took my streamliner for a practice run and the top of my head hits the rollbar tubing with s f I padding at the top. only about 1/2 inch of clearance between the helmet and padding. I want to remove just the center tube and replace with plate covering the top. I have some 1/8 inch cold roll plate. is this thick enough ?

Eighth is plenty thick, throw a picture of it on here so we can see what bar you are removing. Are there other bars up there?

On my liner with two bars (front and rear connected with 1/8"plate) I could get in ok but not out in a situation similar to what you describe. (screw up on mock up). Removed the front bar. Ran that way several years with no questions on tech. then one year was told 'No, NO". Trip to SLC to a nice guy pro welder who on Sunday night opened his basement shop, bent a bar and welded in place with more clearance. Had to modify body work to fit. Back to running. Wish I remembered that fellow's name. What a great guy and thing to do for a fellow racer.
You need 3" clearance to the bars and you need bars front and rear and IMO just a plate connecting partial ones won't fly. Ask Steve Davies, John Bjorkman or Joe Timney (Delaware chassis works). Contact info pp198-199 in the 2018 rule book.

Jack, I think he is talking about a bar connecting the front and rear bar.
Bob, you should have front and rear connected by more than just a plate... that is why I asked if you have other tubes. We solved the space issue by having bars to the sides of center. Close enough that helmet can't go thru but allows more headroom. The old car was built this was as well, and then plated between the bars. I don't think just a plate will fly in tech.... but contact as advised

Thanks, misunderstood.( but 1/2" with padding and then bar removed only gets maybe 2" additional, still needing padding (flat 45.1 SFI rather than tube padding) Still may not meet the clearance rule but..... Suspect anything out of the "ordinary" will get a close look. Better have it cleared. good luck with your build. :cheers:

sorry for the delay , got tied up . . the last photo shown is exactly what I"ll end up with , the side tubes on mine are about 2 inches lower. 1/8 inch plate will go over the top connected to front, rear, and side tubes . will us flat type s f I padding on top. will end up with the correct clearance on top. the side clearance is spot on.

You might want to roll that plate to increase width.

I also would suggest rolling the plate i /O O\ this raise it us under the to of the main hoops and raise it as much as you can .120 wall is the minim. tube diameter I used 1/4" which may be over kill-- but I have never had any tech issues. This makes the sides way to long but gives you the idea I just came to the top of the side tubes and fit it to the hoops by bevel grinding.

yes will roll the top plate- 1/8 cold roll- same radius as hoop, layed on top of hoop , this will give me the room I need . thanks all. check out- smith creek dry lake- Nevada. 7 miles of hard concrete, a bit bumpy, but way flat. its about a 4 hour drive for me
