Title: Any News from BMST?
Post by: donpearsall on August 29, 2016, 09:45:42 PM
They have been racing at BMST for 2 days now. Anyone have any news? Speeds? Track conditions? The web site has nothing and the Facebook page just has a few photos, but no news. Is anyone there now who can comment? I hope things are going well!

Lots of bikes have been running. Val T has managed a couple of good sighting runs. Eva has put in a couple of runs on the electric liner. Tom Mellor looks to be doing well. All going well, and strong so far.

Valerie Thompson reporting that she went 286.567 mph one-way this morning.

That probably makes her the fastest female on a motorcycle (for what it's worth).

internatinal course fantastic from reports...

Greg Watters 246 + on one of his first passes

Kim Krebs 220 + on 750 hurt motor

Hiro Koiso 244 + Vtwin

AL Lamb 237 + on shakedown run

Erin Sills picked up about 7-8 mph on her "production" motorcycle
from SCTA SW...to over 210 mph 1000 cc

and that is very early in the runs...

Just returned from BMST
Wow, 2014 was my first year, It was wet and sticky , When you walked your shoes were platform style in 10 steps.
2016 Hard packed, A little bumpy, Hot out , Hard , For Me to get traction, My pit man said it looked like a small cloud around my rear wheel at high speed.
Im pretty sure Mark Bjorkland did 205 on the Dual Motor Ducati he lays on .
When Hiro starts his bike in the pits, You can feel it, Like when someone on your block has a hopped up drag racer and fires it up in the garage, You can feel the power...
The big long electric bike Kaz , I think thats his name is running was in tech in front of us, It had to be 2 1/2 hours in tech just for him..
Speaking of Tech, The People that do tech and the Volunteers everywhere at the course, Pre Stage, Starting line, Check in , Wow, What a bunch of nice people, They blow me away !
More later

Any news on Guy Martin and the Triumph?.

I do not think the Triumph liner was running at the BMST event.  What about Val T in the old Bub7 ?

Saw something on Google that Guy broke the old Triumph record by about 40mph.
Don't know if there is such a thing but that's what they wrote.
Valerie went 294 and change.

Even faster yesterday - 304.514 mph for a kilometre and 304.263 mph for the mile.

Still a way to go before she sets an official record.

Eva upped her own class record(s) earlier in the week (subject to official confirmation by the FIM and/or AMA).

248.746 mph (kilometre) and 248.700 mph (mile).

Fractionally over 400 km/h for those who like round numbers.

Weather was perfect very mild to zero winds most of the week, temps fairly warm at up to 95

Lines moved well, not a lot of waiting , i think one of the smoothest run events yet  to all involved

Track was still showing the salt is not well, but the track preparation has made a pretty good surface to run on

Salt is sort of grainy this year and still thin if we siphoned our water tank directly onto the surface it cut through the salt to mud in a couple of seconds ,other pondages near the flats and all the way to SLC were low level i think this dry season is generally helping but a light rain may help the surface at the moment as its getting dryer than ideal

Its a yr where the heavy bikes (and from Speedweek results cars too) ,  can make the most of the surface some of the much better designed bikes to ours were not getting there power down

Our heavy bikes did ok, but the busa was still 12mph down on 2012 best due to wheelspin
Kim ran the busa to a best of 244mph and a 241mph record
Jim took the bodywork off and ran a best of 224mph with a 217mph record
I ran 2 classes, the busa to a best of 246mph and record of 243,
and the naked 600 ran same speed both ways for a 180mph record

Big thanks to Delvene, Linnea, Ken and crew and in tech to Drew, Curtis and everyone who helped in some pretty warm conditions

Thanks for the report Maj, and a big congratulations on your big speeds and records!

That is a major bummer about the thin salt. I sure hope it is better next year.

Guy Martin was not there. I hear he may be at the Cook Shootout.
The salt seemed good from what I heard talking to racers at our marker. Quite a few records were set, and a lot of good speeds were clicked. The weather held until after the racing with a couple of rain showers coming in late afternoon and overnight on Thursday.

So, who's up for next year then???

The salt was very strange this year.  there is a thin layer on top with a mud layer under it and then more salt under the mud layer.   Not sure what needs to be done to get rid of that layer of mud.  A well respected authority told me it needs several good days of really hard rains and then a drying out session and the salt would be fabulous. But he asked me not to use his name publicly due to all the gloom and doom folks on this forum lately.

Hi Scrambler.
Noooooooooo, I missed the beer. Flip. Sorry about that. We were sort of busy down at mile 1, and I got zero time off for good behavior. Perhaps I wasn't as well behaved as I thought though.

Next time buddy. We will definitely catch up next time.

Hiro, what a man! It was so good to see him back out there later on that day. Man is he tough!

DW, yes it is isn't it. But the people are even more infectious. The salt flats get me every time I drive beside them. More so as I drive onto them. I still remember the first time I set foot on that salt. The feeling of awe. The tingle. a sense of achievement just to actually set foot on there. I know that sounds a bit dramatic, but it is how I felt. Every time I set foot back on there I feel the same. But as impressive and imposing a landscape that it is, it is the people that bring it to life. I could photograph that place everyday for a year and it would be a fascinating muse of constant change. But it is all of you that make it such an enjoyable and memorable arena full of life.

Now then, google, flights...........

I had a great time at BMST '16. After so many wet years and a cancellation this year redeemed it all. The weather was perfect all week and even the boat ramp was dry. The salt was bone shaking rough to and from the track but the short course was in fair condition. Registration was a two hour horror but track waits dropped so much after day two I could hot lap without even stopping at prestage. I run a 500cc side car and ran with the dead weights as well as a passenger. My speeds were off from previous years but by the last day I had the bike sorted out and tied the record. We are definitely coming back.

Comet, Boy dont I know what you mean, For me , Its only 2014 & 2016, But I had a weird thing,The 2015 Cancel  !
There were times and you know, We all read it here and a lot of other places, Frankly there were times that I thought, What if its 5 years, Or 10 years, What if we cant go back,, And then, Just like that , There we were a month ago,  I have to say because of all that talk I really felt more this time , Plus in 2014 it was my first year and I just couldnt wrap my head around it all .
So 2016 . I made more friends, Did more , Ran Better, But I know everyone will agree, You get out of the Truck on Friday or Sat Look around like ,, Oh Hell Yes Bonneville, And in the blink of an eye, Four or Five days goes by .  Whew...
And I cant tell you how many people like me were planning things for next year in there mind on the drive home .
Bonneville, Its everything you think it is ,   And More......................

My wife got a Facebook announcement that said that the new AMA landspeed records were now posted on the AMA websight.  Be darned if I can find them.  Anybody got a clue about the runs and records?
Tom

Found it! It's under the "News" heading, not the landspeed racing heading.

Hi folks,

My wife and I were first time spectators this year. I've been a race-goer for many years, from club racing to Formula One and lots in-between and I have to say this was one of the finest events, with the nicest people, that I have experienced. Of course I am now pouring over the records, dreaming of finding a class I might be able to run a competitive bike in...

I shot a little video from our canopy at the very end of the pits, catching bikes as they ran through the third mile. Had a few technical issues and it's not great, but maybe some will enjoy -

Nice video Doc.  I suggest you post an intro and list a location.   This is a diverse group someone might be a neighbor.  Plus if you don't Slim will force a location on for you.

I admit that I don't really live on Bainbridge Island. It's the highbrow neighborhood where we have our offices. My house is on the poor side of a Norwegian fishing village down the road called Poulsbo. There is another "town" called Scandia further down the road from my house. It's composed of a bible church and a punkin' patch. Hope your Skandia at least has a karaoke bar or vacant car dealership or something.
Kinda wish I was closer to Bellingham. The Super Rat Double Duc is from there and was amazing to see it run on the salt.

Sometimes I think you might be too isolated from your own little world UP there

Doc, Skandia, Michigan, is pretty much a memory.  There's the post office/township hall and a small engine repair shop and Dennis Takala's sawmill.  Once US41 was re-routed a bunch of years ago -- the town has kinda dwindled from an inauspicious little fart to dang near nothing.

And we like living in a township with population 987.  There's a stop light just 16 or so miles form our house. :-D

Sounds just like my town. Well, 40 years ago. Nowadays we are a Navy town (sub base Bangor) and a stone's throw from one of the biggest nuclear arsenals in the country. Gives one a warm fuzzy feeling. Literally.

At BMST I thought I heard an announcement over the somewhat intermittent radio broadcast that a bike from Bremerton, WA was running. That's just down the road from me, another big Navy town (shipyard). Does anyone know if I heard right?
