Hoping to run for the first time, with a Honda CB77 running in 350 M-CG. Bike is running, crew already made hotel reservations. Looks like I have no more excuses. Time to get my thumb outta my a**, get registered and get out on the salt!

The 2018 FIM tech regulations have not been posted so I do not know if I can build a legal bike in time for the meet.  That also prevents me from sending in the entry forms.  Right now I am waiting for the rules to be posted so no "chatter."  It is always possible that a rule change could provide me with an issue that I do not have time or money to remedy.

Doc B, no excuses mate. Now you really will have to come along and enjoy it all.
I look forward to seeing you and your bike at the start line. Get ready, it'll be fun.

Thanks for the encouragement, folks. @Chris V, my goal is simply to get to Bonneville, get on the salt and keep it upright the whole way to the end. I didn't really choose that class by design, though the low hanging fruit of 62mph didn't exactly drive me away   I went as a spectator in 2016, got the fever, looked in the garage when I got home and there was that CB77 basketcase saying "build me". Had a couple of rides on it so far and nothing too important has fallen off yet, so I think I might make it. Look forward to meeting you all. You seem like my kinda people. By the way, should this thread be moved to BMST general chat? Sorry for being anal, I am a moderator of my own SMF based forum.

Doc B have you read the AMA rules in the BMST web site ??

I have read the rules. I think I'm compliant with the rules so far, save for safety wiring which should be getting done this weekend and taping over the lights. Added a kill switch reachable from the throttle, added a second safety leash kill switch in series, stock frame and motor that's under an .050 overbore, new tires rated for 112mph (I'm guessing I might be able to do 80?), removed passenger pegs, throttle snaps shut, front fender present, seat height pretty much stock, bars only an inch or so lower than stock, pegs within spec distance from rear axle, rebuilt steering damper, no oil leaks. Also have safety gear - two piece suit with full zipper, snell 2010 helmet, gloves, boots, etc. I'd greatly appreciate any suggestions on what else I need to do to pass muster.

DocB, not sure about the BMST, but most organizations require that you have tires that meet the record in that class, not what you think you can do.  If some TZ Yamaha bumped your record to 150, then you have to have tires for that record.

Thanks, good info to keep in mind. The current record is 62 so I guess I'm covered for the moment. Not necessarily in love with the tires I have anyway and I do have some higher rated ones in mind.

Thanks Jon! @DRW this will be my first time running on the salt. My last race days of any kind were 35 years ago autocrossing, though I do ride regularly. I have been holding off a bit on registration until I was sure I had a runner. It's on the list, I know the deadline for the lower entry fee is looming. When I started thinking about all this I did consider doing RWB (a rather brilliant idea to get new people into the sport) on an Aprilia Mille I use as a daily ride. However the opportunity to run all week as a competitor rather than a couple of runs in RWB seemed like a better plan when I factored in the amount of time and energy spent to get a bike on the salt. My wife and I enjoyed everyone we met in the couple days we spectated in 2016 and we want to really spend some more time this year and get to know people.

To sort of legitimize the location of this thread I do have a tech question. The foot pegs on this old Honda fold up, but they don't have return springs to make them return to horizontal. They also stick out pretty far and consequently I tend to brush them with my leg and inadvertently push them up when I duck walk the bike, where they stay stuck until I manually flip them back down. The pivot pins are not intended to be removed so I can't easily insert modern return springs. And the way the pegs mount to the frame is arcane enough that modern pegs would not be an easy swap. Can they be converted to be fixed pegs in M class, or do they need to be the original unaltered folding pegs?

Jon,Im sorry, I really dont know about the rules for pegs, Maybe start a Question of the exact one you asked me,Because ther sure are guys that can tell you Anything & Everything !!

Now as for RWB, If you want to know about that , Oh boy can I tell you about that...
My record of should I go , Goes as far back as you prob ?
2011 , I started planning on Really doing this as Ive been dreaming of Bonneville my whole life,First loving Spirit of America & Breedlove, Then Gabelich in The Blue Flame, Then I got into bikes,The love of my life,ANd Don Vesco was it for me,
2012, I had done all safety wiring and was kinda ready , But a lot of stress at the job,I wasnt feeling well and knew it was something,End up after some doctor visits,High blood pressure,But all this right when I had to decide,
2013 I signed up and was ready, 3 Weeks before leaving,My GM at work quit, I had to take over and there was no chance of vacation.
2014 RWB, I thought the same way as you,Only 2 runs , Might be bad, Well between wait times and bad weather and having to leave on Monday ,I only got one run in, But I ran Bonneville.
2015 Rained out
2016 I ran RWB again, Ran 135 and was ready to move to the 5 mile track,Nope, RWB you can only run the shortest track,With a Ducati an 999CCs Traction is bad on a 1 mile build up, So I sucked it up and left..
2017 Gonna Run AMA, HAd a Electrial problem in Teck,Didnt Make it,Whew,That was tough..
If your talking bout running under100, You could Run RWB, If you want more runs pay again,U get four runs in, Still less than an AMA class
But The one thing, As you said when you were there, The people you meet, Man o man ,Are they good, The big guys of the sport are the nicest easy to talk to guys, I forgot a funnel went to the guy across the pits to borrow one,This guy was so damn nice anything you need we have come back any time,Weve been friends since ,His name is AL Lamb, Hes going for 300 On a sit up Honda , Im praying for 150 , And one last thing,When your there you may not set the world on fire like the big guys,When you back and you start talking about running Bonneville ,People stop what there doing to listen to you, Because For each racer that runs Bonneville,Theres a million that dream about it someday. Thanks For letting me go on,, Don

The passenger foot pegs must be removed. You can't run with them, up or down. See page 29 of the rule book.

Thanks Don, I have removed the passenger pegs. I was asking about whether the rider pegs can be rigid or if they must be the stock folders on an M frame. I don't see anything specific in the rules, but I don't want to get caught out if it's one of those things that is subject to interpretation.

Doc..........I run in M-class with rigid pegs............on your CB77 you could convert to set-backs with the original equipment and mount the shifter-lever directly to the shaft......pattern would be reversed. Assuming your motor is nearly stock and 15-30 sprockets, I would bring a selection of jets and 2 or 3 larger rear sprockets with appropriate chain links.

Awesome Scrambler, thanks! I do have the pegs mounted on the rearmost holes. I really wanted to do a shaft mount reverse pattern shifter, partly because I usually ride a reverse pattern bike. Some super rare and spendy CYB rearsets sit far enough back to allow for a shaft mount shifter but, dadgummit, the stock pegs on the rearmost mount hole don't seem to leave enough room for a lever that is long enough to work. The stub on the shaft that connects the shift rod can't be flipped 180 degrees either. Making up some custom rearset mounts would be a chore because of the way they mount to the peg brackets. So for now I'm just using a long rod with the stock shift pattern setup.

Motor is stock except for a Hall effect ignition. I had planned to bring 15 and 16 tooth front sprockets and a 30 rear, and a bunch of different mains and jet needles. I'll start looking for a 32 and 34 for the rear and extra links.

Thanks so much for the help, guys. Been working in a bit of a vacuum for few months now and it's nice to talk to someone besides myself about some of these things. Tomorrow is safety wire day. Gotta go clean Home Depot out of 1/16" drill bits.

One guys I rode with and me had superhawks.  They would barely hit redline in top gear on pavement near sea level with a good tuck and a skinny teenager on the seat and stock gearing.  The standard sprockets might be a good starting point.

Yeah and around 95 mph top speed is what I have been reading. Still sorting a couple things before I can make a top speed run. Going to start with stock gearing and slightly smaller than stock diameter tires and see where it stands. @Old Scrambler - thanks for scaring those rear sprockets up. I just might take you up on your offer to try the 32.

OK, folks. I is officially registered. Lord help us all. My bud Michael will also be riding the bike. We're headed to the drag strip Friday to continue the shakedown. Worked out the peg issue by clamping the pivots with hose clamps. Found some bits and pieces laying around and I may be able to fab up a shift lever that fits directly onto the shifter shaft after all. Safety wiring is just about complete. Guess I'd better get going on number plates next. Sounds like a job for the cheapo laser cutter.
