Title: How to prove title to my race car
Post by: fastesthonda_jim on March 21, 2018, 12:24:58 PM
I'm going to be shipping my race car out of the country later this year and the Federales want to make sure I am not stealing it, i.e., I have to prove I have a Title.
Since it is a "ground up" build there is no VIN, no registration, no smog, no lights, etc., etc.
Anyone have any experience in doing this, or thoughts on how it can be done?

Can it be treated as an OHV?

My first experience with asking about this ended up with them wanting recites for everything that went into building the car. And I mean everything. But I just sold my roadster overseas. Mike Spacek is  handling that. I would ask him.

I was a motorcycle dealer in the late 60's and we got Manufacture's Statement of Origin with the bikes.  They would be turned in to the state when we sold a new bike and then a title was created that went to the owner.

A few years later I started making bikes from new parts and need some way to sell them and get them titled.  I took a Manufacture's Statement of Origin I still had for a bike I never sold and copied it and put in my business name where it had Suzuki as the manufacture.  I then took it to a courthouse in Wyoming and gave it to the clerk without explaining anything just as if it would of been from Suzuki.  She did the paperwork and created a title for the bike.  See if you can find a MSO to copy.

Might need to go to some smaller town to do this where they might be a little more naive but bet it would still work.  I'm making a camper trailer now and as what was mentioned above was told to keep my receipts for parts and show them to get a title, but this isn't a motorized vehicle and trailers can commonly be homemade.

Not too hard to ship a race car. For U.S. customs, you need 4 color pictures, one of each side of the car, the log book (that's basically your "title") and a picture of the chassis number - in your case it would be the SCTA/BNI tag.

Willi, have you actually done this?  And have you done it recently - at least in the post 9-11/Homeland Security days?

Why not ask Marlo, he just went through it?

Yes, Jim, I have done it before, and this is current info from my shipper as of TODAY.
I'd strongly advise to let professionals handle the export (and re-import).
Could steer you in the right direction if need be.

Thanks, Willi,
It's just that the biggest problems encountered last summer were U.S. Customs and all their mind numbing paperwork.
I'm just trying to get a head start.
And I'll check with Marlo... although he's not back yet, and a bunch of the problems happened on the return.

Hi Jim
Are you bringing the car back to the US?
If you are you can ship on a 'carnet'    It is a basically a promise to return the car to the US.
We have done this plenty of times from Australia. I pay 50% of the value of my race bike as a bond which is refundable or $350 into an insurance scheme.
You will need a list of what you are taking. Race car, safety gear, tools  etc. They may check what comes back against what goes out.
I have heard of vehicles which have gone missing and the relevant government does not do much checking.

cheers    Bones

The bike was shipped to Wales in 2015 and a professional broker was paid to make sure it got there and back.  The motorcycle arrived back in the US and the A-holes in US customs would not let it be shipped to me.  The broker was aware of their contractual responsibility to have the bike delivered to my home.  They hired an attorney to get the bike through customs.  I doubt if the broker made any money on the deal after they paid the attorney.  It was to my benefit to hire professionals to handle the shipping.

Make sure your paperwork clearly identifies the vehicle as U.S. made entirely from U. S. parts. This allows it to be re-entered without duty.

Along these lines -- there's a dissertation in the Tech/FAQ section on this site that was written by some of our Brit brethren on the subject of getting a car INTO the US.  I haven't partaken of said tome recently but there might be helpful information in there for you, too.  It's the fourth article down - but I include the whole page 'cause I betcha lots of you haven't looked there to see what else you might find.
