Title: Wilmington June Picture Post
Post by: gkabbt on June 15, 2016, 02:36:38 PM

This is the usual place holder for pics from Wilmington this weekend.

I'll be driving up to Wilmington tomorrow, taking pics Friday, Saturday and Sunday and will post the links in this thread.

Also, anyone who has pics, please feel free to post here!
To ALL racers: Be Safe, Go Fast and Have Fun!

Day started off a cloudy and with very low humidity made it seem really cool. Around noon the sun was out and the day turned out gorgeous!

When I checked in here at the Wilmington Inn yesterday, the owner/manager told me that he has not really heard any major news about the Amazon deal at the airpark so maybe we will be here for a while longer.....fingers crossed!
Today, I asked Brian about the status of the September meet and he told me that air park authority would let him know around the end of July.
So, there MAY be a September meet after all.....fingers crossed here as well!

I was told there are around 120 entries so the racing folks should get in MANY laps!

Enough babbling from me so here is my Google Photos link from today in the pits and in inspection line:

As usual, I hope you enjoy,

Late this afternoon I was over at the bike inspection for some pics and was EXTERMELY GLAD to see this "young" gentleman.....Our very own Fred Vance!

As many of you know, he had a stroke back in March and is here at this meet. He is looking good and was told is doing very well but has a minor speech issue that is getting better day by day. He does have a bike at this meet that Brenda Sue will be piloting!

REALLY GOOD seeing him here!!!!!

Gregg, that Lincoln is the Bee's knees!

Bungee cord hood tie down - just like the Kiekhaefer Chrysler 300.  THAT car's got more than just a vibe going on - it's screamin' real deal!

Enjoy the weekend, Chief!

When I was a kid, my across the street neighbors had a '54 Lincoln Capri like that and I just absolutely LOVED that car!
This one REALLY brought back those memories!

Weekend is shaping up to be fantastic.....Wish You and Mrs. Midget were here!

One car I enjoyed seeing today was Mike Brown's Belly Tank Lakester. He had it here only on a trailer for preliminary inspection and I got several pics of it.

Here is the 1st pic on the trailer:

VERY well thought out and constructed car and here is the link to his build diary:

It must be so NICE to race your car or bike and not have to spend the next week cleaning salt off your vehicles! Then find all kinds of rust and corrosion a year later anyway.

Another absolutely GORGEOUS day here in Wilmington. Temps started in the low 70's this morning and got up to the mid 80's by the late afternoon. Seems like we always have a tailwind on inspection day and then cross winds on race day. Today was no exception. Lite winds in the AM and moderate winds in the PM.
Still EXCELLENT racing all day with (IIRC) the fastest bike at 226 and the fastest car at 223.
Weather for tomorrow is supposed to be about the same so we should have more EXCELLENT racing!

Here is my Google Photos link for todays pics:

As I've posted before, one of my most favorite group of folks here are the guys and gals from the Gary's Speed Shop team. Over last winter, they teamed up with a new engine builder, Nick Ramey/RoushYates and went from just over 200 to the mid 220's with their NASCAR car.....VERY impressive!

Rich, I was telling the owner of the Lincoln about your post and he was curious about the fuel injection.
Is it Hilborn? He said they only made 7 of them.

The next car after the tractor ran 101+ was a Karman Ghia that ran 94+.
I ran upstairs in the timing trailer and told Brian how embarrassing could that be.....Getting outrun by a tractor!!!!!  :-D

FIRST THIS NEWS UPDATE:
I forgot to post yesterday, but the ECTA folks were told by the Air Park yesterday that the September meet is a GO!

Now with today's news:  :-D
Another GORGEOUS day for racing here in Wilmington. Temps started in the low 70's and got to the upper 80's but we did have a breeze.....the as always, Wilmington headwind at around 8 - 10 mph.

When I got to the track this morning, I rode through the pits and it seemed that about 1/2 the trailers were gone.
As I rode over and through the staging lanes that indeed was the case. I kinda felt that we would be ending earlier than 4:00 PM. Keith made the decision that we would run till we did run out of competitors and that occurred around 3:15 PM and the meet was called.

Stats for this meet are:

604 total runs

Fastest motorcycle: Dan Oaks at 237+
(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/15vEKbyLA84hOjFAjp_q2JD2RuTErYNT_vQvsFs-3OH7iGlmwhdoG-AubHmfs1X9DaKVuX6RqAOEeg=w920-h690-no)

Fastest car: C. Douglas Johnson at 223+

All-in-all a GREAT meet and many thanks to the ECTA volunteers!

799 D/FCC William (Jack) Bateman Bateman Racing 1948 Fiat 194.3845,  179.6407,  195.2278,  196.0784

They have been coming to Wilmington for the past several meets and have had transmission issues and never made a full pass.
Well this weekend those issues were resolved and he was dancing right at 200 with several upper 190 runs.
WELL DONE JACK AND TEAM!!!!!

Another KUDOS goes out to the Jack Iliff''s 3522 G/GALT Nissan 240SX team.

3522 G/GALT Jack Iliff ICE Racing 1990 Nissan 240SX 158.2278,  159.5179,  157.7840,  160.1423

And as he told me, with the 160.1423, he is just a few tenths shy of a mph for any N/A 2.0 liter class record here at Wilmington!

Way to go Jack and Team!

Thanks Gregg! Best I can tell, fastest NA 2 liter in any class excepting lakester (160.2) and streamliner (168). I picked up 6mph over my old engine combo which ran pretty well also. The 160 pass was right at the end Saturday evening. Sunday morning with the head wind we felt the only way to possibly go faster was to put smaller tires on the back which in the past has shown quicker acceleration, allowing longer time in 5th to get up to final speed. But that would have put me going through the lights at better than 10000rpms and as I hope to go to Bonneville (fingers crossed for that meet) we decided not to push our luck. First meet in a long time I haven't broken something.

No, same as May ( I was referring to the prior head- 2 valve SBC-SB2.2) However, I added a spacer to the intake ram horns which on the dyno moved the power curve down 500 rpms with same peak power as the shorter ones. It also brought the power in a bit sooner so there was more in the 8-9000 range but did drop off higher. However, it still revved  well (peak rpm was 10245 on one shift)
