Title: What class for a 250cc vespa?
Post by: Mobacken Racing on October 26, 2016, 01:47:39 PM
A friend of mine asked me what class he would run in with his 250cc vespa, I consulted my SCTA rulebook but couldn´t figure it out. Anyone who can fill me in on this?

Would rather depend on any modifications made to the Vespa. And I think they have a minimum wheel and tire diameter. Not sure scooters can run SCTA events.

For AMA and/or FIM records, BMST would find a class for him.................otherwise, the BMST offers the 'Run What Ya Brung' category if he just wants to see how fast he can go........and at about one-half of the registration fee for record contenders.

This is not under the SCTA heading.  And they do have a min. wheel diameter.  In the last few years, I know a competitor did run (or enter) SpeedWeek with a compliant one.  I don't remember if it ran or was just entered in a rain-out year.

J. billig set a record in P-AG in 2013 and Scooter's yearbook shows her on a scooter.  But don't ask me how that was possible, because the wheels are not 15".  Must be because it was running in "Production" class with original wheels that weren't 15".  You'll really have to send an email to BMST tech, because they don't usually like to answer tech questions on the forum.

Thank you for your replies, I´ll tell him to get in touch with the BMST tech guys so he can sort the rules out.

Don't go by my memory, but I think that sidecar motorcycles don't have the minimum wheel size requirement.

I believe that you are right. However this poster makes no mention of a sidecar, so I am at a loss as to your point.

Get him to run a Scarebeo 250ie  and that will sort out the wheel size issue and ask for a rule variation on the rear wheel

Anders - might be worthwhile if your buddy got in touch with these guys. I'd have though that Elvington in the UK would be suitable for the sort of speeds targeted.

The SCTA have a minimum wheel size of 10" for the bike and 5" for the sidecar.  But I don't think there is a scooter class per se.   If you decide to run SpeedWeek you may have to run in the 250 sidecar class.  Which then might bring up speed ratings for the tires.
