This came up in the Bonneville pictures a year or so ago. I did a facebook search and contacted Rod Hynes, whos name is water marked on pic. I never got any feedback from him. Does anybody here know the owner/car that this engine was in? Judging by the pop can on left side of picture I guessing it was taken in the late 70s?

But that plate proclaiming proudly that the car is "Powered by Chrysler" kinda stumps me. . .or did GM farm the Poncho out to Chrysler?
-
Looks like a chopped up 318-340-360.
Sandwiches look tasty . . .
-
The engine is definitely Pontiac, take a good look at the curved valley rail & the valve cover.

Could that be the "Tempest in a T pot" car of Benham and Hurley in 1966?

Gotta-B.
The Red Head!!! Wow!!!

Thanks jdincau.
This engine was up for sale a few years ago. Show up on the Pontiac site with a link to craigslist. Chasing a unicorn?
Note the blower hub on crank in the first pic posted at top of thread. I'm about to post a shot of modified V8 manifold
cut down for a 4 banger. And the header makes this a dead ringer for being the same engine.
-
Yep, gotta be the same one.
Sid.

Craig, Is the engine in your possession?

Doesn't look to me that it's any blower manifold that was ever produced- just something put together for this four cylinder.

I'm guessing it was Ron Benham back then but Norm Benham might be a place to start, I think he's a Rod Riders member but somebody here should know how to contact him.

Ron passed away several years ago.

I took this photo of the 'Tempest in a T Pot' Modified Fuel Roadster at Bonneville in 1971. Car was driven by Bob McMillan and ran a Pontiac Tempest 4-cylinder engine, half of a 389. Also ran a supercharged Tempest. Was a beautiful modified built by Ron Benham. Not sure where it has ended up.

Thanks AAFA Rod for the time line on this great looking car! Hope it's still around.

I found this photo on Michael LeFevers's facebook page. Perhaps it is the blown configuration. States as a question "Mickey & Fitz changing bearings with the blown Tempest 4 engine at March AFB?"

Danny Thompson answered my ?? stating this picture was indeed at March AFB during his (Mickey) multi-vehicle record fest.

The engine, along with all the spare parts are now owned by The World of Speed Museum in Wilsonville, Oregon. The engine is on display in the "dragster/lakester" body along with several other of Mickey's cars. When I was last there they also had the 4 engine streamliner which was on loan from the Thompson family.
If You are in the Northwest You need to check out the Museum. It is located right on I-5 just south of Portland and has a ton (literally) of great cars from Nascar to Indy to Drag Racing to famous motorcycles to hot rods of the forties and fifties on up.
Lot's of Landspeed cars and bikes and they rotate the display vehicles with other famous museums and private collectors so even if You have already been there, its worth going again and again.

Are you sure, Bob?
I just went thru all of the pictures that I took (a lot) and the only 4-cylinder seems to be in Attempt 1, which is not visible but, based on the body, appears to be unblown.
Are you thinking about the 2-cylinder?

Well Rod Hynes got back to me regarding this car. The first picture was indeed from 71 as previously stated. He sent a couple older photos of the car so I had to share.
-
Well here are a few more of the same car/engine...
