Team Graybeards will be supporting two (2!) new turbo Sportsters.
(OK, one is a Buell)

#6062 is getting rebuilt to have rear suspension, in hopes of 2018 WoS.

Just wanted to give everyone and update. Dennis S. and Larry V. are making a trip to the flats this Thursday the 24th.  We are well aware of the track conditions experienced at Speed Week.  At this point we are 'not' planning on using the same tracks as were used during Speed Week. Once Dennis and Larry have had a chance to check things out, we will let you all know what the track layouts will be. We will strive to be honest in reporting what will be available in both distance and surface condition.
Stay tuned for further updates as we get closer, and hang in there.
Monte.

How are the lines at WOS, are the like Saturday at Speedweek or more like Wednesday?  Do they have qualifying and record runs on the last day?

Didn't stick around for the last day, but in 2014, after Speedweek was rained out, but WOS was able to go, there were probably 150 contestants.  I understand that most everybody was able to get all of the runs in they wanted.

I find WOS a lot less chaotic in comparison to Speedweek.  Fewer distractions, cheaper hotels, cooler weather.

Last year we ran the short course at WOS. You could hot lap as quick as you could get ready and pull to the line. The long course looked about like Wed of SW.

We no longer publish the entry list for World of Speed. There are, believe it or not, valid reasons for this. I won't go into it, but it has caused some issues in the past. The actions of a few can cause problems for the rest of us.

Some decent news to report. Dennis and Larry were on on Thursday, they spent several hours scouting for possible track locations. They have found a couple of possibilities. The most promising for our long course, could be approximately seven and a half miles in length and would be situated west of where the pits were located during Speedweek.  That area has been underwater for the last few years and therefore inaccessible, it has dried now and looks pretty promising. They had intended to pull a drag along it, but the motorcycle folks had all the drags in use, working to prep their own courses.
Our short course will most likely use the same track we had prepared for the Test and Tune. It is in decent shape and should come around nicely when worked a little bit.
Dennis and Larry will be going back out again this Thursday and use a drag to further evaluate both tracks and we will post their findings. We feel confident that USFRA will be able to provide the best courses possible considering the thin salt conditions.
If this is how we finalize the location of the tracks, it will mean a very unique layout and changes to how the return roads and turnouts will be situated. Stay tuned to this same"Bat Channel" for more information.

Yes indeed, the schedule has changed for this year. The past few years we would start on the Saturday following Labor Day.  This year we had to move it back a week. After some discussion it was decided to start the racing on Friday rather than Saturday.  So yes everyone, racing starts on September 15th this year.

Yes, I guess "The weather here continues to be warm and dry so things are looking good!"

Friday on my front porch, in Millcreek, about 1600; Temp: a nice even 100* and 06% humids. Wendover doesn't vary much from us with this giant high pressure.
Good hunting, guys...

We have found a track! Thanks to Dennis Sullivan and Larry Volk. After several trips to the salt and hours of checking all areas of the flats, they have found a suitable place for our long course.  It will be a full 5 mile track, matching the normal long course configuration.  The caveat will be that the layout will change in that a safe turnout will be to the right, or freeway side of the course instead of the mountain side.  The emergency turnouts will be made to the mountain side.
The return road will be in between the long and short courses and so the safe turnouts for the short course will be to the left.  I know this will be much different than what most of you are familiar with but salt conditions dictate the change for this year. We will have maps available for all competitors and spectators and make every effort to make this a smooth change over.
Dennis feels confident that the tracks will prove to be much smoother that what was available during Speedweek.  I will be going out to begin dragging the tracks on the 9th of September, so that should give us ample time to get things adequately prepared.
We are looking forward to seeing all of you on the salt. Safe travels.

Thanks for the info Monte. However, turn outs to the right is no problem for the roadsters, lakesters and aussies, it is a problem with the vehicles with large hood scoops. We can not see well to turnout to the right. The last time this was used, I remember a new black studie running into the back of another studie that did not pull far enough forward. It destroyed both cars. The turnouts have to be very wide if possible. It may be the same as speedweek, if you can not turn off safetly then they will just stop on the course and wait for someone to push them off. This makes for a very slow meet.

I remember a number of times when the starter would ask me "Which way are you going to turn out?" -- to make sure that I knew if I was on a left- or right- turn out course.  Between long course and short and rookie and so on -- there are many instances where a "right-turnout-means-all-is-okay" happens.  Maybe you need a periscope to get a little bit of right-side scenery piped in?

Anybody that has an apartment building on the hood can use a truck mirror inside to see down the back alley for turn-out.

Anytime we have to make changes like this we are aware of the issues it places on many of the racers and their machines.  We are always reluctant to make changes but the current salt conditions are forcing our hand. We will do whatever we can to accommodate you all, and clearly mark the turnouts and make them as wide as practical.

So Eric Ritter becomes only the 15th person to go over 400 mph (wheel-driven)?

Vesco information on Facebook suggests both runs were 400+ but neither was a qualifier for the class record.

Nothing official, but the word here on the salt was that they took out the lights on their last run.  There's probably about 15-20 cars in impound, including the two Kiwi Synergy V-8's, the VW D/DS car, an XXF/BFRMR, a couple Karmann Ghias, a G/PS Jetta, 3 Guthrie-Levie bikes, a couple roadsters, a C/BFALT (I think) Stude, and the Twin Scout Indian.  I'm doing this from memory from when I left at 6pm last night, so I may have missed some.  Oh, yeah - a B/DT Didge P/U, too.

Buckeye Bullet came through Tech this morning.  They said they want to do a pre-Shootout shakedown run.  Getting a close look was pretty impressive.  Roger actually sits in a Dallara Indy Car carbon fiber tub that's inside the cage!  First time I've seen a 9-point harness, too.  One of their guys told me it runs at 900 volts and 300 amps!  Anyway, it passed Tech inspection, with no "fix-it for next time" entries in the log book!

The Kiwi's got records in both of their cars this morning, as did the Potter Bros. in their VW TDI V-10 streamliner (made with FlatFire body molds).  They were parked next to each other in impound and made an interesting contrast.  The Kiwi G/GS streamliner is FWD with rear tandem wheels, while the Potter's D/DS is RWD with tandem front wheels!

I had to pull the plug around 1115, but got to see Turbinator launch on its down run.  Although it wasn't perfect, nobody I talked to was complaining about the courses.

Lots of racing today, two Turbinator runs, one with a 420+ and one with no time given, the only thing I heard was the car was at the nine mile and it didn't take it very long to get there.

On the USFRA web site, the long course results for Saturday show just the one Turbinator run, with a highest mile speed of 343.561 mph (exit speed 437.025 mph).  What am I missing?

On Saturday, we heard that it had made a fast run.  However, that must have been erroneous, as they never were in impound on Saturday.  Their qualifying run was around 1100am on Sunday.

Also, I noticed some obvious problems elsewhere in the posted results.

Also, I noticed that the results have the Potter Bros. car listed as D-PS, rather than D-DS.   I don't know where they came up with the old record listed, as it appears not to be correct for either of those classes.  I think Adler had the record at 201+.

I also remember then telling me that it was now the world's fastest VW.

They missed the time in mile 5.

Trickydicky posted "Turbinator run, with a highest mile speed of 343.561 mph (exit speed 437.025 mph)." When Don was still around and running the car my son and I watched it run a 439+ and I think the "out the back" time was over 460. That car is the hardest charging streamliner I have ever seen. If there is a car that can run over 500 wheel driven then give the Turbinator a good course and 6 miles and the trophy!!

I got my "brothers" all mixed up.  The Potter bros. ran a VW, alright, but it was a Jetta, not a streamliner.  Doug Adler's brother, Davidson, ran the Double Eagle streamliner to a new record, while the Potter's came up a bit short.

Is it accurate that there were only 14 new records set at this years event?

So it would seem.  The event was cut a day short - not by rain, but by wind on Friday.

I wish they'd post all the runs so we could see what everybody did on Sunday and Monday.

Look at how few records were set at Speedweek this year. The poor race surface conditions in August were not going to improve any in a months time. A better racing surface is needed but until the idea of Return The Salt is undertaken there's going to be less records set. Plus a whole lot more broken equipment is now taking place from trying to put the power down on the thin and rough surface we now have to run on.   :-(

. . . for the first time, multiple entries were damaged trying to get to the courses.

Amen to that, we will probably spend the rest of the season fixing damage from the tow to and from the short course.

Pepperoni Bros. thought the course was excellent and the drive to pits and both courses the best in years, not one puddle!

I personally thought that the short course was great.  I ran my fastest speed so far of 161.89 and it was the best handling the car has been.  The return roads were comparable or a little better than SpeedWeek.

Now they're showing 16 more on Monday, for a total of 30.

I hear your balls get bigger with age.  :-D
Don't know for sure but hope to find out if I quit procrastinating and can get it back to running condition and get down to Salt Dyno Midwest.
