Title: A Couple of Questions...
Post by: Frank06 on September 14, 2017, 06:16:05 PM
Are there two courses at Lake Gairdner (short and long?) and how long are they?

How would one characterize typical traction and course condition as compared to Bonneville in recent years?

Many thanks!

Frank

This has been the "usual" track layout recently (when salt conditions allow)

the two tracks are genarallly pretty good
the hardest part is usually getting on to the lake later in the week
this year we had problems with track two, which is the short course, being soft
We aim for track two the be three miles and track one to be nine miles
And there are no hotels, it's camping

Thank for the info.  It looks like there could be as much as 5 miles run up if conditions are good?  Even 4 miles is excellent.

Next year's event will be extended an extra 3 days to cater for a FIA motorcycle event  :-D

Let me suggest this to any Americans thinking of making the trip this year to spectate.

Qantas is doing a promotional price offer through their e-mail marketing for passage on the new 787 Dreamliner starting at less than $800.00 round trip into Melbourne.  You can get that price for Speedweek in OZ next March.

It's not likely to get cheaper than that, and yes, we're eying up the savings account . . .

Takes me about two days
It's not that it's a huge long drive, it's just that the higway speed limits are enforced
You can fly from Melbourne to Adelaide which is a short flight
Then rent a vehicle there which will shorten the drive by 8 - 10 hours

Probably depends on if he's trying to smuggle fruit past the authorities.

Sid, it's no bother.  On this Forum we don't discriminate because of a racer's chosen sexual perversions.  Leave him alone!

Qantas, yep, they won't have a problem with that until you get to the gate. Then they'll wheel out a six foot three woman who they poached from a Siberian labor camp to burn holes in you with her eyes who'll then announce to the assembled travellers that the plane has bee delayed because of your baggage, then the baggage handlers will crush it's into an 18x18x12 and they'll charge you $145 per kg, no I'm not kidding.

From our experience last year:

Traction - we had good traction.  Our 1000 hp 68 Camaro ran 243 at Bonneville in 2012.  It ran 249 at Lake Gairdner in 2017

Road into Lake Gairdner will beat the heck out of equipment.  Be prepared.  Tie everything down, especially in your camper.
You are so far in the Outback, there is nothing but flies out there, but plenty of them.

wishing everyone fast and safe runs. To Marlo, Les and crew hoping everything has been fixed and you get a great record. I know the Freud wishes he could be there to take photos. We are all waiting for any updates when you start runs.

Any updates may be slow in coming. One of the things about Lake Gairdineer is that it's about 70 miles from mobile phone and internet. There a landline at the racers camp. And a pay phone at the station.

Hey Graham, what is the phone number at the race station... my guess it can be used for emergency contact for racers....

From when I went down there in 2004
Mt. Ives Station (08) 8648 1817
Fax: (08) 8648 1811
These should still work.  I can't imagine the pace of technical updates is too rapid out there.

Those phone numbers are correct Jim. To call from the USA, the country code is 61, the steps are:

1. First dial 011, the U.S. exit code.
2. Next dial 61, the country code for Australia.
3. Then dial the area code (1 digit).
4. Finally the phone number (8 digits).

So the whole number for Mount Ive Station would be: 011 61 08 8648 1817

Here's their website, bit of history of the region on one of the pages, if your're interested...

PJQ, your description doesn't add up with the numbers for me. On the area code you say 1 digit but your example is "08". Not trying to be a butt. I just want to be sure because I'm heading that way.

You drop the 0 from 08 if adding the 61

Be aware the phone at the racers camp is in one of the sleeping quarters , if a lot of calls come in at irregular hours it could become disconnected

Also one of the racers is looking at getting a Sat wifi for live tuning, so there is the possibility of better communication this year

When they refer to "the Station" substitute "ranch" it means the large pastoral holding "Mount Ive Station" who have the lease on the land at Lake Gairdners edge.
In case you guys aren't getting the Goggles cell (called a mobile here)is 0400 818 080

I being the owner of said sleeping quarters  will most definitely disconnect said phone if it keeps waking me up as I do every year ....please be aware of the time differences between the US and Australia

March 12th - 16th.  Their days start somewhat earlier than yours, even more so than ours.

No live video coverage lined up yet, communications are very limited due to the remote location.  Usually recorded videos surface post meet.

+1 on everyone staying safe, having fun, and going fast.
