Post by: Tom Liberatore on July 31, 2016, 03:56:51 PM
Does anyone know what the schedule is? Will racing start on Sat.or Sun.?
Thanks!

Well, they haven't posted a detailed schedule yet, but the last couple of times it started on Saturday.  And, their website says Sept 10 (Saturday) to 13.  I would expect Tech to be open on Friday, Sept 9.

In order to put the rumors to rest, we will be hosting the World of Speed this year.  Racing will start on Saturday September 10th and continue until Tuesday September 13th.  You can check our website, www.saltflats.com for up to date information.
Having said that, there is more I we would like to share with you.  We are confident that we can provide a very good short course as well as an additional track for the 130/150 vehicles and the Volkswagen's. We will do all in our power to find and make ready a viable long course.  We do not want to promise something that we cannot deliver.  We are going out during the motorcycle event to scout possible locations, this will include looking at the international course. We will post updates on our website, Facebook page and here, stay tuned for more information as it becomes available

My plans are to visit this event for the first time without a entry.  But, I'm going to include some sight seeing on the way up and back.  If there is anything I could do in terms of making a detour to get anything from your house to the races you might check with me.  Have some room, not a lot.  Dallas-Albuquerque-Vegas-Ely up there.  Wendover- Kanab-Farmington-Sante Fe, Dallas back.  Looking forward to the event.

Dennis Sullivan and Larry Volk are currently on the salt scouting for possible track locations and layouts.  They are meeting up with Tom Burkland as he is already there working the BMST event.  I am headed out this weekend and will start dragging.  I will post updates and photos as the work progresses.

By the way, Monte - great article in the USFRA newsletter.  Anyone who hasn't read it should.  They will come away with a greater appreciation as to what it takes to put on these events.

Good luck this year, and be safe.

One late night, many years ago, Nancy and I got the pleasure(?) of driving one of those old drag trucks to try to make a funky course good.  The truck was one of the old beasts, all right -- it had many modern cornveniences, but lighting wasn't one of them.  We were asked to stay about 100 feet behind the other truck - that did have lights.  I was to try to stay in line -- but dammit, with both a pretty lightning show going on towards SLC and Nancy sitting next to me -- well, I guess I know why I haven't driven a drag truck since then...

It's kind of strange how each event I spend several hours beforehand just sitting on my buttocks in the drag truck, but then once the racing starts I spend several hours standing with not much time to sit.......one extreme to the other.

Jon, I think I remember that year.  Was it by any chance the year that Ron Hall set a record with his Studebaker Avanti?  I seem to remember the salt was especially bad that year and we did some dragging at night to smooth things as best we could.  And yes one of the drags left weaving marks all the way down and back!
Title: Re: World of Speed 2016
Post by: Seldom Seen Slim on August 31, 2016, 07:08:07 PM
Monte, don't even hint at what might have been making me weave the truck -- if indeed it was Nancy, not the beers that I've known some drag truck drivers (okay - they're SCTA guys) quaff while dragging.  I sure tried to keep it straight. . .

I don't remember the Avanti record - but your description of the track/repair attempts sounds right.  The thunderstorm on the distant horizon was cool-o-matic!

Hey, kiddos, here's the scoop:  I'm NOT going to make it to World of Speed 2016.  I need to pretend I'm running Kudos Laser some of the time, yanno.  So without me going out to the event:

Who wants to learn how to and to do it -- run the audio streaming equipment?

Seriously -- I've asked USFRA if it's okay if I solicit one of youse guys to do the chore.  Ron Christensen will be there announcing -- but the workload is different for USFRA (vs. SCTA) and he demurred when I asked him.

It's easy -- really.  Should be about 5 min in the morning and maybe three min in the evening.  During the rest of the day - keep an ear open to the stream and if it's dead -- go turn it back on.

I'll send you the laptop and the wi-fi jetpack that I use to create our own hotspot.  USFRA will help you with the setup - in case you decide you're a doofus and can't handle such a critical task.  Plug in power, plug in audio, turn on wi-fi, just about done already.

Wanna help?   Your name will go down in landracing.com history.

For whatever that's worth.

Slim,   I was thinking of volunteering to help you this year, but last week, I slipped and fell, and my right ankle is broken. No driving for me until mid October. The Red Garter has a room that was cancelled this morning.  Y'all have a great meet, go fast, and be safe. Ole Don

Thanks for even thinking of it, Don.  Broke ankles are fun, aren't they?  I crunched my left one last October -- the sucker hurt most of the winter.

Anyone else?  I sure would like some help out there - can't get to Wendover myself and don't want to NOT stream without really trying.  Somebody wanna help?  Crew member that's willing to get to the salt each morning a couple of minutes before record runs -- at 8AM?

Get in touch.  We'll all thank you.

Been out dragging for the past two days.  The salt is as dry and hard as I have ever seen it.  When pulling the drag it makes a sound as through I was on concrete or asphalt, I have never experienced this before.  Having said that, the first two miles are rough and bumpy.  We are going to add some weight to the drag using 55 gallon drums full of water.  I was able to drag to the six and one half mile but the salt crust is so thin out there that to be safe, our current plans are to end the timing at the 4 mile marker.
I will keep you all updated as we move along in our preparations.

I hate to be the bearer of bad tidings but the olives, peppers, and pepperoni that I like to spread around the land speed community are not going to happen this year. Porkpie will be devastated. A curing disaster rendered the olives into compost this year, a crop failure of the tamed Jalepinos made them in short supply, and we're all going to have to lump it on the pepperoni because my buddy the butcher somehow forgot to fill my order for a case of fine west coast pepperoni. Oh well, I've got a small jar of peppers for the USFRA to fight over and some special carrots for Monte's vision and that will have to be jolly good for this year. See you on the Salt!

Girls and boys, I've got Tom Liberatore (a/k/a Peter Pepperoni) signed up to get the audio streamed.  He's confident that he can make it work.  I sent him brand-new tomato soup cans with nice binder twine between 'em, so that part of the system should be primo.

He won't roll into town 'til Friday, he told me, but pretty soon thereafter he might have it figured out.  I'll keep you posted - so might he.

Target 550 had a problem.
444 Vesco wagon ran well.
A couple of safe spins, a few breaks, but a nice day with no wind.

I'm first off after return runs tomorrow.
ROUGH hard course.

We just got off the salt, sun is setting and we're pooped, here is the Pepperoni version of events. On Saturdays, Carquest doesn't open until 8:30am, the drivers meeting was scheduled for 8 so we were on the salt at sunrise. Drivers meeting turned out to be at 9 and by the time we were done with course inspection it was around 10:30, we checked in with Ron at the radio trailer and got his recommendation for the type of connector we would need and headed for Carquest. Nobody had informed Mayor Mike that a package was coming and the local PO doesn't deliver packages so he had to close the store (leaving us in charge) and drove off in one of his Corvettes to fetch it. Laptop in hand, we scoured Wendover for what Steve called a "party" connector, one male RCA jack with two female RCA outlets, there were none to be found until the hardware store, which opened at noon, coughed one up. We headed back to the radio trailer to hook things up, unfortunately when I called Slim for the password, I didn't write it down, this complicated things later. As it turned out we needed one more cable so I drove back to the Pilot in Wendover to pick one up. When we finally had everything hooked up properly, the whole thing needed to be rebooted and not having the passwords proved to be a problem, it took a long time to get ahold of Slim, by the time this mess all got sorted out it was close to three. So I apologize for the delay, I really treasure being able to follow along when I can't be there, but there were a lot of obstacles in the way, hopefully tomorrow will go a lot smoother.

We just got off the salt blown by the wind. First the Turbinator, it left the line loud and proud with no push truck! Blew a tyre, lost a 'chute, and messed up the bodywork some, possibly going 393 when it happened.
Steve is computer savvy and has been trying to access the laptops audio controls from the beginning, so far, we have not been successful, but we are racing and have been distracted.
This is a small meet, like the old days, you can lap the track if you care to, what fun! Less fun for the faster vehicles, just not enough good salt. Short course was awesome but short, closed down now so that Mike Cook can get to work on preparing a race course for the fast folks waiting in the wings, the Triumph streamliner is parked at the Montego Bay with the door open if you'd care to drop by and have a look.
Tomorrow is the last day and it will probably wrap up pretty quick, things are really dwindling, we will keep the streaming on for the record return runs and any other pertinent action going on and then pack it in.
Slim, where should we leave your equipment? With Mike?

Turbinator was on course when a side wind tore up the pits.
Radio report was a nail and some trash took out the right front.
Back in the pits, there was a bunch of bodywork missing there.

Real quick - leaving the house but got an email from Ron Christensen - on the salt now.

First of all, a big rainstorm on the salt last night.  Still too dark to see what's happened.

The Turbinator lost a front drive shaft which took out a tire, and the rest -- well, I'll see if I can post the shots Ron sent.  Dave Spangler said he thought he was doing around 420 when everything went to hell.
Title: Re: World of Speed 2016
Post by: Seldom Seen Slim on September 13, 2016, 10:09:25 AM
Looking at the coupla photos that Ron sent - makes me pretty sure there ain't gonna be no racin' out on the salt today.  Wet pits, wet course.

It was early when he took the shots - the light isn't all that good in 'em.  And they're only candid photos, not the entire picture.  I took a look just now at the USFRA and Shootout sites/FB pages.  USFRA mentioned the storm - but the post was hours old.  Nothing from Cook.

Sorry I can't easily post those photos but will try soon.  And please keep in mind that you'll get the news on the event(s) by checking their sites and pages, not necessarily here.

Nothin' new from anyone out there?  I know the event has ended, but geez -- I'd like some feedback on the salt condition - so we can get busy second-guessing Mike Cook on whether there's gonna be a Shootout, whether it'll start on time, and so on.

Let the posts commence to begin getting ready to start moving to the mark so we can get prepared to get - cornfused.

Here's the shaft that broke the shaft the holed the tire.
They haven't downloaded all the telemetry yet, but, "yeah, around 420."

He was fueling the truck at the Salt Flats Cafe so I had to ask...

Salt was dry, hard, and "violent" on the long course.
130 club track was smoooooooth.

According to Nat Weather Service radar (storm total) rainfall the race course area got between a trace and .3 inch last night and 22 miles east they got soaked with 2.5 inches of precip.

8 hours ago Mike Cook posted the following on his facebook page.
Mike Cook's Land Speed Shootout
8 hrs ยท

Last night's rain was minimal. No standing water. Wind is blowing. We will commerce grading the track tonight. Shootout is not canceled.

Will have to wait for more definitive word later I suspect, at this time, current radar shows some precip possible, but at this time just a trace well south of the racing venue.

Great week! We spent most of our time on the short course where you could make laps as fast as you can get ready. No line at all. Thanks a bunch to the USFRA folks and the additional help from the SCTA gang!

Pretty sure we set the record for the quickest time from qualifying to record run - qualified at about 4:30 on the short course, drove to impound, called Dan, he was right there (we were in impound for about 7 minutes, literally) then he drove us back to the short course for our record run as weather was predicted for the morning. Finished our run and were back in Warnerville being inspected by about 5:30. :)

Set two records with the little sidecar scooter at 38 and 43mph. One for my dad at 81 years old and one for his wife at 72 years old. Not fast but they have the records!

Wed 09/14/16-0515 MDT and radar is showing green in the area of the course.  Weatherunderground sez a 15% chance of rain in Wendover until about 1700MDT.

I'm figuring on heading out on the 5-hour trip from Boise, anyway!

I'm back at my boring "Day Job" after an absolutely fantastic time at WOS.

We completed a total of 7 runs with 3 drivers in the #672 H/DT entry.

Unfortunately, on the last run, the engine let go with my friend (A rookie driver) at the wheel.

One pic pretty much tells the story....

Sorry to my other competitors about the oil on the track and the delay as we towed the broken Rampage off the course.

WE WILL BE BACK NEXT YEAR!

Steve.

I need to congratulate Brady Nish. After 10 years of driving the Volk Brothers Roadster finally set the B/GR record at 236 MPH during WoS. He is a good kid and drove it hard.

Does anyone happen to know these two jokers?

The one with the camera tried to distract me while the guy in the leathers picked my pocket.     :-D

Author of this was PorkPie.

Well, I'm here at Jim"s (Texican) house.

Mother nature was not so friendly to get us a full season....but we had a great time...may be the greatest moment to see two long time friends getting their D license...Doc Freud and Texican Jim,

Doc on the bike and Jim in the USFRA Club roadster....the smile was wider than the helmet....

PorkPie,

I wish I would have stayed to see those smiles. Congratulations to both Glenn and Jim.

I didn't put it together when Jim was talking about going down the course in the Club roadster, but holy cow, what great fun.  Glad you got to make passes, Jim.  Your firesuit or didja wear Bo Burkdoll's?

They're both actually quite harmless, provided you're penniless, and you haven't rented the guy in the leathers a car.

Although I still think the guy on the left is actually a Texas oil tycoon feigning a foreign accent in order to fly below the radar with the IRS.

Mike, When you get ready to debut your car on the Haaksteen Pan [Sp.] I'll come over and I'll bet we can get Pork Pie to be the official event photographer. We can drink beer and he will be our designated driver. Heck of a team.

Thanks Doug, that would be great but we need "Pop" there too.

These announcements regarding parenthood are coming way to late.

I don't have enough income to have to submit an income tax form.

I could have used your confession a few years ago when another

deduction would have been beneficial.

Jon: Sorry to be late replying.
As you know, I was otherwise occupied through this time slot.
Fan club from 2014 turned up and insisted on pictures
Gave the old fnork a bit of levity.  :-D :?

Richard had quite an assortment; we tried several.
Actually found some size 15 or so boots; thank goodness for duct tape to take up some slack to prevent snagging on the bailout.
Bo inspected, ok'd the bailout; and followed the progress down the course; was there to assist the dismantling of paraphernalia.

Great bucket list item, from 1949.

Jim, I think Gus and I was on the return road waiting for Freud when you pulled up in the club roadster after a run.
Made my day, there were a lot of good things happening.
