Just received these photos of the next stages of the DSS36 36hp engine being crafted for the Type 64 36hp Challenge racer by Whitey Worsham of North Carolina. Simply amazing the new technology being applied to these ancient engines. Photos by Bruce Cook.

Enjoy

The Type 64 crew from North Carolina has shared many body images and now the the highly modified 36hp engine being prepared by Whitey Worsham of German Automotive together with Bruce Cook is nearing completion. The photos below share some of the technology Whitey has engineered into the mighty 36er including a solution to the problem of lifter angle when using Porsche 356 lifters and finding 85.5mm pistons. Enjoy............

Post by: 36hplandspeedracer on September 28, 2016, 02:59:31 PM
FLASH ! ! ! !

The Type 64 recreation body is complete and rolling on the late Beetle chassis. A private open house was held this past weekend to introduce the masterpiece of craftsmanship to the world. Now, it is time for the DSS36 engine and IRS trans-axle installation, roll cage and safety equipment fitment and final assembly and testing, which is anticipated to be complete sometime this Spring. Below are a few pics from the final body assembly and roll-out.

Progress reports will be posted as they are made available. Gonna be fun.......

Getting close. Dave Miller at Copacetic has completed crafting the T64 body and doors, the ECTA approved roll cage has been integrated into the body and Whitey Worsham, German Automotive has completed the ultra special 1699cc 36hp based engine (Dyno results will be published soon). This special rolling creation is now in the hands of Bruce Cook who will fit the wiring and race electronics, the transaxle and Whitey Worsham engine. From there, Elbert Efird will finish off the interior and the car will be ready for it's first test runs. Keep watching and we will let you know when it will first run in anger. Stay tuned.........................................

Dave Miller, Copacetic Metal Shaping, is the owner/creator of the body on the amazing T64 tribute racer. Below are recent pics showing the blending of the roll cage into the Berlin-Roma clone. This is not SCTA legal but designed to pass ECTA regulations for the class and speeds the car is expected to reach (est. 150-160 mph). Here are Daves own words and photos.................................Pay particular attention to how the cage is enveloped by the inner bodywork to retain the original Berlin-Roma coupes persona while still adding this critical safety component.

In January, Eric Yost (Customs by Bigun) designed, built and installed a beautiful six point cage in the Typ 64.
The car returned to Copacetic Metal Shaping for the final assembly of the body, and finishing touches.

"After nearly five years, the body is finished, and now on loan to Bruce Cook.

Bruce came by on March 16th, and with the help of a few friends, we lifted the body off of my street chassis, and set it on Bruce’s land speed chassis. With some minor adjustment, we were able to bolt the body and chassis together. The body is so light, that half a dozen guys were able to complete the task without damage to the car, or the participants. Bruce and the team are now preparing the car for land speed competition.

We do not know when or where yet, but stay tuned."

Post by: 36hplandspeedracer on April 21, 2017, 12:46:17 AM
Jeff Huber of the Gear Garage has completed the transaxle for the T64 and all the components are now coming together in preparation for the first test. When Bruce Cook reinstalls the Dave Miller/Copacetic body back on the race prepped chassis, it will be for the final time. Stay tuned, getting close............

What a beautiful example of body work. I am very impressed with the attention to detail in building it. It's difficult to appreciate the time spent forming this unless you have tried it yourself.  Looks like only the best parts being used! Good luck with your build.

Finished ! ! ! ! After a six year gestation period, the Volkswagen T64 Berlin to Roma collaboration of Dave Miller, Bruce Cook and Whitey Worsham is complete. And if you wish to see it race, schedule April 14th and 15th, 2018, to be in Blytheville, Arkansas, for the initial ECTA event for 2018 ( http://ecta-lsr.com/ ). The fantastic Type 64 Project is amazing in so many details, not just the fact that it even exists. The under car aero can be seen in these photos shared by Bruce and were designed by a team member from the NASCAR world. The aero is designed to help hold the car to the ground at the expected 150 plus mile per hour speeds provided by the DSS 36hp based engine without external wings or spoilers. And note the two large deck lid bumps allowing adequate carburetor clearance. Gonna be fun to see this race.................

I'd love to see that race, don't know if it will happen. What did the 36hp engine dyno at, if you can say? The whole project LOOKS incredible! Best of luck to all involved.

The Type 64 tribute car is finished and race ready.

The results of the Team Versuchwagen Type 64's A2 Wind Tunnel test were spectacular and verified the aero efficiencies of Kommendas original sketches. And some surprises as well. In the tunnel, the vehicles tires are placed on top of sensitive computer connected electronic scales mounted under the floor which record variations in pressure as air flows over, under and around the body at various wind speeds. The biggest surprise (lesson?) came when improvement was found by removing the Copacetic Metal Shaping fabricated full belly pan along with the rear fender skirts/spats. This combination provided the most stable pressures at higher air flow speeds. It was determined the rear skirts/spats added 50 pounds of lift to the rear! It was also determined that installing a 4 3/4 inch  tall perfectly vertical spoiler at the rear deck lid area would actually reduce lift, add stability "and reduce drag" making higher speeds possible without increasing horsepower. There is no front splitter, air dam or spoiler. The wind tunnel engineer running the tests indicated he had never seen such a early example of aerodynamics prove so successful. Kudos to Erwin Kommendas foresight and natural aero expertise.

This car will be raced just once in the Type 64 configuration, in April at the ECTA speed trials in Blytheville, Arkansas, http://ecta-lsr.com/. After that, Dave will remove the T64 tribute body where it will then be installed on a second VW chassis/floorpan designed strictly for street driving at which point you can expect to see Dave enjoying the car at east coast Volkswagen and Porsche events. Bruce Cooks race based VW Beetle floorpan will then have a stock Volkswagen Type 1 sedan body installed and then delivered to the A2 Wind Tunnel to give us the first actual wind tunnel test of a Beetle air cooled sedan. After the VW Beetle wind tunnel test, the Bug will return to Arkansas for a attempt to capture the 36hp Challenge DSS (vintage dual carb) Bug record.

It can either be pretty or go fast. What year stock body will you use, a split? It would be interesting to see just how aero a split is.

Press Release

Team Versuchen
Type 64 Tribute Vehicle
March 5, 2018

For immediate release:

Deja Vu

It has happened again. In 1939 Dr. Porsche created the KDF Typ 64 competition car to race in the Berlin to Rome high speed endurance race. World War 2 happened and the Typ 64 never turned a wheel in anger, leaving Dr. Porsches dream unfulfilled. Deja vu, and now the new handcrafted Typ 64 tribute car created to race for top speed records has met a similar fate.

Much to our regret, Team Versuchen, the group preparing to race the recently completed Type 64 KDF/VW/Porsche tribute car, has no option but to announce that planned competition with the car in April at the E.C.T.A. land speed event in Blytheville, Arkansas, will not take place. Due to legal complications, Team Versuchen has severed all ties with Copacetic Metal Shaping and Dave Miller.

It saddens us to advise all Team Versuchen followers, especially after all the effort and investment over the past six years, that it will not be possible to utilize the Type 64 tribute body or the unique custom components designed specifically for this special vehicle in a competitive environment.

All of your interest and support has been greatly appreciated.

Sincerely

Team Versuchen
Bruce Cook
