Title: Electric water pumps:
Post by: Rex Schimmer on February 06, 2018, 09:01:52 PM
We have discussed electric water pumps many time and I am always a little reluctant to suggest using one for an actual race engine water pump as they are typically not capable of making any kind of pressure and still have sufficient flow to cool a race engine. I happen across this Bosch electric water pump in "Race Engine Technology" and this looks like the real thing! 160 liter/min (73 gallons/min) at a pressure of 1.5 bar (approx 22 psi). Now that is mechanical pump performance at a big savings in power to drive the pump.

Go to:http://www.bosch-motorsport.de/content/downloads/Products/resources/33818018571/en/pdf/Electric_Coolant_Pump_ECP_160_Datasheet_51_en_33518712459.pdf

Check out all of the specs and performance. Not sure of the price but if it is German it is expensive although most race engines are pretty costly too!

I understand that Davies Craig produces pumps that meet the specs needed....

Davis Craig make good electric water pumps and are one of the few companies that actually give flow vs. pressure graphs but look at the graph for their EWP150 pump, at 9 psi back pressure the flow is zero! The Bosch pump is rated at 160 liter/mim at 22 psi back pressure, which is more of what you would want for a race engine.

Rick,
No doubt that it is expensive, it is German (Bosch) and made using AM (Additive Manufacturing). I have tried to find the pricing but it is apparently to new to have published pricing.

Yes, 60 amps at 12 volt is just about 1 horse power, which is pretty representative of the power required to move 160 liters of water at the rated pressure and considering the pump efficiency which they claim is 60%. Sure would like to see the insides.
