I'm just curious whether it's streetable? Are rear-wheel-only brakes street-legal?

Jack, do all t-buckets have front brakes? I never paid any attention

There'd be a few problems that might take more concern than just not having front brakes.  Registration, one of them.  Maybe depends what year the fiberglass was laid up.

Still a nice car at a can't-build-it-for-that price.

(I thought they quit making "T-buckets" in 1925.  The '26-'27 has a more integrated body.)

And you oughta know, Mr. Back, seeing as how the '26s were coming out about the time you were in high school, right?

Jack,

It was a purpose built race car with no VIN #. It would take a great deal of time and money to make it "streetable", but anything is possible with $$$$$$$'s.

Thanks Tom. I was merely trying to educate myself as to how far away a "street roadster" would be from "streetable". Beautiful car!

Hello Jack,

I was going over in mind what would have to be changed or modified to make it street legal. "Legal" would depend on State DMV regulations. Starting at the front:

Working headlights with wiring and maybe turn signals
Street tires and rims
Front Brakes (maybe not required but necessary) and brake lines. Speaking of brakes, car has a hand brake with small racing master cylinder.
Fully functional radiator and electric fan requiring moving a lot of stuff.
Full exhaust system, not a big problem.
Ground clearance with the oil pan could be an issue.
Tonneau cover would require extensive modification to ease entry and exit if full roll cage not removed, or a working door added and a windshield and wiper.
Car has a homemade dropdown steering box made with double roller chain and gears to slow down the steering ration, fine at 170 but not good in a parking lot. Also no provision for external lubrication.
Has a homemade 2 lever trans shifter with lockout for first gear, and no reverse linkage.
Did I mention only one seat?
Remove 200#'s of lead behind driver's seat.
Rearview mirror.
A couple more gages and a functional horn.
A different seat? OK for a while with SFI 20 firesuit.
Rear street tires.
Working brake lights.
I'm sure I have overlooked some things, but you get the idea.

Oh, and the real BIGGIE, a license plate.

Not to say it can't be done. Bill Brutsman a fellow San Diego Roadster Club member drove a '27 Roadster in Kansas. He would race it @ Bonneville one year after towing it out, and the next year drive it out and perform Patrol Duty.

Being competitive on the Salt and comfortable on the street do not go well together.

Thanks for showing an interest. It reminds me of the joys of building and continuous changing things on the 836.

Thanks for all the thoughts Tom. To continue my enlightenment: any idea what year the SCTA first had a street roadster class? I'd like to look back through old reports and see if, early on, any drivers were competitive in the class with the roadsters they drove to the events.

Jack,

I'm not sure. In the early days you could drive in your roadster, take off your windshield and be ready to race.

A PM to "Stan Back" might be enlightening, or maybe someone like Dan Warner or Glen Barrett.

Reading about the early days of lakes racing, pre and post war, it looks like most drove out to race their ride.  One thing I found interesting was coupes were not allowed until later....
There were a lot of associations racing multiple lakes...
The hot rod scene... still alive and well...

Tom

Very much like what road racers did back in the 1950's. Drive your racer to the track, pull the windshield (if you had a convertible), tape the headlights and go racing. The hot tuners actually carried warmer spark plugs for race day (lol). My goodness, how things have changed.

I did drive my roadster to El Mirage a couple of time years ago.  Never ran it, though.

In 1972, my first year at SpeedWeek, I accompanied my friend Phil Stevenson as he drove his 55 Chevy wagon from Rialto, Calif., to Bonneville.  He was a Cadillac fan and it had a 390 in it with a 6-pot manifold.  He bought the manifold for $15 after convincing the owner it wasn't for a Chrysler.  I had a trash can with 14-15 97s in it that I gave him.  He salvaged 4 of them and blocked off the center two.  It had a Jet-Away Hydramatic (not exactly quick) and we had an uneventful trip.  When we arrived there, we put on 18-inch Halibrands (with 3 lug patterns in them) -- one tire was an Indy tire, the other was a Bonneville tire.  One was 3/4-inch taller than the other.  Both had plies showing thru and were stamped "Good for 150 MPH".

He wanted to go 150 -- and ran 149 a couple times as I remember.  He won what then was a yearly award for going the fastest with a car driven to SpeedWeek.  Don't remember the name of the award, but it later disappeard, i guess.  I'm told that it was because some were claiming it after driving from the Stateline parking lot.  It figures.

I ended up with the 18s which I put on my sedan 25 or so years ago.

Now that you mention Jerry Jones, I remember that Phil and I were charged with removing the blower from the roadster.  I didn't know Jerry, I guess Phil did.  Neither of us knew anything about blowers.

I spent my honeymoon at speedweek 1972 trying to make by belly tank run. Still have the same wife and belly tank. We slept in the bed of my GMC Sprint in the Wendover dump.
