Well, like the title says, Max is building a 3000cc APS-VF bike...
The streamliner is in a museum in Augusta Kansas, without the motors.
The motors are going in the new bike
Yep, he has been at it for several months after a bit of planning....
-
Way too many gauges to look at.... some are just for pit tuning
-
Rob, is that liner still in the Augusta museum? If so, I may have to wander by and take a look.
John
-
Ross, Turk, Max and I are headed there Saturday at 11... I think that is their grand opening.... you are welcome to join us...
maybe we can get Max to buy lunch
-
See you there. BTW, is this museum on 54/400 hwy?
-
Augusta on 54, right on Lulu I think get you to parking according to Max. Address 601 W 7th... 7th is 54.
See you there... I guess grand opening is April Fools day.... we will be a day late...
-
All of this just proves "You cannot keep a good man down!" I know it will be fast and innovative. Keep us up to date on this build Stainless.

Some sort of GPS like that with a memory is used for bootleg LSR around here.
-
Awesome build.
Thanks and best of luck.

Thankyou,, certinally is in my neighbourhood as we have a Jaycar store in town,
All the best with the build Max, 8-)
-
Max, wish I had your energy. I'm still working on English Thunder, may get it finished this year.
John
-
Max is making some progress... scrapped the idea of using Busa fairing stuff... he is building it from aluminum... in fact he is building a lot of it from aluminum. Here's a couple of pics of where is is now... more to follow as time goes on.
Max looking toward the 17 season to run this one
-
OK kids, it has been a while, that does not mean Max has not been working... it means I've been busy, and may not have posted all the pics I've taken. In my own defense, this is not my only function... it's not easy being an
"old retired guy living on a fixed income"...
Max is continuing, getting close to start building the fairing...
-
This fairing is going to kick so much butt!!! I can't waiting to see the final shape. Quite a few years ago, I drew up a similar idea. If I could have found the vintage Triumph engines I wanted to use, I may have started down that path as well...

Robin
For those that do not follow Max on the Face Page, this will be a Partial Streamlined bike. As per the SCTA rulebook, the body work will have cutouts for the rider to be seen. So, take the scooter that Robin UK posted, and make a rider silhouette cutout in the body.
-
As my granddaughter would say - coolio.
Robin
-
More picks on the way, Stainless been a visiten a doing hisen thingy. :-D
-
Well Max had the hammer and nails out when I got there... he may be taking up woodworking.... or opening a honky tonk... about a 1/4 inch of sawdust on the floor
Bike fairing concept is starting to take shape...
-
At least wood won't rust on the salt. :-D :-D

true craftsman...

Looking Good! Is that a buck for aluminum, or are you using urethane or polystyrene foam for a fiberglass plug?
It reminds me of our High mileage bike shell we made in the 70's

Test run at El Mirage
We did have some bulges for the steering that you may not need.

This shows the NACA Duct that we used for cooling air. The air was run into a shroud that was formed over the motor, it worked pretty well, don't know if you could do it with those motors, very complicated forms for sure. This photo shows the connection to the shroud, not very clear maybe, hope this helps in your work!

Best luck,

I remember that bike in front of the grandstand at Daytona.
Everything was exposed.
FREUD
-
Hi Freud,
Now that is a picture I won't put up! :-D
Matt Guzzetta
-
The BUCK will be used to form a ALUMINUM BODY, cheers.
-
Matt, the picture is ready to be framed.
FREUD
-
Well speaking of framing... Max the carpenter has been hard at work making sawdust...
and now he is ready to take the buck off of the bike so he can get to work on both. So Ross Powers (MC2032 here and record holder at Bonneville) joined me to get it pulled apart.
-
So we pulled out all the bolts and a few nails that strayed across the dividing line between the pieces.... under the strict supervision of you know who
-
And then we put the pieces back together for Max...
So we put the pressure back on Max to break out the wooden mallets, leather bag, planishing hammer and english wheel and get building.
Word on the street is Max has replaced the plastic sawhorses with a build stand, guess I will have to go by and check progress one of these days
-
The BUCK will be used to form a ALUMINUM BODY, cheers.
Max, what would it take to teach me basics of working aluminum? I am in your back yard so driving distance is not a problem.
John
-
John, you guys could learn together.... this is part of Max's continuing adult education.... he wants to learn to beat up aluminum... so he is going to build an aluminum fairing.
Learning to do things that he has not done before is right in Max's wheelhouse... (he is retired Navy... when you are on a ship and need something, you figure out how to make it)
-
I need to call Max and set something up. At the least, he may need another pair of hands on that English Wheel.
John
-
Took a two day tin knocking class a few years ago and it was a lot of fun! http://www.ddclassic.com/
The Yoder came off a WWII aircraft carrrier. It will shake your teeth out if you fight it! :-o :-D
Learned about shrinking & stretching but mainly about persuading metal to do what you want!
Me thinks there is a big metal shaping fair in Illinois every year where you can get some hands on but the name of it escapes me! Anyone know about it?
Don't know this guy but like his web page name: http://www.saltflatsspeedshop.com/metalshaping-classes

John
Yep, no use in Max being the only guy with smashed fingers :-D
-
Also spelled with an "l" as in slashed fingers! :-o :-D
Paper cuts times ten!

He is a good metal shaper.
-
The one in Oblong Il is metalmeet.com
There is another site Allmetalshaping.com
Either site has a lot of info and help if you ask. The info to do about anything you want to do to any metal is there.
I have been to the Oblong meet but it's been several years ago.

For those that think Max is slacking, I have to admit, I took pictures a week ago and did not get them on here. Here are a few more pictures of the buck development.
And as promised he built a stand to work on because the sawhorses were a little wobbly
-
Put today's picks on mate, I keep doubling your pay SHEEESSSSS, go figure :?
-
Here are a couple more from last week... I have some I took today and I will put them up as soon as I have time to resize them. Max is a regular slave driver.... :-D
He is finished I think... it is still Friday so I'll say he passed the buck. Today's pics to follow
Merry Christmas everyone
-
Looking great! The buck itself is a work of art.
-
Max,
What is the material that you are using for your buck? Looks like some sort of laminated board. I have to build a buck for the back of me lakester in the near future and I really like the looks of yours, and I am not ashamed to steal a great idea.
Rex
-
Wow!!! Stainless's pay is about equal to the pay most of us have had working in and about this sport, love, lust, disease or whatever it's diagnosed as
Merry Christmas everyone and a Happy New Year.
Ron
-
JUST PINE WITH OUT KNOTS, PRETTY EXPENSIVE, A BAND SAW AND A NAIL GUN AND A LOT OF TIME. you will wind up with a garage full of sawdust and a boat load of WASTE. cheers.
-
-
Actually Max has doubled my pay so many times I can hardly keep track... except for the time when we fried the motor... he cut my pay in half to help with the expenses :|
So here are a few more pics of the buck...it is upside down with closeups of the formed parts.
-
Then we flipped it over... Max claims it is finished... so I will box up the chain saw for him.
A few more to follow
-
Last 3... let the metal smashing begin
-
Is that the face of a Roswell alien in the knot on pic 066? LOL
Is the plan to have this bike on the salt in 2017? My father in law keeps asking (I promised him a trip 2 years ago LOL)
-
Is that the face of a Roswell alien in the knot on pic 066? LOL
Shhhhh.... Max is getting help where he can... :-D
Metal is being pounded and formed
-
Looks like it's almost done.
WOW !!
That didn't take long.
That's what happens when
Stainless arrives on the scene.
FREUD
-
Well folks it appears Max has been working on the bike a little lately. I was in his neighborhood and dropped by for a chat. He has the bottom roughly constructed and ready to weld parts together, but he will finish the top before he welds.
-
He said he was about to call me anyway because he needed help turning the fairing over so he could work on the top next. So we flipped it over... OK Max... back to work.
-
Looks like Max has been working on the bike... stopped by to check on him and WOW! Max stitched 44 pieces of aluminium together and now he has a little clean up, then cut it apart and mount it to the new bike. Here's some pics of the progress
-
and a couple more... starting to look like a fairing
-
Then he mentioned he had a windscreen that will be cut and mounted.... I guess you get the idea
-
update on Max's project. max with the rear half of the bike and hand hammered tail fairing.
And whats under it.
-
the three pieces that make up the tail section. the unit frame, the seat and the fuel tank. note the frame has three integral tanks built into it. a picture of the on board compressor and a sneek peek at the front half of the bike in the background.
-
and a gratuitous picture of yours truly trying to show riding position. please take turns dog piling on me. and no, the kitchen step stool is not sfi rated. max has put more time and effort into this build than I can adequately relate in these posts.
-
Took a little time off from my build to check on Max... ya know Max is not happy with looks good... lot of thought and effort in this bike.
Some current pics
-
And a few more...
With any luck Max will chime in and tell ya more about his new scooter...
-
Here is an interesting idea for foot pegs....
