Title: Speedweekend on Ice 2015
Post by: Ellwood on October 01, 2014, 04:16:24 PM
October is usually the month we release the date for the 2015 event.
Probably February, so lets wait anxiously, and see soon.

The regs and race application forms will be released 1 November, for any budding Rednecks wishing to play on the Swedish ice.

I looked into it -- and the airlines want about $1100/each for tickets so Nancy and I could fly to Stockholm for your event.  Add in the extra charges for my leathers/boots/helmet* -- and the price becomes pretty danged high.  Maybe if we win the lottery tonight, though. . .

*  You wouldn't expect me to go all the way there and not ask to make a run or two, would you?

Well Slim, If you make the trip you will see a familiar bike, The "Bonneville Bee", now on it's way to Sweden as I type! Maybe Jonas will let you make a pass. Best of luck to all the Ice Racers, they truly have balls of steel [cold]!

Hi Tom, give us some more info on the Bee please

Tom:  As you know, I'm kinda familiar with the Bee bike, having had Mike Rich twist wrenches for us a time or two.  And I've seen you and it on the salt a bunch of times.  As for, however, me taking a run down the ice on it -- I'll have to think that one out very carefully.  I mean -- any bike which rider gives away spicy pepperoni and pickles and whatever you give out -- may have damaged the air intake tract with fumes other than gasoline - if you know what I mean.  I know the bike has run in a gas class, but I thought that meant - -

Elwood, I think that I should talk to it's new owner before I let his new cat out of the bag! If he says OK, I will be happy to.

OK, it is a '73 Moto Guzzi V7 Sport that has been run on the salt in different 750 pushrod classes for the last 11 years, currently holds 4 records, just cranked out a 156.266 pass at the WOS! I hear that it will be there sometime in January, the new owner has already ordered spiked tires!

Cool Tom. i Guess it might just make the 200 kmh club on ice. (125 mph)

This is the start list so far - one week later.
Pawels Hayabusa turbo is probably the fastest machine, unless Örjans Kawa 1400 can wup it.

Merry freezing Christmas to one and all. Here in Sweden at least the cold is slowly settling over our Speedweekend lake. people are out skating and skiing on it already, and here is the weather forecast in degrees C for the coming days

I'm waiting for the airfare to go down.  I've checked a few times -- and it's above $900 - quite a bit above, dang it.  There's a new cheap airline -- Norwegian Air -- but they fly out of only a few cities, and Chicago isn't one of them.  By the time I get to NY or wherever else they serve -- we're back to $1300 or so.

I'd sure like to visit to give the landracing.com folks my first hand impression, but until the cost is less -- I'll have to stay at home and do with whatever reports you send our way.

But wouldn't it be cool to have live streaming audio from Sweden?>> :-D :-D  :-D

the weather forecast for the next 10 days is not looking good for our race. Now we are hoping for a cold spell the week before the race to save us from a swimming pool. the ice is thick though 50 cm.

Ellwood,

What are the entry fees? I was asked to do the North Cape run from Denmark in 2016 but Speedweekend in Sweden looks a lot more fun and with 480bhp on tap in the Healey should make it interesting.

1300 sek entry for two days racing. there is also a weekend licence which costs around 250 sek. if youre gonna be going over 250 kmh then you need a roll cage, you can use any tyres.

The race is coming and the conditions look perfect this year! :-)

My turbine bike is almost ready, some minor stuff left to do before it can be loaded to the trailer and hauled to Speed Weeend.

Just for the heck of it, John, I've just checked the airfare from Marquette, Michigan.  Trying to get the entire flight on one ticket yields a cost of a bit over $2100.  Wow.  That's more than if I had bought a ticket a few months ago -- lots more.  If I bought one from home to Chicago or New York the total was more like $950 or so - both back in November and now.

So much for selling the last few seats for dirt cheap, hey?  Sorry -- I won't be there this year.  And I was really looking forward to streaming audio from there so the folks in internetland could hear Ander's bike and the sounds of crunching snow and perhaps some wind howling - - and the sounds of Swedes partying.  Skol!  Maybe next time around. . .

What a weekend! Perfect weather (could have been a bit colder since the track got a bit soft at the end of the days) and thousands of spectators made a great race! Plenty of records broken as well, I hope someone at landracing.se will post a summary here when they have had time to get some sleep. :-)

Here is a video of saturdays run with my bike, I haven´t checked the GPS logger yet so I don´t know the top speed. Feels like I ran faster in mid track than at the finish line so perhaps close to 220km/h top speed. The spiked tyres are extremely draggy, we needed two guys just to push the bike to the starting line so on a paved track with summer wheels on it will be very fast!

"This is a story about bike control. Do you think you can manage incidents when you drive? This guy can. During the last weekend in february 2015 Speed Weekend was arranged in Årsunda Sweden. The purpose of the event is to drive fast on ice, similar to Bonneville in USA but on ice and with shorter tracks. 1500 m acceleration, 1000 m speed measurement and about 1500 breaking.

This guy runs a Kawasaki ZZR1400 chip tuned and extended swing arm, might be more mods but no turbo. The tyres are normal class (W) high speed tyres or racing slicks with a high number of go-thru sharpened screws added.

The guy enters the first speed measurement at 281 kph (175 MPH) acceleration continues up to approx 320 kph (200 MPH) when the rear wheel suddenly looses grip and start to spin. This happens approx 200 m before the second and last speed measurement. A fraction of a second later the rear tire explodes and completely leaves the bike.

The situation now is 320 kph (200 MPH) speed on wet ice and no rear tire. Rear end friction is litterly zero. And what is the guy doing? He front brake as hard as he can and unload the rear wheel almost completely. A few seconds later he passes the second speed measurement at 293 kph (182 MPH) more or less on the front wheel. As speed goes down he can release some of the front brake power and eventually stops, still on the wheels. Please note that the speeds are real speeds recorded by electronic timing equipment.
Ohh I almost forgot to tell that this guy is 72 years old, his name is Örjan Jonsson and his nic name even before this incident was grandpa of steel.

This run was the fastest bike run during the entire event, several of his competitors had turbo bikes with for sure twice his horsepower.

Mark Thomas (a Brit) sent a CD full of photos from '11 - '14 -- from SpeedWeekend on Ice.  They're pretty easy to find in the Photos gallery.  Sixth click down from the top.  I see that there's a tad more than 1,200 photos in found albums.  Bob put them up -- that's why I don't know what the heck happened to any from '15 - so don't ask me.  Maybe Mr. Ellwood will let us know where they are.

Anyway -- they're great photos -- go take a look.
