Title: land speed models at wendover casino
Post by: speedrelic on July 14, 2017, 04:39:41 PM
Does anyone have info regarding the LSR models on display at the Nugget in Wendover? I've seen a couple of photos but would like to know more about the history of the models etc. Also, would like to see additional photos of the cars or have someone take some while you're at Speedweek this year! Thanks for any help.

You certainly won't get any help at the Stateline.  Last I saw they needed to be kept from the public, and, as I remember, the info available wasn't that great.

Of course, as usual, I'm often wrong.  Just ask the boss.

Very nice models, but difficult to find the place. There is also the EELCO streamliner on display. NOT the right place for that stuff !
What's with the Museum project ?

We see the "display" once a year -- as we're going into the banquet hall for the 200 MPH Club dinner Wednesday of SpeedWeek.  do we think of going there at other times?  Do we remember to tell people about the display?

Nope.

So where exactly is the display? Is the Stateline Casino same as the Nugget? Does anyone known who made the models? Scale or material used? I  have someone willing to take some photos for me while there for Speedweek, so it would be good to know  where they are located. Thanks.

No, it's N72727. I only said it's not the right place because when we saw the poor EELCO in a dark corner of the second floor with many children playing around and two of them siting on the poor streamliner we took some photos before it was destroyed. Hope it"s still there in good shape and that somebody will find a proper place for it one day, so that more people can see it.

Not easy to take good photos. The models are behind plexiglas.

Yes the Nugget is the old Stateline Casino,, I know where the display is, but do not remember the names of the various parts of the Casino to give you direction to find it, just ask one of the Casinos staff, it's worth a look  8-)

Go through the atrium and walk up the stairs to the banquet room on the 2nd floor. There are several land racing 'objects de art (including the EELCO streamliner) in the hallway. I guess they were left behind when the Stateline bailed....... and the Nugget doesn't know what to do with them........

Is it known if these are hand carved and painted or hand detailed mass produced models ? I could appreciate them more knowing that .

These models are all one of kind....hand carved by a amateur wood carver about 40 years ago....in the earlier time they had an information about the artist
close to the display.

The models were first displayed in the early sixties. They are all hand carved from wood and he did try to keep them in scale with each other. I was able to photgraph the models out of the case for two different articles for two different magazines. They are very nicely done. If I remember correctly they were modeled by a guy from the Denver, Colorado area. I think the model builder was associated with the Kenz and Lesley lsr team.
I wrote two articles, one was published in Model Car Science magazine and the other was in Car Model Magazine. I'll have to check with the hotel people and do another photo shoot of the models for a magazine article.
