ate some food and told some stories, took in some donations and sold some shirts.  There's lotsa stuff left that we didn't auction or sell -- so I guess there's going to be an online auction.  We've got a handheld weather station from Joe Timney  -- it retails at $245.  That's available for the highest bid.  Remember it's a fundraiser for the site -- dig deep, please.  There's more stuff, of course.  Thanks to the donors, thanks to Stainless and Podunk and Johnboy and on and on for being at Salt Talks.

Ditto if you want shirts.  We sold a bunch, have many reserved for later this week, but still have some.  If you want a few I'll send them to you - I can ship four or five shirts for under $10 total, so order lots of them and distribute the shipping cost over a bunch of them.

It's a quarter 'til ten and I hafta been on the salt by about 6.30 so I'm done forthe night.  Thanks to all that helped Salt Talks be as much fun as it was.  And most of all -- thank you to Nancy that did the shopping and setup and way more of the work than she had any right to do - save that it needed doing and I was busy talking. Thank you, my sweet love.

C U folks tomorrow.

Thanks for your help. I had left the Salt early for home for various reasons. Wedding Aniv. tomorrow for one and a house full of guests coming. Anywhoo, I did not drag the trans with me since I had no interest from my ad. Well between a dozen or so pals that heard your plea for help Roger got ahold of me and found someone to pick it up here at my house in South Dakota. It will be headed West shortly so that they can keep racing!

Jack is doing well! He got banged up a bit and the car was on its lid when it came to a stop after a spin that turned into a tumble.  He was fully alert and coherent but went to the hospital to get a good check out as a precaution. I talked with CJ as she was leaving the salt right behind him to meet up with him at the U hospital and he was doing good.  The car will be back after some work over the winter.  Steve and the team are still out there and will be running the other 2 Camaros for the rest of the meet.  Jack is fine and the 757 Camaro will live to fight again another day.

Danny accomplished all his desired goals and dreams at Bonneville -- and hopefully he just loads it into the trailer and puts the streamliner in the museum.  Nothing wrong in doing that.  Somebody might break his record soon or decades from now.  Doesn't matter.  It won't take away what he has accomplished and for himself personally.  One heck of a story and final closing chapter for a great family legacy at Bonneville!

B/BFS 416pmh

This was set at Speed Week in 2016.

There 452 mph 1st run today REALLY set the bar high today.  If the back it up...awesome!

Their 452 mph exit is just shy of Danny's 459mph.

This is almost better than reality!!!!!

We'll be back tomorrow at 7 for return runs.  We could see some more astounding runs in the cool morning air on the brand new course.

Darn! Same here. This is the first time since 2003 that I have not been at Speed Week and this year the streamliners are going faster than ever out there. I had to write off Speed Week because of a family wedding that conflicted. I doubt that World of Speed will be as historic.

Crap - sorry.  I shut off the stream when the course was on wind hold and we were pretty sure that nothing more was gonna happen.  I meandered over to the 200 MPH Club membership meeting - and when it was over I heard Ron talking on the radio.  Sure as heck, they were making some runs on courses 3&4.  I'll tell ya more about that in the morning if there are any good stories.

Record eturn runs start at 7, as usual.  There were quite a few in impound when we left -- Mike Kaehny didn't have a count for me.  I sure hope to have the qualifiers list in the morning so we can sty up with the numbers.

Top right of a post, click on "Quote".  That gives a "Reply with Quote" function if you like.  Just be sure to type before "[quote" or after "[/quote]".

I can think of eight over 300 mph, but don't have accurate information (more of a car guy).  There are probably a few more.

Been wearing out my refresh button on this thread . . . my only connection to the "action".  The Live feed app has been on all morning with no sound. Then, with your post the sound suddenly appeared. No idea what happened. Sound almost inaudible even though the app's volume bar is WFO. Not complaining, I'm happy I can get anything but if anyone has a suggestion re sound volume, I'm all ears!   :-D

Slom, thanks for the audio today. I’ve been on the road and you and Ron have made a long drive pleasant. This morning you went outside to test the mike. Slim, you sounded a little lean. I think you need to change jets or maybe put in a couple degrees more advance. Your throttle response was poor but you picked up micely on the third “test”.Otherwise you sounded great!

After setting record in the morning, the ever enthused and dedicated Randy Speranza was in his pit making the necessary changes to run on yet another record. The was not to be. His aorta chose to begin to shred itself and it was only due to the quick, correct diagnosis that he is still with us as I write this note. Lifeflighted out to SLC, he was rushed into surgery where doctors went to work repairing Randy. After hours of delicate grafting and stitching, the land speed racing husband of DeEtte Speranza was wheeled into recovery heavily sedated around 10:30 mountain time. He's got many skilled eyes on him for the next 24 hours folks, so if you've got any kind of prayer in you, it would be a kindness indeed to offer up.

As I have seen over and over again, when one land speed racer goes down for whatever reason, so many others pitch right in without being asked. So it was done for Randy. . . His pit, his record-setting motorcycle, and every other vestige of his racing has been gathered up by friends. Still others are with DeEtte in SLC, so there is no lonely vigil for this loved one.

Some of you may also know him from his long years helping perfect the Brant,Wright, Speranza diminutive, yet mighty blue streamliner that earned the SCTA championship years ago.

C'mon Randy, we are pulling for you. . . you got more record runs to make.

UPDATE ON RANDY SPERANZA

He is off the ventilator and awake. he can only whisper, but that's more than enough right now. The surgeons essentially rebuilt the majority of his aorta. This was no valve job, this was the entire artery failure.
Think of the fuel pump separating from the front of the motor at WOT and you have an idea.

DeEtte asks that people NOT visit for at least 3/4 days to give the guy a chance to rebound. This was a phenomenal butt kicker

Back to the motel for the evening except we're going to the 200 MPH Club banquet at the Nugget.

Racing ended about 3.45 or so as the wind came up, one course stoppig, then another, then only slow vehicles choosing to run, then finally f*ck it, let's give it up.  This is the third day in a row with identical weather - temps, skies, winds, even wind times and directions.  Try again tomorrow, when we'll be down to two courses - 3 is now done for this event.

The Speed Demon is going to run in the morning.  They put the A motor in it last night and made one aborted run earlier today - coincidentally ending up coasting right about to the pits.  Anyway, the car went to the line and was first in line when the wind ended things.  The car is back in thepit for the night but will be out there in the morning with the A motor no doubt set to "best fuel economy" setting.  Yeah, right.

SET IT ON KILL!!

DeEtte Speranza got a chance to exhale a bit earlier today. Get this people: the University of Utah Med Center Docs had Randy up and taking a few steps not 24 hours after splitting his chest to repair his aorta. The pain meds are still a work in progress but I asked whether they harvested the donor graft material from his butt to have allowed the guy to go from 1 in 4 chance of dying to shuffling a few steps in hours. Talk about a hard a**, sheesh!

Modern medicine, stunning. Thanks to the whole med team that paid attention in school in order to put our pal back in good working order.

Also, all you who have called with offers of various support has touched DeEtte's heart. She has not a single loose end to worry about, every blessed bit of racing gear has been gathered, packed and is on the way back to their home as I write this. Land Speed Racers -  family in so many ways.

PLEASE don't go visit until at least Saturday or Sunday. For as good as this news is (Thank you God), Randy really needs to be still and chill. If you go, he will want to engage. The boy needs his rest; help him do that.

Ioffer this pic from happier, long-haul bike riding days with Mr. & Mrs. Speranza

This . . .

http://www.scta-bni.org/sw-race-results.html

answers a lot of questions.  Hell of a lot better than waiting late at night for them to be taped up at the Stateline.

We met a lot of first timers (some drag racers) who were bitching about the instant times given on the radio and why some runs were not reported.  And why the numbers were in the thousanths.  Nice guy that I am, I instructed them that all the info on four different courses running at the same time came at no cost and was the best ever.

Don't forget to reward Slim for this.

Tom. Speeddemon ran earlier with their A motor. At mile 3, i think it was 365 or so and then the motor went to pieces, or so they said. I am waiting to see if Flashpoint is going to run also. I might have missed it if it did, but i don't think so.

Speed Demon just ran a 448.508 - with the "A" motor, which is a qualifier on their 423.521 record from 2016!

So, they've still got a shot at the Hot Rod Trophy, but they'll have to add about 15 MPH on their record run tomorrow to do it.

Title: Re: SpeedWeek 2018: The developing story

The way i understood it, the demon changed motors yesterday after their run to a C class motor. So don't think there is a return run for them. What happened to the A motor? Don't know. I think they want a balls out run today. Ron gave an update late yesterday. Perhaps he will update us.

Thanks for the update guys. Fingers crossed for a fast run out of C motor this morning. On another note, does anyone know what happened to Flashpoint yesterday?  They posted on FB that they were going to throw the kitchen sink at it, but I never heard them make a pass.

Question, I suppose there is not enough time for back-up runs and no fast cars were a leg up on records, so....If Turbinator, Speed Demon, Flashpoint and Carbonite make hero runs today it is for the
sole purpose of getting Top Speed Trophy at the end of this monumental week?

After the qualifying run you can stop at pits?

Being there for 4 of the days and also listening to Ron and Slim's broadcast, I'm sure they could tell you that they needed better info from both the tower and starting line to make it a better broadcast. They wanted to give us better info but they didn't have it to give.

I hope next year they get info direct from the starting line when a car leaves so we even in the pits can become better spectators. Ron was at the starting line for yrs and could see at least 2 courses and could keep us all informed and got readout of their speeds. This year it seemed like there were speed read outs and then they had to lookup the car # to see who it was.

I feel record run mornings were the best even tho they sometimes didn't get all 4 courses qualifiers they got us the info as soon as they could... I'm glad they were there and thank them for doing their part of a great week.

I really enjoyed the play by play and the stories.   Would like to hear some/more driver/crew interviews etc.

One thing I would like to see is a "live" timing feed.   It could be a simple spreadsheet type web page that allows you see car#, class, driver, and each mile time live as it happens.   It should allow you to sort/group based on cells, etc.   Easier to catch up when you have step away from audio feed for work/meeting.

I "watch" a number of SCCA club races and most of them have this type of setup using the Race Monitor app.

Thanks for everything it was very enjoyable!!!!   Amazing to see everyone push until the end to get their goals.

Woody, You took several photos of the 2004 B/GS green streamliner, pretty slick looking piece. Did you have anything to do with it? If not what are your thoughts regarding the design? Just from your pics it looks to me they are trying to do a long laminar flow shape. Hope they run at World of Speed, I would love to see it.

Sorry,

we are all (also the once who can't listen to the streaming) can be more than happy what Jon and Ron doing from their announcer box....

It's absolute impossible to get all numbers from all four courses....

very often the racers running on three courses to the same time ( I framed one day a picture with racers on course 1, 2 and 3...in the same moment)....what you will focus on...

So we have to accept that sometimes our favorite racer will be not announced.

Be happy what we get.

I've been in the "chicken coup" that Ron and Slim broadcast from.  There's a lot going on, but I can tell everyone that they do their darndest to get as much pertinent and timely information out to those listening as is humanly possible.

If a run gets overlooked, it's simply an oversight.

They do this without the help of a producer or "show runner", and with a disparate stream of information coming from numerous sources that are sometimes coming in simultaneously, sometimes incomplete, and occasionally wrong.

What we actually heard this week was real-time journalism - unedited, unscripted, as-it-happens, and real.

Given that they've been able to put together a week's worth of targeted programming heard around the world that is this compelling to fans of LSR, working in conditions that would drive lesser men to pack up and head for the hotel, and to do so with the minimal investment in equipment and technology that they have at their disposal, I think they should be nominated for a Pulitzer Prize.

Well done, boys.

I second all the remarks (less one) regarding the job done by Ron and Jon in their broadcast!  When we were there on Saturday and Sunday, we'd head for our car - or somebody's else's - awaiting word on the speeds.  After I got home, it was more of the same whenever I could stream the audio.  Without them we'd still be in the dark!  So, congrats to Ron and Jon once again for all their efforts and a job well done!

I'll put my vote in for Jon and Ron, too. That is a really tough job and you did it really well. Of course you probably should have considering the astronomical salary you were paid. Maybe next time there could be a volunteer at the start of each course who could relay the vehicle number to you guys? Maybe some of us need to volunteer for that job next time. Will you guys be at BMST?

We listened to the broadcast while out on the salt for four days and I must say thanks to Slim and Ron (and everyone else involved), for all the effort . I personally enjoy the conversation provided, in addition to the continual reports from the four courses. It's nice to listen to a broadcast, that is not overly regulated and I find this adds to the casual/friendly nature of Speed Week. Thanks again!

Just ask the donald...  Actually it would be nice if We could keep the boys in the studio and have a roving reporter interviewing racers in the staging lines and pits to use during down times.  The guy who would be great at it is that weirdo from BangShift.com, Chad Reynolds who is both a fan, booster, and pretty fu*king funny if You have ever watched him on March Meet broadcasts of the recent past.  Besides, He needs another thankless, no paying job...........

Jon, after setting a record (return run) you must go directly to impound.

After the qualifying run you can stop at pits?

I will add, go directly to impound after getting your timing slip, you will have to stop once to get the timing slip.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________

You cannot go through the pits after either a qualifying or record run. The timing slips are located outside the pit area very close to the impound entrance. One hour from the time stamp on the slip is the maximum time allowed to get to impound. One competitor was denied a record because they stopped to pick up a plug wrench in the pits.

Fortunately following a re-qualify they set a record,

Yeah, disappointed...You'd think with the big budget and two professional radio guys on the air for 8 days straight we'd get our money's worth.  And, where were all the commercials like we get on station WUSS-FM ?
We wuz robbed !

Where do I apply for my refund ?

Slim and Ron did a great job  it should be understood that they can't get everything when multiple runs were going.

I thought the hamburger discussion was later in the week and not on Sunday

Well said.

Hi, to all.  I'm not happy with the radio coverage during speed week.  On Sunday we made a 281 mile/hr. run and never was on air.  The people were more concerned on how much money they could save if they brought 100 hamburgers in town.  I spend a lot of time and money to run there and what happened not only to us but to other teams, should not have happened.  If you want the world to respect what we do you can't act this way.  Sorry to air this but I feel it had to be said. Mike

If you are in this hobby for the accolades, I believe you are in the wrong hobby.

2 cents: I see both sides of the broadcast reviews . If you were not there then it's great and brings you some of the action (better then nothing at all). However, I agree that a lot of MPH announcements are missing. This has been a problem since Glen was relieved of duties. From a color analyst stand point, Slim and Ron do fine (get a little better every year) but as a racer I wish the FM MPH announcements would come over the CB like they used to.

      Jon and Ron:

Thanks for all of the work to put on the broadcasts. Not too many years ago live streaming was only a conversation on this forum, you and Ron...and others made it happen. We had you on in the pit, the staging lane and a few trips to Crawford's Parts Store. You guys did a great job.
      Let's see:
      - You volunteer
      - Drive 25 hours to get to Wendover
      - 10 or more days on the salt with set up
      - 4 courses running simultaneously
      - 106 degree announcing studio
      - On generator power
      - Broadcast 8 hours a day for 8 days
      - People stopping by the booth all day asking for announcements
      - Broadcast heard around the world

And one guy gets his feelings hurt because he did not hear you mention his run.

I'd say ignore him. We all appreciate what it takes for you and Ron to VOLUNTEER to keep us informed.

Thanks to all of the volunteers, SCTA, Landsend Linda and Landracing.com for a great Speedweek!

Okay - I'm back at the office and can talk a minute.  Here's some information.

First of all, Mike has a very valid point and all I can do is apologise.  As far as I'm concerned, my first duty is to give each racer the information he wants -- his speeds.  That is paramount.  No questions.  I yield the point.  You're right.  I'm sorry I missed that most important run of the event, Mike.  No matter the speed, the racer wants to know HIS numbers and NOW!

The data we see on the screens in front of us is simply the timing slip for each run.  That's all. And we don't see it 'til the tower clicks "print" or whatever.  Sometimes that's not until the next vehicle has been announced - might be a minute, might be a few seconds.

We understand that Glen Barrett gave you lots more information. That's because he was sitting in the timing tower, where all information goes first.  The starter radios the tower with the next vehicle number, and if we don't hear and understand it in the announce trailer - whether because of scratchy radio system noise or because we were reading another racer's numbers or whatever -- we won't know who's running 'til either we hear it on the radio or we see the vehicle a mile or two away and try to guess who it is.

We are located in a location that is chosen by SCTA/BNI - and I don't question it.  The trailer we use is also the Course 1 timing slip trailer.  If we were to be at the line, as has been suggested -- we'd be able to see what vehicle is up next - but only on the course it's near.  If the announce trailer were to be located between 1 and 2, as it used to be -- we'd have a chance to use binoculars to see who's up next - you're right.

Of course we'd have to hope that there aren't spectators and crew and others blocking the view, so we might have to wait a minute to identify the vehicle.  Remember that when there's another long pause because we're trying to see and therefore not looking a the screen to give you some other information.  By the way, in case you want to compare, the trailer is going to be at the line for WoS and it used to be at the line for SCTA/BNI events, too.  Ron likes the trailer being there, so do your best to hear what you think.  I won't be on the salt for WoS.

Back to announcing from the line:  and then there are courses 3 and 4.  There's no way we can see those, and who's to tell a racer that his numbers aren't important just 'cause he's way over there?  Or, worse -- just imagine when you were a rookie - how bummed you would be if everyone else's speeds were announced but yours - your very first time running on the salt - weren't?  No frickin' fair!

We missed some announcements because we had visitors in the trailer.  They ask for help - we try, and yes, sometimes we miss something on the race track.  Is Ron SanGiovanni glad I took the time to try to find some gears for him a year ago?  And the guys from the 636 car this year - should I have shooed them away?  Of course not - but maybe I wouldn't have missed calling out Mike's speeds if I had.  The Kiwi lady that kept coming in with pretty good information, not too much blather - if I'd asked her to stay out of the trailer I might have managed a bit fewer missed speeds - but I made the decision to add her comments to help everyone not just know what the NZ team was doing, but to share the international excitement of SpeedWeek.

Okay - I could go on, but I hope you understand a bit better some of the issues we faced.  Don't get me wrong - I had a ball.  I'll do it again, even if it'll take my eyes a week to get over staring at a dark screen with bright white salt reflecting the sun into my eyes - 8 or 10 hours a day.

Now - some of what we did during the week last week to make it better next time.

First of all, we have lousy reception on the FM radios - so we often can't hear what we need to hear to tell you.  SCTA/BNI has visited us in the trailer a bunch of times - now understands better the radio situation ("Maybe we cold install a base station/antenna so we'd have better reception.  Let's consider that").  The data that's on the screen in the tower could be displayed in our trailer -- if the entire data system gets expanded to send the stuff to us.  Radio infrastructure on the salt is a weird game, so I'll step back and let Manghelli and his crews know what we'd like - and hope the time and money budgets include more stuff for Ron and me soon.  It's all pretty good now - I'm not gonna crab about how good it should be.  I'll do what I can with what I have.

Second, we don't always get the right paperwork the next morning.  This hassle was dissected and chewed over and we think we've got it figured out.  All of the data from each day is entered and crunched overnight, and getting what we needed selected, printed, and into the announcer's slot at the motel for me to fetch the next morning - isn't as easy as it sounds.  And without those summaries - well, we're left to give you return run information, for instance, without being sure of yesterday's speeds.  We scrawl speeds as they come in and tomorrow morning we hope to find those scratchy notes, and that leads to confusing talk from us.  Hey - now we know what we need, and you betcha we'll have it next year.

There's more, more subtle stuff that I try to do to make the broadcast more informative and enjoyable, more hassles that we work around.  We do what we can.

Mike, I'm sorry I missed your numbers.

On the announcing by Slim and Ron all I will say is thank you for your time and effort, as I remember when it was 10 days to two weeks before any results were known to anyone not attending Speedweek. Back then you called your friends who went to Bonneville once they got home, and asked how they did.

Now with technology we are really spoiled and can listen in to the races live. Wow have times changed, and for the better.

I would also like to compliment Jon on the broadcast work. Yeah, I liked Glen's plain & simple numbers and the famous "Take it to impound", but those were different times. Four courses to pay attention to, down time to fill, long days cramped in a tiny trailer can't be much fun. But you guys did it and sounded cheerful the whole time. I think the FM broadcast has improved every year.
And, yes there was no announcement of my times and I have the all zeros timing slip to prove it. Also, sorry about the mess on 2 Sunday morning... we'll be back.
Hey, at least I finally got a red hat! Heck, every Participant got one! (now I just need to get the other red hat...)

Slim, as an old observation, Glen almost exculsively used the CB as a communication device. We know his and SCTAs intent was to inform the race vehicles crew on the location of their vehicle. Yes for sure he was always on the FM too for starting, vehicle #'s  etc,  but as spectators and crews we were not and I would not like to be. Ron was at the starting line with the entry info and a CB too to put out info tho car radios when he could. For years we had no one doing anything.....

Glen was also "kind enough" to repeat speeds which he did not need to do. 4 courses has changed that.  I know the towers were short help. Who really wants to come out before 7a and leave after 7p for 7 days. Even if both towers had a person dedicated to giving speeds of vehicles on the 2 different CB's channels....Mr. EGO may not get his speed out to the airways of the world to enjoy and only the vehicle # would be known. You guys had to look all the up, even if you had it, as a vehicle is coming and get it out to us.

Glen and the starters (Cagle) of the past and for the most part knew the #'s by heart and it was easier. I'm sure the starter still gives the tower who is coming.

You guys have no reason to apologize to anyone..................

PS: This year I'm wondering how many drivers kept their drivers suit on all day so everyone knew who the driver was? :? That always cracked me up. By the time my son got to me or I got him we were standing beside the car in our underware waiting for the pickup, towbar, tennies, shorts, and a big hat. OK late Oct maybe not.

We actually "experimented" with CB-announcing speeds on course 3 & 4 this year for a couple of days. The Rice brothers installed a trick "split screen" on my monitor so I could read course 3 AND course 4 vehicle numbers and speeds - announcing the latter with a short delay if another vehicle was running concurrently on course 3. Who knows, we may go back to CB announcing full time @ future meets.
Personally, I have no problem handling two mikes (FM/CB) - as it is done @ our El Mirage meets to this day.

Thank you for the very complete and informational coverage of the whole event Jon and Ron. I love dry wit, and Jon sense of humor is great. How can you be personable, funny, and patient while sitting in a small trailer for 12 hours a day (for NO pay). You can really tell that Jon has professional broadcasting experience. We are lucky to have him here.

The information coming across was not "perfect"  but no one should have expected it given the lack of coordination between the starters, tower, and announcers. I hope SCTA begins to realize how much this adds to the experience and implements a process so that the announcers get all the information they need. The technology is certainly there, it just needs the will of SCTA to make it happen.

Joe,

They were at speedweek but as I recall they only made one or possibly two passes. I think they ran a speed of about 272 in maybe the fourth mile.

That is all I remember looking at the results.

The car never made it to the salt flats in bolivia and was having a self steering problem during testing before speed week. He showed up Late Monday to speedweek and was just going to make some test passes in 2wd. I have not heard anything else about his speedweek testing I left on tuesday at noon. It's going to be badA$$ car if he gets it going straight.

I think he told me the top speed was 297.    He said it ran straight  as an arrow with very little throttle effort. It had a gremlin or two so he didn't get another shakedown run in.

As stated ... when he gets the 4 wheel drive sorted out it's going to be a RUNNER !!!

Hi Jon (Slim) & Ron,

I had to alas experience Speedweek 2018 vicariously. I have been to Speedweek twice before (plus "enjoying" Speedweek weekend from a hotel parking lot due to the flooding RIGHT AFTER we arrived after a 20 hour straight shot from Calgary, 2014 I think). I thoroughly enjoyed the live broadcasts in my shop and often resorted to listening to the saved stream of record return runs from the early AM after broadcasts ceased after your long day. My hats off to both of you and the team that makes this possible. Sure there were a few glitches with microphones but that had to have been less than 5% of the time. Thanks for even bothering to check for feedback from the forum and quick response in fixing any reported glitches in that regard.

So, constructively how can we help? Are there specific donations required? I'd certainly be happy to donate funds towards needed equipment. How do we do that?

Out of interest (as an Amateur Radio licensee who also puts on the radio infrastructure for the Rocky Mountain Motogiro) is HAM radio (VHF / UHF) level gear used or commercial FM radios or other?

Many thanks again. We are blessed to have ANY live coverage from the Salt.

P.S. Hope to be able to make World Finals. Fingers crossed on many counts.

Yo, Jim.  Thanks.  SCTA/BNI owns and operates the data links that move stuff around on the salt.  The FMs are commercial 450 Mhz handhelds (I think they're on 450) and there's a repeater on top of the hill in Wendover that's used - I think.  Forgive me - I haven't asked for details but I think I've got it right.  Manghelli and Yacoucci are the guys that run and maintain the radio and data links.

I wouldn't be surprised if what's needed to get the announce trailer more data -- is to ask for it.  In many cases we didn't get stuff 'cause nobody knew it was available for us/nobody knew to provide that data to us electronically. Every year we find more/ask for more/get more.  I don't think it's anything that you or I need to donate as much as it is to continue to refine what we have and what we can get.

There's a 2 meter repeater in Wendover, but I haven't tried using it in a while.  This year my truck was so new (got it four days before leaving for the salt) that I didn't have the 2 meter rig installed yet.

PS  Of course, donations to the site are always welcome

First time missed in 23 years. After I figured out my local problems I simply turned my phone speaker on, put it in my shirt pocket, and had better coverage the entire day than being there real time. No kidding, when thrashing in the pits a lot is going on and I would miss stuff from the CB all the time. At home the broadcast was with me everywhere. It seems the broadcast was better this year than FM at SW in the past. I remember the day when there was zero information going back home until after the end of the day when the call was made from the Nugget with long distance charges!

When I choose my first cell phone carrier it was based on their coverage map showing Bonneville included. Just imagine my disappointment when I got there and got zero. But I saw a few talking away on their phone and asked who their carrier was?  The next year I arrived with a new phone and a new carrier that I still have to this day. My, how times have changed!. Can you imagine what the job you did this year means to me Jon!  :-)
